Captain... Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 It wasnt used as a pessimistic argument. You are making out that it was. The league cup triumph against Borough was done on the back of Borough being favourites (if I recollect properly) and us grinding out victories over the course of a campaign. Was that the cup run where we beat Man Utd (albeit a weakened side) at home and NEVER looked like losing? The point remains.... we were never favourites for the cup that season but tghe never give up attitude, along with some real quality, saw us through. A direct comparison CAN be made, in terms of effort, commitment and belief with Tuesday nights capitulation against Man City. You simply dont want a comparison to be made because it doesnt fit with you? Im guessing you see it as Pearson bashing perhaps? As somebody else said (Prussian?), Tuesday nights performance, in front of a full house of expectant fans, came over more like a training session for 'the big game' on Saturday. MON'S teams kinda saw every game as a big game. Thats why he and his squad are legendary in the eyes of the older City fans and why the cup has our name on it. IF we now go on to lose tomorrow, it would have been a VERY dissappointing week for us all. If we win, great... But I would still have liked to have seen a Leicester City side (whoever was managing it... theres the clue) put in a more spirited challenge than they did on Tuesday. I was brought up with better and expect better. I don't remember if we were favourites or not, but I'm pretty sure we were above them in the league at that point, I know we finished top 10 and they got relegated, despite their superstars, Ravenelli, Junhinio, Emerson, they were not an amazing team. That season we also lost by 2 goals after being completely outplayed by a top side. I do agree with what you are saying though, compared to the "give everything for the cause in every game" attitude of that side, this side and every other side since MON, has been lacking, but it is a different game now compared to 15 years ago, you don't see teams like us or the Wimbledon of that era any more. I don't know if it is that the technical side and organisation of teams these days mean it is very easy to counteract that style of play, or whether sport science developments tend to move away from charging around like a headless chicken and towards a more efficient use of energy. I don't know, but it is not just us that don't play like that anymore it is everyone.
HesNotGudjonsonn2 Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 I love the free kick we did against Tranmere with Lennon shooting. May not have scored that time but try that tomorrow with Knockaert having the shot and you never know.
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 Garry Parker was a cracking and elegant player
Buce Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 - He had a bad spell with england and forest, apart from that has been successful, and has turned derby around completely... I was not saying that I want and unfassionable squad of nobodies... What I am saying is that I want the passion, determination, and dedication to the club that those "Nobodies" had (I didn't mean all the time, Nobody had heard of most of them at the time we had the success) - we used to be a club with more Vardy type players than not. Now we have a couple who would do anything for the club.. the rest are prima d's, Jumping out of tackles, Low morale if we lose and all that bollocks, No grit or determination to most extents..... - I didnt mention that I wanted to play the style of football they played, I want the spirit we had those days of "I dont care how we win WE WILL WIN" Matty Elliott scoring 11 in a season? Be lucky if morgan won 11 headers from a set piece in his career with us... (Saying that he dominates most headers in open play when the striker has to try to back into him) I'm not saying I want us to sign typical 00' players, and play typical 00' football... I just want us to have that Unity, Determination, Passion, PRIDE of playing for us. Fvcking die for 3 points attitude. Nowadays if we come up against a rough center half they cry their eyes out... I remember Ron atkins having a go at st ledger when he was at peterborough, sledge made a massive mistake trying to control the ball, turn and pass in his own box, lost it and they conceeded, Ron: "Why did you do that, You're a defender, defenders do not do that" Sledge: "Well rio does" Ron: "Yeah well John terry doesnt, and he's a proper centre half" I want that John terry attitude, Solid at the back, conformed in midfield and wouldnt jump out of a tackle, that striking pair running down the heels of the defenders.. A creative flair would be a bonus, But It won't get us out of this league alone. I never thought this day would come, Lee, but I agree with every word. I must be getting soft in my old age
Stadt Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 As much as you want 'grit' I just don't think there are many players like that anymore, and you definitely wouldn't be able to make a team out of them. I don't know whether it's down to the money but most players just don't seem to have the enthusiasm to actually care more than they have to.
foxfanazer Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 Great video. Thanks! Absolutely loved Steve Walsh. Mr Leicester!
Corky Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 ? Im pretty sure that Borough were the favourites? Juninho, Ravenelli etc. Oh come on Col, it's no comparison. Boro finished 18th that season, we finished 9th. They had the better technical players but ultimately we finished well clear of them. Man City, even their reserves, are streets ahead of not just us but many Premier League sides. Yes we didn't play particularly well and could've done more but this Man City side and that Middlesbrough team are not remotely similar.

Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 The Claridge quote is classic about Heskey and Juninho: 'Emile's was just being so laid back. Stop being so aggressive Juninho. Theres absolutely no need for it' Took an awful lot to get Emile going'

I think they were On the 96/97 season review, the narrator says "the Teesiders were the bookies favourites." Might well have had something to do with the 3-1 mauling they (Juninho) gave us at Filbert Street just after we got to the final.

kingfox Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 Best moment from that era for me. When Arnar Gunnlaugsson scored against Derby, cracking goal as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKAzIh8sP7c
Raj Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 You do all know we will never ever repeat such fetes !
sylofox Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 For the old boys Orient away will take some beating. Our coach got lost out the back window we had jimmy bloomfield following. We held up our hands and he directed us in. All we had to do was win and sunder loose at cardiff. 1-0 up all happy then on the radio sunderland 1 up. still partying but not happy. Then a silence befor a roar cardiff 1-1 on the radio's in the ground. we could win the league but they had another game on tuesday. (west ham) Then for a second word filtered through then for a second play seemed to stop (cardiff 2-1sunderlad) Mnutes to go 13k city fans going mad. Madness erupts jon o'niel lost his shorts orient lost there goal post's. Filling an away ground the best ever way to do it. And boy did we fill that ground no tickets just turn up. Ask anyone that was on the train that broke down arrived 10 mins after kick off they stormed the gates. Not many of them paid but all great fun
DennisNedry Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 Football has moved on (in a bad way) Clubs such as ours cannot hope to challenge the Top 6 in the Premiership. The MON Leicester side would have been as comfortably beaten by Man City on Tuesday!

I remember arriving at the ground; City fans asking which part of the ground we should go in, and being told any of the four stands. I was near the gates that buckled under the pressure of the crowd outside and was swept inside for free; my super honest brother managed to fight his way to the turnstile block to pay. And at the end of the game, a couple of City fans who had invaded the pitch were on top of the crossbar; this made the tannoy announcer shriek something about protecting the goal, at which point lots more people piled on top and the goal collapsed. The pitch was covered with celebrating fans; no bother; no criminal offences comitted. I remember some people sending Orient some money afterwards as compo for the goalpost. Great to experience days like that.
Bert Posted 20 December 2013 Posted 20 December 2013 ? Im pretty sure that Borough were the favourites? Juninho, Ravenelli etc. Correct. We were the underdogs. They beat us 3-1 at Filbert Street not long before the final.
Soar Fox Posted 21 December 2013 Posted 21 December 2013 We possibly could have had a Fa Cup final appearance if we weren't cheated away at Chelsea.
Aus Fox Posted 21 December 2013 Posted 21 December 2013 I see what you are saying about to the grit and determination of that team, it was brilliant winning at Old Trafford, Anfield, white Heart Lane great days out. But I don't think football is played that way anymore, I cant think of a single team at the minute that has the spirt fight and grit that team had. In fact I can't think of a single player that does.
