If he spits his dummy out and starts playing consistently crap like last season then hopefully Shakey does the right thing and drops him to the reserves for a few weeks, thus opening the door to a 3-5-2. If that succeeds Mahrez will be depending on Shakey changing his tactical setup to accommodate Riyad. Probably what Mahrez needs if that happens because theoretically he'll know that he must play out of his skin every week to just stay in the team.

Not sure whether the medical can be done after the deadline though. I seem to remember something about only certain paperwork needing to be in before the deadline, while other minor details and registration can happen later.

You can sign a player based upon a later medical as long as the paperwork is done in time.
