Munshi Posted 19 April 2017 Posted 19 April 2017 He has got to be one of the most consistent defenders we've ever had. Definitely the most underrated.
Guest Col city fan Posted 19 April 2017 Posted 19 April 2017 There's been an awful lot of this and that player was 'brilliant' last night. Most werent. Simpson was....... I'm struggling to think of many players who have developed so much since joining City. To compare him to the player that first joined us....worlds apart...

Yes it's clear that the penny dropped at some point last season and he knuckled down to improve himself. He's now twice the player we signed. It's just a pity he's not a little taller.
lgfualol Posted 19 April 2017 Posted 19 April 2017 And to think I thought 2 million was quite a lot for him back in t' day.
kingfox Posted 19 April 2017 Posted 19 April 2017 Forget England's number nine, we have England's number two.
Brainy Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 Posted a picture on instagram of him on holiday with the caption "when you meet your old team mate N Golo Kante".. of course it isn't Kante but just a guy whose only similarity is skin colour...
Thracian Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 He's the sort you think about replacing then realise you're asking for trouble. In our team he's gold dust. I've seen us play with a wing-back and we're vulnerable. Simpson's so good at jockeying he should have been riding in The Derby and that buys us the time to defend in numbers as opposed to being exposed. I don't say he was born on his feet but wonder if he goes to ground even on the beach. Solid as a lampost he is and so rarely out-muscled even in the thick of things. McCavity Mahrez should give him half his wages for the times he makes up for his losing the ball in no-man's land with not a chance of recovering. Simpson's a 7/7.5 player week-in, week-out and I'm glad he's getting some appreciation.
sylofox Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 The reason he's not appreciated by many it has nothing to do with his football. People thought he was a cvnt before he even played for us. All the stuff about his ex is what people are judging him on.

I personally dont think its this anymore, @Thracian 's comments above pretty much sums it up and how he is more constantly solid than sporadically spectacular.
Tielemans63 Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 I really like Danny Simpson as a player but if I had one criticism of him it would be that sometimes his positioning is a bit lazy. Sometimes he stands miles off his man and relies on his athleticism to recover the situation. He could be a bit tighter to his man imho as he doesn't bomb forward to much and could perhaps stop attacks higher up the pitch. I realise that this is me being extremely picky
Jonezy Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 He is solid, but he still let a lot of crosses in from his side (see Sevilla and Atletico headed goals) and his passing is extremely wayward at times. But he gives his all and very rarely stands out as the weak link.
Finnegan Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 Meh, everyone likes to complain about Mahrez letting Simpson down but it's a two way street. Simpson let's Mahrez down just as much. One of the reasons Mahrez is constantly got two or three people able to pick him up is that Simpson offers zero support when we're in possession. We can count his overlapping runs on one hand and when he does get the ball he just expects to be able to pass it straight back to Riyad. Not exactly ideal is it.
Tuna Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 Looks like a remarkable bit of business considering where we got him from, how much he cost and his overall contribution.
dynamark Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 I'm not sure Ive seen a better defender in back post situations. As a defender you have to decide am I going really tight or give myself some options .Simpson generally stays on the inside and covers the inner area close to his centre back but very rarely goes to ground .Proper full back

Traditional full-backs are at their best when restricting the space a winger can run/dribble into, and forcing them wide rather than letting them get past them and cut inside. One reason we were so successful in our title winning season was that our full backs forced opposition wingers wide, meaning all they could do was cross it in. Huth and Morgan could then gobble those high balls in all day long. Simpson is excellent at doing just that.

I did say I was being picky though!

BenTheFox Posted 4 June 2017 Posted 4 June 2017 The biggest compliment I can give to the guy is that I can pretty much go through a whole game without noticing him. A very consistent performer for us and we're noticeably worse when he's not playing.

I said he should of gone with England last summer, crazy when you think how many English players won the league last year and how little representation we had. I dont think Simo would make first team purely because we play with WB rather than FB but think he is good enough to be in the squad especially games you'd expect us to be more defensive.

I did say I was being picky though! Tbf to him though when you are giving little support he gets outnumbered, opposition know this and expose it. You can't expect him to move quicker than the ball and close every player. He restricts the space to put a good cross in and can normally be dealt with by Morgan/Huth.
