Corky Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Yep, they also scored goals from open play unlike our superstar. Oh, we not including his last three goals now?
Captain... Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 If danny drinkwater was playing how nugent is, he would be crucified. Only by morons who always look to criticise our players.
Captain... Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 If we can find a better striker than Nugent and afford him then lete sign him up. Simple. We don't need potential WE NEED FOCKIMG GOALS I feel better :-) As long as these FOCKIMG goals don't come from the penalty spot.
Guest Col city fan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 I'm genuinely quite astounded by this thread. David Nugent has been the clubs top scorer in consecutive seasons (Wood's goals for Millwall aside). This season, again he's the top scorer by some distance and is our second best 'assister' (Dyer being the first). Yet some people still want to slate the bloke. I'm not advocating he can't be dropped because no player should automatically think he's indespensible. Of course not. But to get some of the criticism he is doing is bewildering. I would be very very surprised, should we ever want to sell Nugent, if nearly every Championship club didn't come sniffing after him. At this level, he is an important part of our team. And as for 'Johnny Cash'... Get back to your Country and Western singing son. Leave the football to those who know about it.

If not, we've got players who can come in and are guaranteed to provide more and are better than Nugent, obviously.

Aus Fox Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Correct, he was 16. made his debut in 2005 against palace. Obviously a massive difference, so at the same time as james vaughan made his debut for everton in the season they came 4th in the "best division in the world" David nugent aged 19 had scored 11 goals in league 2, the same season that bury fc came 17th. The fact he signed at 14 is not used by me to "Make my weak argument look stronger" It's a fact!! People using past records as guidance of ability, Mentioning that nugent had a better goalscoring record than vaughan at his time at everton, VAUGHAN WAS 16 when he made his premier league debut, Nugent was 19, playing in a struggling bury side 3 DIVISIONS BELOW, and people are talking about records? To be honest I'd hope that at 19 year old david nugent scored more goals in league 2 than a 16 year old in the premiership? or do you disagree? James vaughan has had a torrid time with injuries and looks to be getting himself back to fitness, and is now showing his potential, David nugent showed his class is this level over the course of the past 5-7 years. If vaughan was playing for everton in the premierleague at 16, do you think he would of done a job at a struggling league 2 side? That was the reason i posted about his age, how can you compare 2 players, seperated by 3 years age, one being classed as an adult the other being a kid, seperated by 3 leagues? 1 team coming 4th in the most competitive league in the world, the other almost being relegated in a poor league.. To be fair at the same time as this Stuart Wilson had 30 odd appearances in arguably the most successful Leicester team if recent times scoring a handful of goals. So is he better than Nugent? Did he improve as he grew older? For Every Wayne Rooney you name there are 10 youngsters making premier league debuts playing a few games and scoring goals, but never fulfilling any potential or improving.
Dan Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 I completely lose track of what Lee is saying at times.
tomtom Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 Nugent hasn't been on top goalscoring form (as many have identified) since Feb, but this season his contributions in all but a couple of games have been significant. There have been numerous arguments about penalties and open play, but the total goals scored by the team is the only figure that counts. I don't care whether the only goalscorers are Konch and Moore, if we only score goal kicks, or indeed if we win every game 1-0. If we are judging by numbers, the only one that matters is the one to the left of our name in the table. Lee, most of your posts are about improving the team we have and that is a positive ambition, but to make your point you are too critical of what we have. What we have is a very strong squad who play well together and are winning most of the games they play. We are now able to come from behind, to beat negative teams, to win when playing badly. We aren't winning comfortably as often, but we aren't losing as often either. Young and ambitious is important, but some experienced heads are necessary as well. Nugent is one of the best forwards in the league, and one of the older heads in our team too. Should we go up, I'd argue we'd want him in the side for his experience in the PL and as a longstanding member of our side; should we not go up, and assuming he continues to perform as he has over the last 3 seasons, he's a top Championship striker and we want him in the team. Anyone similar we replace him with will cost as much, including players like Vaughan who I don't feel offers anything more. Nigel has trimmed a lot of fat from the squad, and the high earners who weren't contributing enough have gone. People who want to see Nugent, Morgan and Kasper go are taking it too far. If we make it into the PL, and stay up, we'll evolve beyond some of the current players, but it's too soon to be saying they're not good enough. Well said that man,

Totally agree with all of this , especially the part about under rating what we have You can t argue with the progress that has been made. Only part I take slight issue with is the last para. Don t want to see those players leave, but don t want the club to be held to ransom to keep them either.

Fox92 Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 Yep, they also scored goals from open play unlike our superstar. I don't think anyone claims Nugent to be a 'superstar'. He's our striker, and our best one at that. His movement is better than the rest of our strikers, and apart from Vardy, nobody matches Nugent's workrate. He's scored 15(+) since joining the club, what more do you want? I think that's a good return at this level. Don't forget the fact he actually turned up in our big games unlike other players, in the play offs, and scored in both the home tie and away tie. Nugent has scored a lot of penalties. So what? If he scores another 30 this season and it's the difference between going up and staying down, I'd take it. His two goals last week at Ipswich were quality, especially his first goal, which was good technique. I hope Nugent scores today, I hope he scores every game. He's well on the way for 15+ goals again this season. What's his record so far? 10 in 16? Not a bad return imo. .
Happy Fox Posted 30 November 2013 Author Posted 30 November 2013 I think Johnny Cash's grievance and like so many of those critical of Nugent is that he didn't take the pen in the semi final against Watford. Need to move on and forget!
cityfanlee23 Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 Very sad, on my mobile here!! Played well today for the first time in a while, didn't get his goal and probably should have, but played well, got about and showed that workrate for the first time in ages for me, Good on the lad, 1 good game in a while though so I won't hold my breath.

ImBlue Posted 1 December 2013 Posted 1 December 2013 I signed up just for this thread. The criticism of David Nugent is beyond unfair. He is one of the best strikers in the league and regardless of whether he is scoring from open play or the spot if its winning games it will do me fine. How many times when ronaldo scores 40 in 40 games do people start removing penalties and free kicks? Same with RVP, Gerrard etc. He had a lovely run of penalties but there is a chance it will even out over te season and he will be no better off than other penalty takers in the league, yet still right up there in the scoring charts. Get behind him, and the club as the clubs fortunes depend on our players.

ktfox59 Posted 2 December 2013 Posted 2 December 2013 Someone posting with a modicum of common sense. Wow. Well done. As a season ticket holder, I find the subject bizarre. Yes nuge misses some sitters. Dont they all? But to slate a guy who has 10 before dec 1st is laughable. Yes 6 penos. But they dont count?? Also a top guy off pitch too. And no im not his dad. But am a dad thats witness to his off field generosity
