Unpopular Opinions You Hold

With regards your "ing er land" mentality I think it shows just how tribal we still are. As football fans of a particular team I think we exemplify that more than many. I hate the agressive tribal mentality that links to hatred and fighting but I love the communal tribal mentality that brings people together.

I've always believed that the only way man will overcome all his prejudices towards each other is for an alien race to be discovered who we will unite against. Sad.

What I hate about the Ashes at the moment is not the tribal mentality but the commercialisation aspect and bigging up the rivalry simply for viewing figures.

Or some other kind of global disaster, yeah.

Though present evidence seems to show that when such a disaster is on the horizon mankind would rather fight over what's left afterwards than actually unite to deal with it properly.

On the theme of overhyped events, Lions tours in Rugby Union are massively overhyped.

Yes, the series against NZ in 2017 was good and its a badge of honour for the players but its a glorified exhibition. Maybe they were a big deal in the 1920s or what but times have changed.

Mate you're just still salty because we won in Aus when BOD got dropped for Foxy.

I see two differences between the Lions and the Ashes.

1. "Tour" culture is a little different to Test culture. Although you do get a cap for representing the Lions, you're right in that it's still exhibition culture to an extent but invitational teams have been part of the spirit of rugby for a long time, see the Baa Baas, Pacific Islands, etc.

Nobody considers the Lions to be the pinnacle of the sport, everyone would much rather a world cup win while most people in the CWC thread said they'd prefer to win the ashes.

2. That said, the Lions is still the very best of British vs. Southern Hemisphere teams that have historically been stronger than us generally for a long time, plus coming together as an invitational team and playing away is a handycap in itself. It'll always be special except maybe next time we play Australia if they continue to decline. That leads me in to cricket...

In the 90s, the gulf between England and Australia was massive, the Aussies were about the best in the world, England were always under dogs and Australia did always represent the biggest challenge. In lieu of a test world cup, the Ashes was the thing.

Given Australia have gotten a lot worse since then, the gloss has been taken off it. Winning a series in India would be a lot more significant than winning the Ashes at home right now and that's why it seems over hyped.

Regarding the Ashes, what I dislike about it is the way it stirs up nationalism in people who have no interest in cricket. Fair enough if you follow the sport but to jump on the bandwagon and make out like it’s somehow relevant to you is downright weird. I remember many years ago when Torvill and Deane were winning shit in ice skating - suddenly everyone was an ice skating fan, staying up late to watch it, and acting like it mattered to them. It’s just all too much of an ‘Ing-ger-land’ mentality for my liking.

I think it's slightly unfair to suggest that happens. I don't wish to politicise a sport I love, but I think, as you find during major tournaments involving the England football team (though sadly often not away from them), that it's more of a unifying force than a malevolent one. People of all creeds and colours backing a team of all creeds and colours against an "old enemy" who are more panto villains than genuinely hated. Perhaps you could describe it as civic national pride, rather than ethnic national pride (if that's what you were referring to - sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick).

You have reached the maximum number of posts you can make per day.

I'm not being funny but cricket needs all the publicity it can get, especially with it being behind a paywall and this series coinciding with the start of the football season. It needs as many viewers willing to watch it in this country as it can muster.

A certain percentage (5%) of the wealth a millionaire has should be distributed to those that need financial support - allowing the UK government to stop spending less of its own money to help those in difficult times.

The benefits system that government has introduced has been used illegally many times by those who had found a hole in the systems for years now.

Sorry to disappoint you but got over BOD being dropped years ago.

Not saying Lions tours are crap as such, just saying they are overhyped. Also, too many warm up games against crap opposition, eg, likes of Bay of Plenty and Southern Kings.

Fair point but most high net worth individuals are probably non British and would simply move their wealth elsewhere. Thats the harsh (and unfair) reality of it.

Edit - sorry reread and edited accordingly.

If I was a self made millionaire I'd be annoyed if this was mandatory. Charity and giving is choice. I have donated to charities but it's my choice to do that.

To charity?

£30 (via direct debit); which goes to LOROS, a very well-regarded organisation helping people diagnosed with various conditions.

A couple of things on the Ashes, the Australia team have been the best in the world for large periods of the games history, so in the absence of a World Cup this series almost became the World Cup and the pinochle of the sport.

The Australian Cricket team for many years has also been the absolute lowest of the low in terms of sportsmanship, think under arm bowling, over the top sledging, getting personal and sandpaper. So beating these guys is always a win for sport.

Finally, cricket is declining in popularity and needs the Ashes media attention to become relevant and this is way better than the 20twenty or 100 crap they are banding around to appeal to new supporters.

Paying over the odds to advertise for billion-dollar multinationals or boutique luxury designers and it still looks sh*t. No thanks.
