Ok, i couldn't watch today's game, and i haven't seen the highlights...however...

 

Whilst its criminal the amount of goals we are conceding, its a big positive that we have scored 4 goals with 3 different scorers.

 

I think defensive issues will be easier to resolve than attacking ones.

 

We look like we have got a goal scorer in Riis and he could prove to be the most important signing.

 

Said it very early on, and il stand by it, Bristric won't be any use. Riis is a massive signing.

 

So yeah, concerning we have conceded 3, but i think its fixable, and its a big positive to have scored 4 with 3 different scorers.

 

Bring on Barnsley.

Still don’t look like a collective unit do we? It’s a hodgepodge of a side mixed with ok players and really shit ones. Nothing really unites this side - you couldn’t say they’re all a good fit for the style or that they’re all good on the ball, for example

I’m pleased with a win, firstly, as I expected us to lose today. But coming out the ground was a strange feeling as it felt like we’d lost.

Stockport play a 3-4-3 and Martin had set us up to go with an aggressive high, man to man, press; with Braybrooke taking their middle centre half and Riis / Cullen taking the outside two.

 

But this dragged Page and Lundstram up the pitch with them and left a huge amounts of space behind them and in front of our back four, making it far too easy for Stockport to clip balls into the front 3 and get us on the turn - and when they were able to do that, they looked very dangerous.

We became more compact and from that both Souttar and Thomas looked far more assured - suggesting that the reason didn’t before was more to do with our co-ordinated team defensive effort more than on them individually today.

This is the issue though, you have identified massive flaws in our system against a 343, and yet RM played it anyway. This has been a running theme with Russell Martin at every single club, even when the opposition play a way that very clearly abuses his systems flaws, he just presses on and his teams concede big numbers in those sorts of games, look at our demolition of them in 23/24. 

The question is why isn't he adjusting the system to the opponent? Is this just a case of him willing to accept these sorts of games to really bed the system in before tweaking it? does he not believe they can adjust the system yet?
To me it just screams playing with fire, and today we almost got burned.

Russell Martin often comes across like me in football manager when I just cba to play properly and just want to flick through a season quickly. You pick a plug and play formation, never bother with any individual opponent tweaks, and just accept that you'll probably lose a few games during the season because you didn't bother to adapt to opponents, but you have the confidence that over the course of the season the system will work more times than it doesn't.

He was Top's brand of manager. The thing is Top doesn't understand lower league football (or football at all). All he sees and wants is Pep ball. He will never grasp the concept. He's not a football person, he sees Man C, Barca, PSG etc and thinks that's what he wants for us. It'll never work at this level.

 

The reason we are where we are is down to his doctrine as well as that inept board that he has accepted as being competent.

 

He (and he's not alone), has brought us down to the point where we lose 4-0 at Oxford and scrape a win today with a pretty much shambolic performance.

 

Anyone with an ounce of knowledge of football managers and their CV would know that RM was entirely the wrong choice. But such is his arrogance, he went with it anyway.

Next week will be as different as chalk to cheese. 

 

It'll go back to possession football again. RM can't stick to the tactics and formation and players that can be positive and front footed.

Obviously I’m glad we won but just feels like 

we’re repeating what happened with Cooper and Cifuentes. 
We’ll continue to concede far too many goals with Martin in charge when realistically any half decent manager would have us at least in the playoff spots by now. 
I just don’t see any consistency under Martin. 
The sooner we have new owners the better.

You can see we were more direct this game. That much is obvious  and the downside of that is giving the ball away more often and giving them more opportunities. So, no, what I’m saying is not “ bollocks”. We have to accept the fact that when you go a bit more diffect, you’re going to give the opponents more opportunity to get back  into the game. Why? Because we are no longer controlling the game.

 

i still maintain though, play like today, sort the defense out and we will be quids in for sure,

We have two clean sheets in a row, then concede 7 in the following two games !!!

But it’s an irrelevant stat. Score more goals and you win. Even if you make one chance and take it but opposition have numerous and don’t. Bit like the possession stats. Look at us when we won the league. Possession wasn’t our big thing but we won games without having more possession. It really does boil down to just scoring more than the opponents.

His non selection of bristic in the squad almost back fired. Needed an outlet when riis came off. How Thomas wasn't subbed also just as bewildering! Ball watches every cross that comes in leaving opponents to get in front or out jump him.

I'm 60 years old with severe sciatica and could still do a better job.

Didn't watch as I was helping my dad move some furniture out of his house in prep for his move. 

 

Will take the 3 points. A win is a win but based on some comments in here, seems like we got lucky in the end.

 

Martin ball is not the long term solution even if he gets us higher up the table. We will get shagged raw dog in the championship (if we were fortunate enough to get there).

 

Still think he needs to go.
