He was exposed because we had no proper DM to cover him, just like wes and huth vs united (A), being that open to direct attacks can throw you off your game and you end up losing concentration and forgetting someone on a corner (again, just like our defense vs united), nothing to see here, move on.

This guy has played a total of 12 games in 2 years.

 

To come in tonight and put in a MOTM performance against one of the best sides in Europe, was truly incredible. 

 

After the stinker he had against Everton, I had big doubts how he would do tonight but I couldn't have been more wrong. 

 

Looking back at his career, he has only played 196 professional games, and he is 30. Not sure where that performance came from tonight but if he can reproduce that on a regular level, then he should be starting for us next season. 

 

He reads the game better than any of our other CBs and is bit quicker too. Obviously he still has to prove himself over a longer period and we need to see if Everton was a hiccup or not, but the signs are very promising and I love his attitude. He was completely cast aside here but never complained or tried to force a way out and always looked genuinely delighted on the sidelines when we were winning and with his social media postings etc.

 

I thought we would need 2 CB's in the summer, but with Wes and Huth still having some life left in them and Benny looking a very good choice there, then probably only need the one now. Maguire perhaps.

What he does quite well, at least in my eyes, is distribute the ball from the back. He's calm and doesn't seem to panic when pressed, which buys our midfield a second and keeps the ball on the pitch.

Benalouane needs to be given a hell of a lot of credit in the past games he's played. I was really worried at the time Morgan got injured, but have we missed him since? Not really. I had my doubts about him, but I'm happy to see him prove me wrong, and then some. He's been terrific for us and that performance against Madrid was outstanding. 

 

He has gained a lot of respect from me and I hope it continues. The question will be, what will happen when Huth and Morgan are fit together again? It'll be so harsh to drop a guy that's helped us to successive clean sheets and put in a MoM performance against one of the heavy weights in European football.

Respectful got us in the relegation scrap, should have gone in November.

We'll see. Lots of enthusiastic over-reaction because none of us have seen enough of Benny to really be able to judge him.  

 

What I've seen has been mixed. Definitely man of the match in our first leg against Atletico.

 

Rolled over by Lukako at Everton but so are a lot of centre-backs because the guy is unusually difficult to contain.

 

But bullied too by Benteke at the Palace and this is what concerns me most. He's tough enough, I'm sure, in a general sense but he doesn't have the kind of physical presence Huth and Morgan have to contain the biggest, strongest and best strikers.

 

Huth and Morgan are masters when it comes to baulking opponents. They stand their ground and become immoveable.

 

Benny gets trampled over and it's a major problem for all that he's undoubtedly our best footballing centre-back - and the most mobile.

 

Depends who Benny's up against as to how he's likely to cope but I don't see the powerfully calm authority that would categorise my own choice for the job.
