Starting a player with a fever?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Today we started JV against a very aggressive, hard working team whilst suffering with a fever.

Is this a sensible option, is it a bit Arsenal?

Yes Vardy is one of our most important players this season, but only because of the way he plays. No one, even Vardy, can be even close to 100% fit if suffering with a fever.

Surely resting an unfit player is always a better option, even if you have to change your style of play at the last minute?

Even Claudio admitted we only started playing well in the last 30 mins, just when Vardy goes off!

We either need to trust the players that we do have to be a back up, or buy some better back up players. It's that simple really. He's looked off the pace for a while now and needs a rest.

Difficult call, and one you can only make with all the info, Vardy would have been saying he feels good enough to play, he will have had all the medication he needs, but in hindsight you have to say it was the wrong decision, but if we had rested Vardy and lost one nil with Vardy coming on for the last 30 minutes and looking lively we would be saying the same.

Liverpool don't usually play like that at home so there's no way Ranieri would know they would be as aggressive or intense or hard-working as that. Klopp changed his own system to match up against us just for today.

Having said that, I'd imagine Ranieri or other backroom staff would have had a chat with Vardy to see if he himself felt like he could play today. If Vardy says yes and you'd genuinely believe him, why would you go against him? Especially with his personality whereby he will almost always give 100%. So it didn't work out for him today because of Liverpool's style of play as well as his own health. It happens.

Didn't realise Vardy has Asthma until today, good to see someone with his work rate doesn't let asthma get in the way of his game. I suffer with asthma very bad, csn do 90 minutes without my inhaler but stand there laughing and I need the puffer lol

Probably our most important player and certainly one you'd want going at their mediocre defence. Worth the gamble.

When fit though. If Vardy doesn't run, what does he bring?

And to a previous point, I'm sure Vardy would want to play whatever, but it's up to the Dr's/physio's to be sensible. I.e fever =/= 100%

With a fever if Vards says he's ok to play there's not much you can do. You only really see the effects of it on his game when he's actually playing in the match. Due to his quality he'd still be able to perform warm up drills etc convincingly. Unfortunately you could see that he was obviously affected by it once he started which was especially bad due to his workrate and pressing being his strongest attributes

No and it could result in his being drained even longer.

He also picked up a knock, perhaps through a lack of his usual sharpness. It's always tempting to play your best players whatever but it's folly most of the time...and evidence of how badly we need two more good strikers. By that I mean hardworking goalscorers not occasional supplementaries operating out of midfield.

They should be there as an extra, not as a front line.

The last call to play would of been Vardy and he must of said he was fine to be on the field for 60 mins. Therefore is probably worth the risk with how unpredictable their defence can be.

I think today probably highlights our need for another player like Vardy, maybe then he wouldn't of been risked and allowed time for full recovery same as the injuries he is supponsingly playing through too. Our style of play is all about hitting teams on the break and Vardy playing off the shoulder, Ulloa likes the ball to feet and play off players, Kram like to collect from deep and Shinji to be perfectly honest I'm not too sure about lol but there must be a reason why even today he could of been pushed into Vardys position and Ulloa play off him behind?

Take Vardy out the team and you change the shape and formulae of the team

Didn't we pick Beckford in similar circumstances when he scored the hat-trick against Forest? I don't remember the thread on Foxes Talk bemoaning that decision.

Jamie Vardy probably hasn't been 100% since the Sunderland game and he's always been willing to push through. I'd be surprised if he didn't insist on playing today.

He's due for an oil change and a tune up some time in January, so they're getting what they can get out of his engine now.

At least its two days between games and not one.

As mentioned before, it was a risk that didnt come up and highlighted the needs for a Vardy style back up striker.

If he's still suffering by Tuesday then I dont think we should play him (let him rip Bournemouth to shreds). Problem is who do we play up front then?

I said earlier yesterday morning he wasn't playing due to illness at golf so I was shocked to see him start, if he is ill we have to rest him, just hope Kante doesn't catch it as he's our top player at the minute and we definitely need Drinky back.....

Up the City......

Tell me about it, I just decide not to laugh at anything anymore. Just not worth the hassle.

The sensible option would've been to correctly assess his health at half-time and take him off the pitch. He looked drained and bereft of any energy and Ranieri should've spotted that early enough.

I'd rather have a more fully fit Vardy back for the Manchester City home game than risk him being out for two to three games because his condition has worsened.

Highlights our lack of depth. We need to buy in January. Simple as that! All these people saying that we're top so we don't need anybody are naive imo. Take Vardy and Mahrez out and we simply don't have goals

Totally agree.

Have total faith in our sports science/medical team and would have been an informed decision. We just were not at the races first half so JV had little chance to do anything, we didn't throw enough at their defence to test them. Prior to the substitution Vardy had been taken out by Emre Can so maybe the call was made then to bring off him and Mahrez who was very quiet.
