'The Spirit Was Really Good' - Sinclair Reminisces On City Career

 

Eighteen years ago today, on 23 September, 2008, Frank Sinclair, a Leicester City star between 1998 and 2004, played for Lincoln City against us in our first-ever home appearance in the EFL Trophy.
When Frank sat down with Club Historian John Hutchinson, the former defender reminisced about his career in football, playing in the Premier League, European competition, the Championship, Leagues One and Two, the National League, National League North and the Isthmian League. He also won 28 caps for Jamaica.
Tuesday night's match against Fulham U21s was only the second time that our First Team have played a home game in the EFL Trophy competition, now named the Jersey Mike's Trophy. The first occasion was when Nigel Pearson’s Foxes drew 0-0 against Lincoln City, winning the tie 3-1 on penalties. Frank, on the other hand, played for Lincoln that night on Filbert Way.
Reflecting on his career, Frank began: “I was a South London lad, but I went to school in West London, in Pimlico. I was offered trials at Premier League clubs like Wimbledon, Chelsea and Arsenal. I enjoyed it so much at Chelsea that I didn’t even bother going to Arsenal. I went through all the age groups there from the Under-11s to the Under-16s. Then I earned a two-year scholarship before becoming a professional.

I used to live on Aylestone Road with my then GF now wife and she went out on the town with her girlie mates one evening.

 

She got back late and I asked her the next morning if she'd had a good night and she said some footballer was chatting her up at a nightclub and gave her his number.

Yes he scored a few own goals, but probably the best 1 v 1 defender I've seen at City.

Made me chuckle seeing this, I can’t think of who we played, it was an away game, and Frank got sent off and he threw his gloves on the floor off near the kick off spot and was fuming.

The whole away end was singing “Super Frankie Sinclair” as he walked off towards the tunnel

Grimsby away 2002. A game more famous for Muzzy's overhead kick winner.

Very underrated player. Was a steal from Chelsea really. League cup winner in 2000 of course.

Always put his own goals (Middlesbrough aside) down to being brave and getting in there where it hurts.

 

Remember the first two games of around 1999? Tough start away at arsenal and home to Chelsea and he scored the winner  for the arse and equalised for Chelsea both times with the last play of the game. Four points turning to one but for 5 more seconds and Frank! 

 

That said, didn't he score with winner for us against Chelsea with some odd back flick? Obvs whilst he was still a Chelsea player at the time....

Quite surprising he didn't score more given the likes of Elliott and Taggart got a very reasonable share.

 

Really good defender who shouldn't be defined by the own goals.

Franky Sinco was a GREAT defender.

 

He's rightly remembered for his own goals but for some people this has overshadowed just how good he was at defending.
