That's indicative of severe depression where a medical professional should usually be prescribing some intervention to improve matters.  Please consider contacting your GP.

At the 6/27 level I doubt that a medical professional would have concerns (incidentally when I was diagnosed as having depression I was convinced that I didn't have it and only came to realise that I did after treatment commenced).

 

I can't comment on the 'loading' of the questionnaire, it only came to my attention as one that is used by the medical profession.  There is a similar one (GAD-7) for anxiety.

Kind of been avoiding this website in general for various reasons but wanted to come back to this thread. Does anyone else struggle with justifying their depression? Like I know that some people have it much harder and that I have a lot of things to be grateful for in life, yet I still feel like I have nothing. Then I end up feeling guilty that I can't enjoy the things in my life that I have that many people would be desperate for

It seems a bit like you're self-stigmatising. You often hear about others saying 'what have you got to feel depressed about?' however you're asking it to yourself. I think it's a phase that we've (people with poor MH) have experienced at some stage.

 

For me, acceptance was a big part of overcoming it.You can have everything you want and feel depressed, they can live in tandem and it's not either or. You don't have to beat yourself up over it and it's ok to be that way.

Just to add to @Lionator's spot on reply.

 

It's not a competition. What's happening to you, in your heart and mind, is happening to you. You can't help that. Don't punish yourself for what you perceive to be unjustified pain in comparison to others. Most of all be kind to yourself. It took me a long time to realise that, mostly because of the help from people on this thread.

Just a quick message to any one planning on going to uni if you suffer from depression apply for the Disabled Student Allowance no actual cash but can provide laptop, dictaphone to record lectures etc. But the main thing it gets you is a learning support plan that makes getting extensions etc when you are struggling to cope with life let alone a doing a degree much easier with out having to explain that strugglung to live is diffficult enough let alone handing in an assignment this week. Just gives you a little breathing space they have to be handed in at some point. I also go additional time in exams as well as being in a smaller room with less people in there to help keep the stress levels down.

I don't, dude. But I've used this thread a couple of times when in a hole.

 

Type out what's troubling you on here in a post. I found that in itself quite cathartic and some of the posters on here offer some great insight

Don't try and justify any sort of mental health issue pal 

You may have everything in life, money,health,great job,great family and none of it matters when  the darkness decided to play with you.

I've ended up reading about 5-5 boxing autobiographies to put refocus my thoughts.

Try ANYTHING you can to take the negatively out of your mind,Yiu don't always have to feel to research about things too much.

One of the books I suggested above is called 'Do Nothing' which I know sounds counter productive.

 

The premise of the book is that when a negative thought enters our head, we do nothing about it. We don't give it any conscious awareness, we don't shine a light on it, we don't catastrophise, we don't ask "What if...?" and we don't believe it to be real - we just recognize it as a thought and wait for a more empowering thought to come along - and it will.

 

I think where many people slip into anxiety and ultimately depression is that they believe their negative thoughts to be true. We then go down rabbit holes and spirals of negative thinking which makes the issue seem bigger and more real. 

 

We can't control the 40,000 thoughts we have a day (some positive, some negative) but we CAN choose which ones to pay attention to.

 

"We are living in the feeling of our thinking" 100% of the time...

Overthinking is a MASSIVE issue.

I couldn't sleep for years for overthinking whereby my Mrs' attitude to life if fantastic. She's just like 'Oh well..."

BUt you can learn,like me to try and not overthink which can lead to anxiety but the little bastard is always trying to lurk in the background

I firmly believe that we were all born with innate health and well-being and that is our natural/default state. Babies and young kids don't need therapy or antidepressants so what the fvck happened to us? We started to have thoughts and then we started thinking about our thinking (overthinking as you say) and it can send us crazy.

 

We start to believe that outside events make us feel unhappy, angry, stressed but that's not how the experience of life works IMHO. It's our thinking about the event that makes us feel a certain way so it starts from the Inside Out, not Outside In.

 

Sorry, I could rabbit on about this shit all night :rolleyes:

I say it's like we are a boxer just constantly trying to get to the end of the round. We have a rest but the fight and rounds will probably continue....it's a long long bout but as long as we don't get knocked out we will be okay!!!!

I found The Feeling Good Handbook by David D Burns MD to be very helpful.  It was instrumental in making me realise that my thoughts during depression were not balanced.  Changing the way I thought was central to me overcoming depression and preventing its return.
