Just noticed he's scored 4 goals in his last 62 games. Great.

Were they in League One?

26 goals and 5 assists last time he was in league 1. I think he will be just fine.

I like this more if we could move BCDR on, we want space to develop younger players.

We need the coaches first that are able to coach players and correct mistakes.  An afternoon with a winner like Albrighton would teach them more than the clowns did last season.  Monga looked like he leant nothing all season other than his raw skill set.  Finally getting rid of the Cooper rot would be a good start.

His numbers arent great for an attacking mid but then I haven't seen what he brought to the team.  I'll ask my Ipswich mate.  Just under 30, not spent all of last season injured and not on stupid wages doesn't make him our usual target.  I'm sure he would be a lot more useful and less annoying than seeing Skipp on the edge of the box and either pass it backwards to stick out the play or miss from 2 yards.

Trust the process my guy. Russel Martin football will unlock a cheat code in him.

Either the right winger or an attacking mid who mainly operates on the right half of the pitch

Chaplin at attacking mid covering the right with Page advancing from centre mid to occupy the left side?

He also had multiple 40ish game seasons in a row, so not an injury prone player.

This.

If Bobby Reid stays, then I really don’t understand why we’d sign Chaplin.

If Reid goes, then it will make more sense.

Looking at a number of their stats from last season, there’s so many similarities.

he’s probably the Ayew replacement,  so many games in league 1 with all the silly cup games, we can’t expect Bobby to play them all…

He’d be better suited in a 8/10 role imo, throughout his career he’s usually played behind a main striker.

Of course that’s the position you expect BDCR to play, there’s too many statistical similarities, where I think it would be strange to keep both.

If BDCR leaves with Chaplin coming in, with maybe Alves or a signing like Tommi O’Reilly as the 8/10 options, I’d be happy with that.

Having a 29 and 33 year old to accommodate probably the same position, not too keen on that idea.

it’s very possible we’d get rid of Bobby. However  with Monga and Fatawu supposedly  leaving it’s possible that Alves would be utilized out wide  more and  with Ayew  often dropping deep, playing as a second forward or a play making forward  I don’t think it’s beyond the realms of bringing this guy in to cover the 10 role AND keep Bobby aswell.

I’m quite intrigued to see how Martin views Alves especially, whether he sees him more as a CAM or WG. Of course BDCR will be in the same boat if he stays. Martin can have a habit of sticking strikers and attacking midfielders on the wing, he did it regularly with Adam Armstrong, he could do similar with Chaplin if he signs or BDCR if he stays.

It’s just the fact that Chaplin and BDCR can do similar things, is it really worth keeping both 😕

One of those players that it's hard to see how you build a team around but he does seem to be dangerous in the right set up.

He's neither a centre forward, winger or midfielder. Suppose he'd be classed as a 2nd striker.

At this level, Ric. I’d expect my Nan to be able to hit double figures.

I just don’t know the extent of our financial flexibility to make all the changes we want  to make .getting this guy in on a free is a total no brainer..  but we can’t force anyone to purchase Bobby, and he won’t just let us release him as he would rightly expect a financial settlement for the remainder of his contract. It might be a case of fitting some of them in and I wonder if aspects like someone’s ability to retain the ball and possession might play a part in how much they play as well. Ideally, Bobby would go, but having him in and around the first 11 would probably be more realistic than him sitting in the reserves running down his contract.

Wasn't it mentioned we are in for Charlie Webster?

I don't hate this tbh. On a free, 49 in 154 isn't too bad, basically one in three - proven at the level. We need more but its not the worst start.

Nugent-esque numbers those.
