A shame shakespeare never gave him a chance in preseason. Coming back off of a successful England tournement and a brilliant loan spell, confidence wouldn't be higher. Would have been the best time to give him a chance to intergrate in the team. Instead he was sent out on loan to a club around the relegation zone, started well then dropped off when the team did resulting in a loss of confidence that hasn't come back since (Going by the cup games and what I have seen of U23 games since he has been back).

I think Puel has done the right thing so far, bought him back away from a club which would probably put too much pressure on him as a young attacking winger, gave him a chance in the cup and when his form didn't improve has put him in the U23 to find his form out of the spotlight. Even if he isn't involved at all towards the end of the season im sure Puel will give him a good chance of making a claim in preseason along with some of the young defenders. Just hope we can give a platform to some of our young U23 players who have done well this year if they deserve it.

I've moved this from the Southampton thread. It's not really about Southampton and I don't know why we bother with a thread worrying what Soton fans think anyway!

I absolutely agree with your post and believe it to be a big problem and a situation that we absolutely as a club fell into the trap of.

There are two standout players in the world in Messi and Ronaldo. Then the next tier of players like Suarez, DeBruyne, Neymar and  Aguero etc with a slightly lesser 3rd undertier. We have to accept that with the best will in the world, even if we had the money,  we're never going to attract this calibre of player.

The problem with the commercialism and utter hype in football these days with the flames of the fire being fanned by agents, players like Slimani and Silva for example, with no sell on value, who even at their age have had no history of a big club willing to take a risk on, are purchased by ambitious clubs like our for extortionate sums like 30m! Being honest and with hindsight,  neither are remotely worth that, we fell for the old Emperor's new clothes trick. The inferior smaller  leagues of Russia and Portugal are seemingly poor buying markets where it would appear easy to be seduced into buying a big fish from a little pond only to find that they can't adapt to the deeper and faster flow of our game.

Though French football is not currently in the pomp it used to be,  nevertheless we've found their bigger more bloated market a happier hunting ground even at a lower level e.g. Marhez and more recently even Diabate. At those prices you can afford to take more of a risk and mistakes can be moved on with much less of an overall financial impact. There also have to be more Vardys about out there but our markets are a bit more expensive in fairness. Southampton have consistently over a fair period of time shown that if ran efficiently, academies can be effective though young players do need to be given a chance by a brave manager with  club and supporters on his back.

This summer is a huge watershed for us I believe. We need to get rid of a number of our expensive overpriced players that bloat our squad with mediocrity. How many number 9s have we potentially got on our books yet no real number 10? Let's hope that lessons have been learned from this 'kid in a sweet shop with his pocket money' attitude we've adopted in recent times. Maguire and Diabate are great models to follow. It really isn't that long since we taught the whole footballing world a big lesson,  it's about assembing all the essential  parts of a team, not collecting the exotic individual, our winning team cost less than one Slimani! Ostriches need to pull their heads out of the sand and stop following the crowd, we of all clubs have proved that difference can pay dividends.

We could occasionally find a few rough diamonds - Vardy, Ndidi, Maguire and perhaps Diabate - before they're fully developed into the kind of players that the European superclubs want. And I hope our investment into our scouting is as good as before. But I'm more excited about our emphasis on youth development. It's worth noting in the past few years we've started to churn out Premier League players, Chilwell, King, Schlupp and hopefully even Barnes. And we seem to be funneling more money into youth development. If we continue to improve we won't have to worry about superclubs stealing our pickings or agents over-hyping players.

Sam Hughes scored yet again. 10 goals now from centre back. The kid is incredible. Puel needs to give him a chance along with a few others.

Needs to improve his ‘hoofing’ first, then he will get his chance.

I hope Hughes AND another of our young CBs are brought into the squad to replace Huth and Morgan next season to back up Maguire and Dragovic. CB is really a position of strength in our club.

Can see us giving Huth another year or two purely on sentiment.

He hasn't even sniffed the bench this season, his contract is finished. He'll be gone.

Shame is that he was the biggest single reason for our survival and league win but he never got the type of payout that 90% of the team did.

Fantastic player whom I can only guess has tailed off terribly this season or never really recovered from his pre-season injury.
