Fraizer Campbell

Now why wouldn`t that surprise me! :D

Anyway back on subject, i think Campbell would be a decent signing.

I`d see him more as competition for Vardy than Nugent.

Similar player to Vardy, so an ideal replacement if Vardy was injured, suspended or out of form.

I felt we missed Vardy when he was out at the end of last season, we lost his energy and pace, and his closing down, and Campbell has the same attributes, so if we pull this deal off, and especially at £800,00, i`d be happy with that myself.

Yep spot on!

All that talk about Nugent, and now everyone is agreeing that in reality he's more likely to be competition for Vardy than Nuge? lol

I can see this working quite well to be honest. There's no guarantee that Vardy is going to be able to make the step up instantly (if at all, although it looks likely he will) and if he doesn't, then we'll have lost the up front focus of our attacking play - speed. Someone like Campbell to come in and challenge Vardy for the spot means that we've got great backup if either of them loses form at any point/gets injured/we need another option, and if Vardy isnt quite able to make it in the prem, we'll have a very good, proven prem player waiting in the wings to pick up that role until we can strengthen/Vardy improves.

Thought the thread was about Campbell and i reckon he is a fair bit better than Waghorn, if he keeps Vardy,Nugent,Wood out the team great, if somebody else comes in and keeps him out the team great. if we do so well next season that the likes of Moore,Konch,James,Nugent,Knocky and Vardy can't get in the team great. Time and time again first team starters  this season got a suspension or injury when playing well and their replacements came in and performed and kept them out the side. Though we had a smallish squad this season the strength in depth served us so well so lets let NP and co get on with it.

Thank you. I don't ask for everyone to agree with me, most clearly don't but I like to contribute to the conversation. I'm not saying all this to get myself a reputation like others do here, I genuinely believe in what I am saying.

They do mate, maybe not on this thread as I've not read every single post but we've had many Nugent threads and those comments have been posted.

Mods, have a word.

Who would you have played or signed to play in the Nugent role last season?

The 'Nugent role' is the more familiar number 10 role. I think that position is suited to Knockeart.

Nugent played the role okay, he wasn't exceptional, he wasn't awful. Do I think he can make the step up next season? No. Is he worth the money we're going to end up paying him? No.

Fraizer Campbell would be a good addition, I think he is an upgrade on Nugent.

As opposed to Nugent is irreplaceable, only he can play the number 10 role, he had a baby a year ago so maybe he is tired rubbish that other people spout.

One extreme to the other, mine is just not supported by cheerleaders.

I haven't seen anyone say that.

Since Nugent joined he's averaged 18 goals a season over three years. Who was the last player to do that for us? Plus his assists and link-up play.

Yes, he might not be Premier League class, but with 54 goals and many more assists over three years I think he deserves a little bit more than to be called useless and crap, as seen on here before.

The part I highlighted is the bit I found most interesting. Is Campbell really an upgrade on Nugent? By the sounds of it they are completely different kinds of player so it seems unfair to say whether one is better than the other as they both offer different attributes to the team. Personally, I would like to go into next season with both Nugent and Campbell, Campbell to provide competition with Vardy and Nugent to battle with a new target man to play next to Vardy/Campbell.

So he was "crap", but "not awful".

Correct, different words with different definitions.

So why did you say he "wasn't exceptional", what did that add exactly?

The point of saying something like "he wasn't great, nor was he awful" is usually used to suggest he was In between the two.

Knockaert is way too greedy to play the role that Nugent played last season.

He is a very good young English player who would be an asset for a team like us.  The fact he could be got for as little as 800,000 is even more appealing.

Does getting Campbell mean we don't get someone else who plays as a striker, no.  as i have suggested in other post's a lot of teams will do their major acquisitions post the World Cup. It is like a players shopping centre with players, agents, mangers and football directors all in one place.  I would be surprised if NP and or others from the team management were not in Brazil looking over the cattle on display.

Nobody including him was any good at netting for Cardiff.  Their midfield was horrible, so its not easy to judge his play last year.  I would say that he is a high upside player.  If indeed he is over his injuries and we give our front men some service, he could do quite well.

All of the signings so far except Hamer bring significant PL experience which should be very valuable.  They also shore up positions that needed some depth or improvement.  Perhaps the strategy is to assemble a squad frugally by the means we are seeing now, then take a chance on one or two big signings later without them having the expectation that such signings would have to be the cornerstone of the team.  Instead they could complement who is already here.

Does anyone know if he has spent anytime on the flank in his career? I seem to remember him tormenting Man U, when he made his comeback for Sunderland, from the left.

he scored 6 league goals.  which when you compare to the goals scored babs posted earlier was the norm. so in a poor side he still got the same as most other scorers. the people on that list are certainly not poor its just peoples expectations are higher and think loads of goals are going to be banged in when in reality there not.

I remember when he was on loan at Hull and played against us. Thought he was a tricky little bugger back then and thought he'd only get better with age.... Held hopes that he would sign for us one day...
