davieG Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 1 year deal, I really don't see the problem even if he doesn't play it's a clever bit of insurance with out breaking the bank to see us through our first season back in the pl.
Ric Flair Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 These people moaning, I thought Nigel and Walsh's recruitment policy was second to none? If so, why the negativity? They know what they're doing. People moaned about GTF last year, about Phillips. Both played their part. We never at any point struggles and that's got have been down to experience that saw us through. It's May 23rd, it's not August 31st. We will bring in real quality before then, we are recruiting free transfers as we're able to right now. Chill out.
sphericalfox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Upson was previously captain at West Ham, and whilst he was outspoken about the handling of the club by its owners, he looks like he had the club/team's interest at heart. Fergie once said that he fields a team of captains. If Upson isn't first choice, he is in my view great to have around the club.
Tom's Pasta Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Brighton fans seem pretty gutted that he's left them and reckon he was their best defender. And this was the team with one of, if not the best defensive record in the league this season.
Captain... Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Not really excited about this... At 35, he's no better than Morgan, Was or Moore for me. I hope Moore, currently playing for England, will not be sacrificed. It is not an exciting signing, but then when was the last time we made an exciting signing? He is a solid signing. We also have to realise the rules have changed, the 25 man squad means that we will need cover in all positions and we can't rely on getting as few injury problems as last season, and we won't be able to make loans. Last season we often didn't have a CB on the bench, Moore had a couple of injuries and if Was or Wes had got injured in that time we would have been screwed... until we brought in a loan. This season we won't have that luxury, we will need at least 4 centre backs, but I expect us to pick up at least one more, especially as Liam is classed as U21.
teblin Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Solid signing. Played in the prem before which not of the other CB have and also he's left sided.
Turner1994 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Ridiculous how upset some on twitter are over this. Brightons player of the year and has prem experience, and its not like he's cost us £10million is it.

egg_fried_rice Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Good prem experience, one year on a free, and showed he is still capable of performing in the majority of his performances last season. He won't be first choice, so personally I think this is a solid signing. Welcome Matt
lavrentis Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 What's wrong with average? Average is half way up the league - I'll take that! Do not get me wrong, If we get anywhere near 10th i'll be over the moon. I'll trust Pearsons judgement but if anyone said we'd be signing Upson even last year I'd have laughed. I just think he is past it, that being said he probably wont play too many games.
Ashley Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 So the poster yesterday could have been right then? Nick Powell next incoming? After all he did say Upson and young Man UTD player at training ground yesterday.
ozleicester Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 A good prem team needs a balance of youth and ex[experience... there's a place for both, looks like another decent bit of business
bovril Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Some people are talking about Morgan like he's played in the top half of the Prem all of his life! And Moore is merely a promising youngster with limited experience.
ealingfox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 So the poster yesterday could have been right then? Nick Powell next incoming? After all he did say Upson and young Man UTD player at training ground yesterday. Presumably the Man U guy was Jack Barmby.

coolhandfox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Great season with Brighton, there fans are gutted to see him go! Solid business by NP, already strengthening key areas.

Babylon Posted 23 May 2014 Author Posted 23 May 2014 I just think he is past it 47 games for a team with the second best defence in the league is hardly past it. That's probably more games than most players in the champ started last year. If we're expecting him to be first choice all the time in the prem, then I can perhaps understand peoples worries. But I'd imagine that's unlikely, it will be much more of a GTF, Hammond, Phillips type role that he will play.

That bottom line is pretty much what I said after you cut my quote off. 35/36 year old defender in the premier league can get found out but I doubt he'll get played every game. In pearson we trust
Captain... Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Craig Dawson. Sounds good to me, Schmeichel, Hamer, Logan/Smith, Morgan, Moore, Was, Upson, Dawson Looks like we are getting our back line sorted first, next stop a couple of full backs, a CM a winger (Albrighton?), then we should have about £30m left to spunk on a quality striker, sorted.
XLM Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Great season with Brighton, there fans are gutted to see him go! Solid business by NP, already strengthening key areas. This. We needed the competition at centre back almost as much as we needed it in goal. And so far we've signed two of the championships outstanding performers in those areas for absolutely nothing. IMO we wouldn't be able to find a defender as good as Upson for less than £2m at the moment anyway - good, economical business there.
mhs123 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Experience helped us get in the prem and experience will help keep us there.

Dan Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Not the most exciting signing but Pearson's been here long enough to have won me over regarding being in the know when it comes to signings. I can't tell if it's a very clever signing on a free, or if he's under-estimating the Premier League. "Its me" 1, loads of others 0
