Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Being no expert on these matters I'd like to throw the question out there regarding the players mentality , I've wondered recently about how players who have achieved such greatness as they did last season motivate themselves to start all over again, probably already thinking they will never achieve that level of success again, this is not a criticism of the players but a realistic view that last season was a one off. Once the pinnacle has been reached where do you go?
ousefox Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 I think the players and claudio know it's a tough ask to do it again. We may only get one shot at the champions league so it's no surprise we're going for that.

The intensity and the buzz of last season was incredible and all consuming, knowing it's unlikely to be matched will take some time to get over.
adejo92 Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 I do not for one minute think we will be embroiled into a relegation battle, however, it is very noticeble that last years stars have not carried on their form and there is a distinctive lack of effort across the team itself. I have noticed the lack of effort over a few games so far but nothing as obvious as against Southampton. Half hearted suicide balls and the long ball which is more suited to league one. Still, i would happily settle for being a mid table steady prem team.
foxy boxing Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 it was always going to be a tough ask to repeat last season but I at least would expect the team to be competitive in every game and to use last seasons exploits to motivate the team to do well, the players should strive to do well consistently in what is a very short career but can be memorable forever
lgfualol Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 There is no motivation for all the PL winners to perform in the Prem. That's gonna be a problem. I'd say for this reason we should drop those looking lazy in the Prem and give Gray, Kapustka, Musa, Okazaki, Slimani and Hernandez a go together because at least they will look and should be fired up to play in the premier league.
Countryfox Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Old Tinkerboy needs to do some tinkering ... in the meantime the Champions League is the new Prem title .... I'm happy with that and mid table mediocrity. (FA cup would be nice too ... ).

Also another reason why we look more like the team of old in the Champions League and have two decent performances and excellent results. They've got something to get up for. It's a shame really I hope we can do something to remedy it as I believe the team we have could easily get itself into a consistent top eight challenging for a euro spot sort of position year on year. Problem is if we end up in a position like Southampton we will more than likely lose our better players year on year like Southampton.
davieG Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Motivation More games = tired players Rotation = adaption time needed Champions League distraction External business and media distractions, especially Vardy Adapting to new players Opposition playing deeper and harder marking of Mahrez Other teams have improved their squads We've not improved/developed our defence or midfield All in their own way have contributed
Beliall Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 I had a thought yesterday afternoon, that sport science might have something to do with our form. We went 100% for a full season, This time we have a lot more games, Do you think that they have been told to give it less effort overall, in order to extend the overall fitness period?
Fox92 Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Can't do it again. Certain players are ''average" who were at the top of their game and that won't happen again. I look at Drinkwater, class player, and he's looked class this season so far again.
weller54 Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Last season was mental... We over achieved beyond our wildest dreams. This season was always going to be a matter of 'after the Lord Mayor's show '.. We are back to where we probably should have been last season, hopefully we'll get enough points from our home games to be safe but winning points away from home is going to be tough! Last season seems like a wonderful kind of dream now...
Guest seanfox778 Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 It's a bit like a sequel to a good movie, we want this to be our Terminator 2: Judgement Day but it could possibly end up being Speed 2: Cruise Control. The highs of last seasons league performances will hopefully transfer to the Champions League.
Gerard Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Alex Ferguson said he'd closely monitor players when they'd just won the league. If he thought any of them were content with that he got rid of them, he only wanted the ones who were hungry for more success.

Obviously we did not expect to be playing poorly in the league, but when you look at our bench yesterday and the bench of the top 7/8 usual teams then there is a big difference. Maybe it will change when Mendy is back and Ranieri starts playing Musa and Kapustka more.

Wise old bird old Red Nose ... but you'd have to be careful you have some players left.
Dan Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 If we can't mentally get up for league games then we are absolutely in a relegation battle.
Webbo Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 I'm beginning to wonder if we wouldn't have been better off allowing Vardy and Mahrez and who ever else wanted to leave to go and the rebuild the team again. Obviously with the champions league and the risk of relegation that's not a practical idea, but long term it might have been in our interest.

And when we win the Champions League I'm going to remind you of that.

Totally agree Babs however we must (fans and more importantly players) start getting out of this malaise and start putting the effort in again you can never stand still in life and at the moment that's exactly what we are doing
MPH Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Looks like the players themselves realize we wont win the league again ( already lost as many games as we did the whole of last season!) but they definitely look up for it in the champions league....

HighPeakFox Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Nice to read some sanity. Last season was a perfect storm of circumstances, never to be repeated I think. I'm just grateful it was us and we have it forever as an unforgettable memory.
Poznan34 Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 I can see it completely. When we've had bad results recently I've been apathetic to it because of how good last season was. If the fans are feeling like that, to some extent it will translate to the players/coaches etc.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 The players have nothing left to prove in the PL, they do in the CL. It was always going to be like this.
