But our defence last season made an awful lot of very average Championship strikers look good, so it's not much to judge from. He's free though, and if he's from Pompey I doubt he'll be on a big wage.

That role is exactly what Heskey did so well for Liverpool and England. To target with the ball, win it in the air, play with their back to goal, hold it up and wait for support, lay it off, pull defenders away and play others in. They're not there primarily to score goals, that's the second strikers job. They'll chip in with their share but don't expect 20 a season. Target men will never be heroes but a good one is worth his weight in gold to a team. If this happens, it'll be a good signing, a great piece of business and exactly what we need
