The past couple of weeks have been really testing. Not just with worry about the virus but also with my wedding being cancelled, I cant visit or hug my dad who has dementia and last night my cat died. I know there are many bigger and harder issues around at the moment but I feel completely empty.

I struggled badly while I was at uni, which is over ten years ago now and had been keeping on top of things fairly well over the years. I now feel back under a dark cloud.

Ah that sucks. RIP BeardyCat.  Is there anyway you can talk to your dad over the phone or Skype?  Not the same but better than nothing - My Dad lives in France so I rarely see him but we talk every couple of weeks and it helps.

I call every few days but he doesn't tend to stay on much because he's hard of hearing, not quite got round to Skype yet, they had to send me their laptop to install it for them so I'm not confident in their ability to master video!

You can get subtitles on skype mate, might help. I tried it briefly with a couple work people and it surpisingly did ok, just a little lag.

Doesn't work with Glaswegians, mind.

Anyone else struggling to sleep so badly?

Don't think I've fallen asleep before 2/3 am since this lockdown began. I'm pretty sure it's due to the extra energy having done very little during the day. I'd try going for walks but my arthritis in my knee is worse than it has ever been after having a kick around in the garden with my son a couple of weeks ago. Added to that I'm recently getting pains in my fingers and wrist that have me worried I may becoming arthritic in them too. Brilliant for a 34 year old.

Pinning my hopes on that being as a result of adjusting to working on a laptop.

My knee is now crunching as I walk up stairs so loudly that my Mrs can hear me approaching over the tv, makes me feel physically sick just hearing it.

I agree mate, I suffered insomnia in the past to the extent I didn't fall asleep until 5am and having to get up at 7. I was on zopiclone for a while, and then stopped after I came a little reliant.

These past few weeks I have felt the insomnia coming back :/ I hope you manage to get a good night's kip soon

I have definitely heard others say this. I am feeling you with the knee thing - I just want to jump in a pool as that helps so much.

if you do want to get some exercise in to see if that helps you sleep, I recommend kickboxing workouts. They are really easy to do/modify in a way that is low impact, and i find are really great in stretching out tight leg muscles during the course of the workout, which can help no end.

Something which may help with insomnia and with no apparent side effects is Mirtazapine. SSRIs such Fluoxetine, Paroxetine and Sertraline seem to have bad side effects such as loss of libido and bad withdrawal symptoms when trying to come off them. However, during this extremely stressful time of lock-down and covidphobia, even Mirtazapine won't guarantee a full night's sleep.

This is going to sound a bit left field but I went through a very bad time around 12 months. I tried medication which basically made me suffer terrible violent nightmares.

Went to see a therapist unable to sleep etc etc.

They got me to try something called TRE. You basically make the  muscles in your body work on a way that makes you shake in a really odd way. Have to say I was more than sceptical. However, once I'd got the hang of it I did it for about 5-10 minutes every other evening. Within a couple of weeks I was sleeping better and started to feel more relaxed. After a few months I was a different person.

There are several on line videos to show you what to do. I know it sounds a bit out there but if you've tried everything else, like I had, then give it a go.

To everyone out there suffering and having a bad time, the best thing you can do is to talk about it. Many of us have been there and know how hard it is at times to cope. Stay strong and try to believe things will get better because they will.

Sorry about your cat Beardy. Never easy to lose a pet.

I'm guessing that a lot of people are suffering in silence right now.  Feeling down about the current situation is natural and may not be unhealthy but some may be experiencing depression.

I found a useful tool (used by the medical profession) to evaluate level of depression, if any.  It can be used by anyone and is just a series of self-assessment questions.

I really am not trying to cause any controversy here, or get anyone’s back up either. I scored on 6/27 on that ‘quiz’ and it suggested mild depression. I’m not depressed at all, I’m just genuinely concerned about what the future holds, and that sometimes gives me a few restless nights. I am really not trying to downplay anything some of you guys are going through right now, depression is a real thing I know that. I do feel that that quiz is top loaded towards giving a result of being depressed though, however mild.

If you go to CBT you have to fill that out every session.
