Ronaldo gets a lot of his goals through his strength and athleticism, at united he was the best winger in the league and as good in the air as any centre forward, his pace and strength coupled with his skill make him formidable, Messi doesn't have that, he isn't incredibly fast, he isn't particularly strong, nor that good in the air, so all of his goals and assists come from pure footballing ability, that is why he is better than Ronaldo, that and the fact he has scored more goals, got more assists and won more trophies.

When taking into account goals with messi/ronaldo people need to also realise that messi plays with the two best playmakers in the world...iniesta and xavi.

Messi still has to finish them does he not? And Messi has also assisted more for his team mates.

Plus, Dani Alves has more assists for Messi' goals than Xavi or Iniesta.

I hate it when people try and use this, as if Ronaldo's got 10 Junior Lewises playing with him....

I think the proof is in the pudding when you watch Barcelona without Messi, they don't look half as good, espeiclly away from home, sort of dispells the Xavi and Iniesta arguement somewhat. And as it's been said he's not short of talent around him.

Although I do think Ronaldo does deserve plaudits for having performed at two different teams in two different leagues.

Both of them have been a bit of a dissapointment for their country when it's mattered most.

I'd say Messi was probably just better, but I'd much rather watch Ronaldo. More entertaining. I like how he loves himself, too. Messi is such a boring person. There's just something about people like Ronaldo, Ibra, Balotelli etc that makes me want to watch/hear about them more than Messi because you don't know what'll happen next. I can tell you exactly what's going to happen in 99% of Barca games. They'll bore everyone by passing it around, Messi will eventually lose his man, be passed to and chip the keeper. Seen it all before. Ronaldo will give you ridiculous free kicks, stupid amounts of skills, passes with his back, arse, whatever you want. Just something about that that makes him more enjoyable to watch, to me. But if you had to rely on one to win you a tight game you'd probably choose Messi.

Messi, easily!

Since 2009, the stats speak for themselves.

Messi has won:

La Liga: 3 times

Copa Del Ray: 2 times

Spanish Super Cup: 3 times

UEFA Champions League: 2 times

FIFA Club World Cup: 2 times

UEFA Super Cup: 2 times

Ballon d'Or: 4 times

European golden boot: 2 times

Ronaldo:

La Liga: Once

Copa Del Ray: Once

Spanish Super Cup: Once

European Golden Boot: Once

Also, Messi has scored more and has more assists than Ronaldo since Ronaldo signed for Madrid.

End of.

In terms of winning trophies though, I could argue that Le Tissier hasn't won anything major but he is still one of the greatest players to play in the top flight.

Messi won't leave Barcelona. He's a very loyal player and there's no way he'd leave the club that practically gave him a career. He had problems with his growth hormones when he was about 11 and Barcelona decided they'd pay for all of his treatments in return for him joining them. I cannot see Messi leaving for that alone.

I think Messi will eventually drop into central midfield when he's in his thirties, his passing's as good as Xavi/Iniesta for me. I reckon he'll stay at Barcelona until he's about 35 then go and play for a couple of years at someone like Newell's Old Boys, before returning to Barcelona as an ambassador or something.

Messi four Ballon d'Or in a row?

/thread

How could I forget this? I was in the barca museum just one week ago staring at them longingly.

Messi is better.

I feel like he has transformed peoples' perceptions of the game too with regard to the attributes required to be a top pro. The knock on effect has been that down where I play a load of little 16 year old lads with good skills have started turning up thinking they can get involved. It's great because now I get to run around shouldering them all over.

I think it would interesting to see them swap clubs, see what sort of effect that has on both player and clubs fortune.

I enjoy watching both, think messi is better but has mentioned above both have generally been poor for their countries in comparison to club.

In the end though we are lucky to have two exceptional footballers playing at the same time.

Ronaldo is a voyuer. Messi is the greatest.

I see this as very much like the debate between FIFA and Pro Evo a few years ago (when Pro Evo was best). FIFA looked good, had the proper names, shirts and stadiums etc. But Pro Evo was far superior in terms of game play even if less fashionable and glossy.

Those who favoured the glamour of old FIFA over old Pro will plump for Ronaldo. Those who appreciated Pro Evo for what it was and the actual substance of the game experience will go for Messi.

Messi is better.

I've always preferred FIFA and think messi is better. Theory flawed! lol

Don't think Messi would do it on a Tuesday night at Stoke tbh.

Even when a fairly average Valencia side had no problems?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/16959048

Stoke's hopes of advancing in the Europa League were dented as Valencia won the first leg of their last 32 tie thanks to Mehmet Topal's stunning goal.

Asmir Begovic made a fine save to deny Jonas before Topal fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 30 yards.

Peter Crouch came close to levelling it with an acrobatic strike, while Sofiane Feghouli's effort came back off a post.

Stoke pushed for a late equaliser but Valencia will take an away goal into the return leg in Spain on 23 February.

They were worthy winners for a performance that combined flair, grit and hard work to bring Stoke's unbeaten home record in Europe to an end.

Messi. I'd rather have Ronaldo at Leicester though, think Messi needs a better team around him than Ronaldo to have a proper effect, but I do think Messi is the better player.

I love it when people say this but I don't agree, Messi would tear them a new one.

This is why I'd take watching Ronaldo over Messi 9 times out of 10 and why Ronaldinho is No.1 by a mile for me.

The Championship will be a tough league next year, so possibly he won't.

Voted for Messi, finest player i've ever seen. Ronaldo is immense though.

Hate it when people say Messi should prove himself in the prem, prem defences are as bad as spanish, if not worse. To say messi wouldnt be able to get through stoke, wigan, west brom etc teams is laughable. The same guy that scored 4 in one game against Arsenal lets not forget.

The form Stoke are in, Michael Johnson would dick all over them, let alone Messi.
