There simply has to be changes to how our defence is set up, or the personnel involved.

We cannot go through a whole season with Luke Thomas included within it.

It's crazy how weak he is defensively. Glaring mistake(s) almost every week.

Martin is lucky he has talent like Page to work with.

It might not be like that every week.

Stockport play a 3-4-3 and Martin had set us up to go with an aggressive high, man to man, press; with Braybrooke taking their middle centre half and Riis / Cullen taking the outside two.

But this dragged Page and Lundstram up the pitch with them and left a huge amounts of space behind them and in front of our back four, making it far too easy for Stockport to clip balls into the front 3 and get us on the turn - and when they were able to do that, they looked very dangerous.

Now, previously, we’ve pressed with a 4-4-2 shape, so this was obviously a decision Martin went for this game in particular to match up with what Stockport do; and I’d argue it didn’t really work for the reasons mentioned above.

But equally, you could say it did because on the flip side we scored four good goals today.

It should also be mentioned, to his credit,  Martin did change things defensively to close the game out, both in shape and the way we pressed and suddenly Stockport were much less of a threat.

We became more compact and from that both Souttar and Thomas looked far more assured - suggesting that the reason didn’t before was more to do with our co-ordinated team defensive effort more than on them individually today.

People moaning about RM and the defence. Souttar should organise that wall. 2 men? Plus an own goal. Players themselves should know better.

I think it's generally agreed in football that keepers organise their wall. And when a limp shot comes in, naturally they should save the shot.

The defence was poor and that's been an issue for Martin throughout his career as a boss. While he's pulled off a good win there and deserves credit, I find it odd that you'd watch that particular game and exempt him from criticism for his ability to set up a defence.

So not all 4 then. ( I assume you’re including Cullen’s- it was a lovely turn and nice strike on his preferred foot, but I don’t remember it as a 20 yarder).
Anyway, very pleased we won ( I don’t care how), and hope the squad can now settle and we start a run of good form).

The truly embarrassing thing is this, Stockport put us under the kosh when we were 4-1 up. Fuching Stockport. We have potential but will never be any good with the intellectual black hole that is Brussel Fartin in charge of our team.

Oh and anyone thinking this will be the start of our revival is an absolute fool. This is just a footnote in the ongoing disaster.

You what?

That’s the Keeper’s job all day - and McCarthy was an idiot to give someone like Norwood an inch by positioning himself more aggressively for a cross.

Did i say all 4? And it was on the edge of the box so around 20 yards.

All I was saying is that I watched the full match and after being 4-1 up, we should habe lost 7-4. Maybe the highlights you watched didnt show that, but for 40 minutes we were absoloutely battered.

Also pleased we won by the way. We're going to need the points if we dont learn to respond in games for such long periods.

Why does this amazing philosophy of his only turn into boot it and sit back after we go in front?

Positives: as we all thought we can put a lot of goals past a lot of teams this season in spite of the tactics. Riis looked great again. we scored 4 at a team I expect to be near the top. This could be one of them turning points as it’s early on and there’s been a lot of turbulence in selections.

negatives: we look awful defensively. Like unbelievably bad. Thomas again targeted with no answers. They should have had more. We have such a weak mentality. If we don’t sort ourselves out at the back we won’t be anywhere near the top.

It was Sunday league organing for that free kick.

Fact is we can't be so bad in defence and expect to do well. That has to change.

Dominant possession is great if you are good enough to do it. Takes a lot skill and movement to do it well, not going to get that at this level.
