Ric Flair Posted 30 January 2017 Posted 30 January 2017 Let's stop fannying about peppering bids in all over Europe for defenders who won't be allowed to come and go for a proven PL defender who is ALLOWED to leave. Yes, he's nearly as old as Huth and Morgan but he can play football and gives us a significant threat at set pieces. We seriously are scraping the barrel for goals this season and 2-3 goals from Ivanovic could be the difference between staying up or going down. I'd have gone all out for Sakho but it's evident we don't rate him so now let's stop wasting time and trying to sign players who are wanted by their clubs and look at what's available. This window is horrible to operate in and usually the only way to get players is to go for ones that are surplus to requirements, for us that means we need to target big clubs for their fringe players. Going after Anderlecht's regular centre half with less than 2 days to go is just stupid. We do this every fcukin window and seldom get anywhere. We were lucky with Slimani as we were prepared to pay a fortune for him that Sporting were tempted with but I don't see us doing that with defenders where we don't deem them as important. We penny pinch at the back. Just get him in you clowns.

I think it is better if we go in with a 8m bid for an unproven, average CB from abroad who will be used as competition for Simpson.

He is the same age as high and morgan he shouldn't have looked so poor last year at 31 - if we have done our homework on why he did then maybe but it was notable that Chelsea rarely play him at centre half, even when they had injury/form issues there. You dont get get a guy in like this to cover right back so you either play him CB or RB. How much of an improvement is he on Huth and does he have the pace of Simpson to cover behind.
AjcW Posted 30 January 2017 Posted 30 January 2017 As much as i've always liked Ivanovic, Chelsea are currently playing an attacking wing back at CB and have recalled a lad doing well out on loan just to sit on the bench to avoid having to pick Ivanovic..... I mean it's not exactly a ringing endorsement from a manager so famed for his defensive success.

He's 32, aren't Huth and Morgan both 33? Anyway, he's also about 3 times the player either of those have ever been. I'd have him start over Simpson any day of the week, at right back for Chelsea he's always provided assists without being THAT much of an attacking full back. If we could get Ivanovic and Sakho then I'd be very happy but we won't. We'll piss about going for unproven defenders from Europe who their clubs don't want to let go and then Ranieri will boldly claim he's happy with the squad. If we do struggle like I believe we will then I hope we move very quickly afterwards for Cacares whose now back from a long term injury. I'm sure some fans will turn their nose up due to his injuries but I'd rather we got him in than nobody.

Stoke letting Huth go quite easily could have been enough to put us off and for 18 months he's been a class act for us. That sadly is now diminishing quickly. Ivanovic in terms of ability has always been head and shoulders above any defender we've got. As a short term purchase as opposed to us probably getting nobody, it's a no brainer.

We are wasting time increasing bids by a million rather than focusing on players who are AVAILABLE. That's why I believe we won't sign anyone.

TBH, if that's true I would rather we try and get our targets over the line than buy players we haven't identified as targets because they 'are available' If we can't get those targets then we have to make do with what we have

Max Power Posted 30 January 2017 Posted 30 January 2017 Jesus Huth moves bad for someone who is 32. Looked about 52 on Friday night.

He was one of the best defender in the Prem 2 seasons ago so just seems strange how quickly that has changed.

You're a very brave man then given we're still in 2 cup competitions and our only genuine defensive cover is a 36 year old lunatic. It has simply got to the point where we are going to have to just sign someone for the sake of it, why they let Hernandez go without any replacement is baffling.
