Champions League in the bag!

Big congratulations to the club - the players, owners, support, scouting and coaching staff.  This is a defining moment in our history.

All big clubs were small clubs once.  This provides us an opportunity to move up in the football world.

Hope I've read it wrong but I thought an earlier thread said England could only have a maximum of four clubs, and if Liverpool and Man. City won the cups and finished outside the top four, it would only be the top two?

Five I think mate.

I think we'll be fine but it wouldn't harm to see them both drop out this week - even though I'm always supportive of English teams in Europe!

Eh? It is impossible for us to be Pot 2/Pot 3

Don't you get a 'baseline' coefficient due to the league you come from? So a Premier League or La Liga club gets X points as opposed to a Latvian club that gets Y by default?

Wouldn't that figure likely see us in to 3 if we don't finish champions?

I'm still pinching misen...and no, it's not that rash I had last year come back. .

Spurs look really, really good right now, looking at their last 5 matches I can only see them potentially dropping points away to Chelsea. Thankfully we've got a good enough lead to allow us to slip up several times in the few games

A draw and four wins for them in the last five games would put them on 78, which means we would only need to win two and draw one of our remaining games to lift the trophy.

Yeah but it still wouldn't matter. Pot 2/3 would be full of teams who've played regular European football. Hertha Berlin in the same situation where if they qualify for the CL, they will be Pot 4.

I doubt it even if you do get a baseline coefficient. Roma were in pot 4 last year, Wolfsburg and Mönchengladbach were in Pot 4 this year. So even if we did get rewarded a few points because we're in the premier league I doubt it would be enough to get us out of pot 4.

I'm looking forward to the outrage by Souness and Quinn when we win our CL group with a goal difference of 6-0.

On a serious note, 3 key areas need strengthening if we are to compete in the Champions League and I hope we have a proper go at it.

A striker, a right back and.....

A ball playing CB. We can't go away to Benfica and have 34% possession. Huth and Morgan are great at that they do but they're not the greatest on the ball and they look uncomfortable with it if they have it for too long.

Or maybe I'm off my head with this.

No, I value your opinion and was interested - just trying to complete the puzzle.

Why not? What  good is 66% possession if you can't score.

When were English teams last dominating in Europe when we were trying to out pass and out dribble our European counter parts? Or when we were big strong fast and in their faces. You could argue we have been trying for too long now to imitate the European way, but we will never be able to out pass and out play Barcelona or Madrid. Stick to what we are good at solid defence, energetic midfield and pacy attack and a no nonsense approach to defending.

Morgan and Huth are good enough on the ball to set attacks going, and experienced enough to know how to deal with most situations, but more importantly they are not going to Stones it up by overplaying in dangerous situations  and give away cheap goals.

I'm sure it's possible to find a no nonsense defender who doesn't take risks... but can also pass a little.

This isn't just about champions league, but next season in the league. People are going to respect us like they are now and we need to improve all over the pitch if we want to stay near the top end of the league. Improving our ball retention and having better passing players, doesn't mean you have to take away from what we do now, it's about adding another string to our bow.

At the moment we're struggling a little attack wise compared to what we did as we never release the full backs. That's to protect Morgan and especially Huth, they will get done for pace if isolated too much. A quicker CB who is better on the ball, gives the potential to release a full back a bit more if we want to. We just need a few tweaks, not an overhaul.

Guaranteed we draw Athletico Madrid.... Again!

I'd be gutted if we don't make it any further than we did in European competitions before.

Really want to be first, to be in an easier group.

More pace at the back I would never argue against, but the request was a ball playing CB. I would not want to replace Huth's defensive ability with passing. If you could improve Huth's passing stats then great, or find a younger faster more comfortable on the ball version of Huth then brilliant. Where we have been successful is having players in a position that do that role. We don't have complete footballers, we have specialists, and I would rather have defenders that specialise in defending.

Absolutely, we just let people do what they are good at and set up so that their deficiencies aren't exposed. We've got that because we couldn't afford or attract those who probably have a more rounded skill set.

We're now shopping in a different league, or at least have the potential to. With us also looking rather more attractive than a team that scraped survival, or just got promoted. So we're at that point where we now might be able to get a Huth mk2 with pace, or a Wes Mk2 that can pass a bit. I think that's all people are saying, not a total change in style of player, just someone who has what we have now, but with added extras!

Madness. I remember thinking it was great when Spurs broke the big 4 and came 4th. Now I'm not even bothered about the Champions League, but just waiting for us to win the league.

Ha ha same... at this moment my mentality is "Champions league, yeah great whatever" lol

One thing is for certain that we'll have to add some real quality to the squad. We give the ball away far to often for our own good.

Teams who retain and use the ball well will beat us. We need another quality striker, a Ball playing midfielder who can play those delicate passes when in possession.

And a bit more pace at the back without losing any of the qualities Morgan and Huth possess.

Personally I'd prefer another top 4 challenge next season which would ensure our arrival as a top team, Conquering Europe can wait another few years.
