Upson Signed - Confirmed

We've now got 2 defenders with Champions League/Premier League experience albeit they're both a bit old. 1 newbie to the Premier League and 1 talented youngster with bags of potential. I guarantee that Burnley and Derby won't have that.

Upson is still a class above btw. Better than Was.

Dreadful signing. Do we have no money then? You cannot survive in the prem on the cheap. Do not understand this at all.

Calm down bro its f**king May! we have plenty of time to bring in some players.

It is about bringing in quality to our squad depth not necessarily our first team yet, though I suspect we will sign 3 first team players which will command wonga.

Another of of the players from the worst England side programme the other night lol

Well on a positive, he is the last England player to score at the world cup.

Bore off, you can't really spend any money yet, only pick up free agents.

Decent, experienced, internationally capped defender. Getting on a bit but was Brightons player of the year. If he's good enough for a Pearson then he's good enough for me.

People like you are the ones who will be calling for Pearson out when we're 15th in January. Big time mentality when we're still a small fish in a big pond.

Will reserve judgement until I see him play and see what he still has to offer.

however having watched that england's worst eleven thing the other night, his performance against germany at the world cup scares me a little lol

Not really a signing to get the heart racing, but comments from Brighton fans like:

Please say it isn't so.

Devastating news if true, we've lost our rock.

Seems they are genuinely sad to see him go, so will hopefully provide good competition

I'm not going to complain about this one...

I can see the sense in the deal: experience, left-sided centre half (allowing Morgan to play on his favoured right-side), one-year deal, free transfer. But I just can't help but feel he almost fills the same position in the squad Wasyl has, as an experienced back-up to a pairing of Morgan and a real top quality, experienced partner.

Whilst a first choice pairing of Morgan and Upson wouldn't be disastrous, I can't help but feel we could spend a bit of money and get a better option there. Is Nige really going to want 5 centre backs (Morgan, Moore, Upson, Wasyl and A.N.Other)? Probably not, so it looks like we'll be going with just those four.

John Terry was even worse!

lol

Yeh because Hamer & Upson are the only players we're going to sign all summer.

Can't survive on the cheap? Myth.

Oh, look. Mr. Depression makes his daily appearance.

Not really excited about this... At 35, he's no better than Morgan, Was or Moore for me. I hope Moore, currently playing for England, will not be sacrificed.

He was their player of the year last season, which would suggest he was a consistently good performer.

For those reading hes 35 and dismissing him off hand, get your heads examined.

Yes that is exactly what Nigel will want, we need a squad of 25 to get us through to January, that includes dealing with injuries, suspensions and tactical changes, having 5 centre backs also gives us the option of playing a back 5/3.

The 25 man squad means no changes until the January window opens, NP has no idea how Moore, Morgan or Was will perform in the Prem, Moore might be overawed by the situation, have a stinker in his first game and lose all confidence, Morgan might get injured, Was might pick up a suspension, we need options and we need depth, we can't rely on loans, or playing Konchesky at CB.

Upson might not play a single minute of football next season, but we can't rely on having no injuries, no suspensions, no fatigue and no loss of form, and being able to play 442 the whole time, not in the premiership.

The fact he was free, and presumably not going to be demanding that he is in the starting line up, as well as vastly experienced, and still clearly fit enough, makes it an astute bit of business in my book.

He has something none of those players have - experience in the Premiership.

I don't really get this argument. Yes he has premiership experience but what is that really worth?. He's getting on a bit and most would agree he's no better than what we have. Is PL experience really a good reason to sign someone?

Not totally against this signing by the way, we need squad players

Yeah in the Championship. As I said in the other thread, if we were in Brighton's position (a Championship club), then I'd be pleased with him.

Just that in the Premier League, at 35, I feel he could get caught out. He's never been the fastest player anyway, never mind now. Bovril made a good point regarding he brings Premier League experience, but that's all I feel he brings. I hope he doesn't get in the team ahead of Moore, that's more to the point I am making.

In Nige we trust, though.

For a team aspiring to stay in the prem which is our goal ( although I think we can finish 14th place) he is the right signing.

I think so, imagine you are Liam Moore and walking out at Anfield or Old Trafford, these places are going to be intimidating, having players like Upson and Konch strolling along like it is just another game will have a calming factor, he will know what it is like to face up against Suarez, Torres, Rooney, Van Persie and that sort of experience could be huge to help the likes of Moore and Morgan who won't have faced that kind of quality.

People going on about his age. Age means nothing if your fit and wanting to play football. One of the reason Everton have had such a good season is because of Sylvain Distin he is 36 and played 33 games last season. Upson will be used when required and sure will slot in fine.
