New £25m bid for Silva is expected in January

Leicester City have promised to return for Portugal international and Sporting Lisbon captain Adrien Silva in the January transfer window, according to new reports.

The respected Diario de Noticias is reporting that Sporting, who vetoed a deal on transfer deadline day last week, may be prepared to do a deal in the new year.

City apparently offered more than £20million (25m euros) plus £4m (5m euros) in add-ons last week, but the Lisbon club were unwilling to accept anything less than the total £37.5m (45m euros) to buy out the 27-year-old's contract.

There was also a complication with the deal last week because Sporting only own 80 per cent of the midfielder's contract, with the remaining 20 per cent owned by an outside funding body.

It is feared, say the Portuguese media outlet, that this arrangement may also be a problem should the transfer talks resume for a possible January bid.

City boss Claudio Ranieri is known to be keen on Silva, who was part of Portugal's Euro 2016-winning squad, and the player himself is keen on the move.

In fact, in the days before transfer deadline day he was widely quoted confirming a move to the King Power Stadium saying: "After the past 15 years at Sporting, this opportunity is something exceptional for me and can allow me to express and impose myself in another championship, and also to evolve in the Premier League, which is a stunning league."

It is believed that Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho blocked the move with deals going through in August for both the club's star striker Islam Slimani, who of course moved to City in a £30m deal, and Joao Mario to Inter Milan, losing his captain would have been a step too far.

However, Sporting did re-sign a central midfielder, Elias from Corinthians, just before the window closed and that may ease any possible Silva deal in January.

If Silva was to move to City, it is reported that he would quadruple his wages to more than €4m (£3.4m) a year.

Leicester, of course, have a history of going back in following transfer windows for players, as deals for Ahmed Musa, Papy Mendy and Islam Slimani have all shown. All had been targeted by City in previous windows.

lol who's promised who? I see no official quotes.

It's the Mercury, that's standard procedure to lure you with a tasty headline, only to let you down with the article itself.

Does any transfer have official lcfc quotes before it's  concluded. It's  not stopped all the other ones being written about.

Have lcfc even said we tried to sign him in the last window?

Even though there is no official quotes I think this will happen. The only reason why this didn't happen is because Sporting didn't have enough time to bring in a like for like replacement. Therefore they signed some young lad with a lot of promise. They hope that in 6 months time he shoulder of gained enough experience of the league & should be ready to step up into Adrien's role.

Fingers crossed!

The only reason we did not get him was we moved to late that left them asking stupid money. He wants out and wants to come to us. They know that and now have till jan to sort it. He has a verbal agreement to leave. Had we moved 2 weeks earlier he would be here now.
