Didn't watch it and only watched the 1 minute 42 seconds highlights.

Doesn't sound like it was the best game.

What I do wonder, though, is perhaps Martin is doing one of the following two things:

1. Giving the likes of Souttar, Reid and Mavididi enough rope to hang themselves, i.e. if they can't affect games at this level, why would he continue to put his trust in them when he's signing players who can take their place (hopefully at least one CB comes in).

2. Starting the above players while the transfer window is open to give the impression that they are important to us and therefore more likely to command a fee.

Or perhaps I'm clutching at straws.

One thing I do think is that our starting XIs could still look quite different come September.

It definitely does feel like there's at least some instruction from above to play players to keep their value. Marti alluded to it last season.

Didn't bother with the game today. Is Martin honestly trying to get Okoli to play out from the back 😂 dear me.

Think our fans really really overestimated our youth, and that is not a slight on them. They looked raw which will be worked out of them, and is exactly why people have stuck up for signing the likes of Burns and Cullen. The first month or two is not going to be seamless and I expect we will get stronger as the year goes on, so long as our fans don’t turn. Before anyone says it, I’m fully KP and Rudkin out and think we have been a disgrace for a long time, but thats what turning the corner from such a massive shitshow looks like

In a game where the only good players on the pitch are our youth (Braybrooke, Alves, Joseph, Aluko) our fans somehow manage to blame them for the poor performance.

You just couldn't write itlol

On the other hand the two senior players you mentioned (Cullen and Burn) looked as bad as the rest of them.

Martin has had a better pre season than Enzo. Enzo revolution for effective football is going to hit this forum hard this season!

You appear to have misspelled a couple of words. I have corrected them for you.

No thanks needed.

Is this Dave Challinor who left Stockport and is taking time away from football to spend with family?

The one with seven promotions, yes.

Being realistic, we are a league one club. so our options are limited, but the vast majority of us have had our fill of this style of football.  Martin has failed hard, really hard in his previous jobs, he is a parody of a football manager.  It was so predictable that our geniuses upstairs would go for him.

Very underwhelming.

I get that a win is a win but as a fan you want to be entertained not bored to death.

The one who is taking time away from football to spend with his family, does that sentence not make sense to you? It’s not a realistic appointment as he is taking time away from football.

So have we learnt anything we didn’t know - firstly the ‘we already bloody knews’

Okoli is a bomb scare and horrendous

souttar isn’t a pass it about centre half

Thomas is horrendous

skipp is horrendous

Mavadidi is horrendous

Reid is horrendous

every single one of us already knew all of that

new news

Joseph , braybrooke , alves are decent and more than ready

let’s hope Russel cracks on to the top list asap

if nothing changes nothing changes

if 5 of those 6 are in our starting 11 come September I’ll be fully Martin out - park league football gaffers could see through all of them

however I’m convinced he isn’t stupid no matter what else he is and he will get rid of as many of them as he can

give him a little bit of time

Get an actual striker in and it changes a lot of things with the forward play.

It’s clear as day that Mavididi doesn’t want to be here so why’s he playing?

I think they’ll be a few changes to that team I would presume for Notts county

Our Youtube channel has somehow managed to stretch the highlights to 2 minutes and one second. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Fek me. The best players on the pitch JJ, Braybrooke, Alves and Cullen.

The players making mistakes or were honking were Mavadidi Bobby and Okoli. Souttar made 2 clangers.

JJ for about 75 mins looked very tidy. Alves wasn’t spectacular but we lost quality when he came off. Braybrooke got his first 90mins for us playing a difficult role. They can only get better.

But yeah. Blame the youth. Unreal.

Almost every manager that leaves a club without going straight into a new job does so to “spend time with family”.

It’s football code for “available but don’t try and get me on the cheap”

Bore off.

Give them a chance.

It's not the players it's the style. It's a joke we have tried this for years and look how's it ended.

Martin is one dimensional and as soon as we come up against anyone they will score

The last time we were in this division we had a 40 goal a season strike force in Howard and Fryatt with Paul Dickov to come off the bench. We had Tunchev and Hobbs at the back and Oakley, Tom Cleverley and Mark Davies in the midfield and a mean, hungry and pacy lloyd dyer on the wing. Thats why we blew the league away.

All of those players from 2008 listed were miles above the standard, were leaders in their own way or scored goals for fun at this level

This time around I am glad we have an array of youth coming in to the squad but we still lack leaders in my view and of course we lack anyone who looks like they will break in to double figures. A serious problem to a team wanting to win promotion.

So why is he not in another job? And why leave a club after making it to the playoff final?

Very concerning we could only come up with no more than a couple of decent opportunities against that low block today. However I would argue that a large part of that is down to the triangle of mediocrity of Okoli, Souttar and Skipp we saw today. Braybrooke would be a much better option in the 6, as would Page, and two centre halves who don’t need 5 seconds to sort their feet out before looking up for a pass would make a huge difference to us.

bit late to this thread, but hens teeth we will have the best possession stats in the league this season with the worst XG if we don't get a striker in

Quite a few players he will want starting that didn’t start today. Looked a different threat altogether when Watson and Burns came on.

Thomas and Mavididi is a cursed left hand side, neither of them should be here come the end of the window. As a minimum they’re benched, because overall it was the same old story, players who have been here a while shitting their pants as soon as they got to the KP. After a few of them had a decent pre season.

Was there any info on McFarlane injury? Must have missed that in the pre match.

I’m not blaming the youth in the slightest, I am saying a team that has a lot of young players can’t be expected to be immediately effective and cohesive, which it wasn’t. I am then saying having experienced players come in helps that curve to lessen. We expected 10/10’s from day dot, and it just isn’t realistic with the team we have. I am happy with how the young players played, but they were not cohesive and it was a raw, young performance in a lot of ways. Why would I be blaming anyone anyway, we won and it was all in a pretty decent performance, just imperfect.

Thought I’d give it a couple of hours before posting. Sometimes it good to not be so knee jerk

Positives

Academy lads - I thought they all gave a good account of themselves. Braybrooke and Jospeh stand outs. Building around these lads is the only way we’ll get back to any kind of success

Pressing - When we lost the ball we pressed and either won it back straight away, or forced an error. For the last two years we’ve been far too passive so this was great to see

Negatives

Moved to ball far too slowly - All the good things from pre-season evaporated after 30 seconds. Literally. Too many safety first passes time and time again. I’m all for controlling the game, but there has to be possession with purpose. Not whatever that was

Mavididi - Just get out of this club

All in all kinda what I expected, it’ll take time to get up to speed. Okoli and Skipp just aren’t the right fit for a Martin team, add Thomas to that too. If we’re building from the back you need players who can handle the press, Okoli and Thomas will always turn back and Skipp doesn’t show for the ball. Whoever we play against, whether it be Man City of Bromley that is how those three play football. Cut our loses and get players who fit to the system. Cullen was invisible for 90% of the time, but when he did get involved looked good. Bobby Reid is not a footballer let alone a number 9.

Onwards to Notts County. We’ll get better but I want 4 or 5 of that squad out before the close of the window because it just clouds my judgement and makes me hate this club all over again
