The 28-year-old only signed a new contract in Portugal last summer – on the understanding he would be allowed to leave should the club receive a suitable offer. Now Slimani has asked to leave after believing that his valuation has been met. And he turned down the offer of a new contract this week, refusing to even attend a meeting. Slimani has also attracted interest from Italy while Sporting turned down a £12.5 million bid from Chinese moneybags Jiangsu Suning in January.

And it will test the resolve of our owners as whilst now ( in comparison to what we have seen in the past) the contracts we offer are fairly large, they are not in comparison to some we have seen being handed out...
