Commentators calling Forest 'one of the great English clubs' in the first half- I don't know about that, they're a middling club who profited from Cloughie's magic. Same as Derby really, neither has really done much outside of his tenures.

not doing too badly for a club like that then that hasn't been in the Premier League for over 20 years

I see clubs like Forest and Derby as traditional clubs. And Derby were obviously a founding member too.

 

But most clubs (aside from the proper big clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United) had a little spell of dominance somewhere in their history - Preston, Blackburn, Huddersfield etc were all the best side in the Country at some point. 

 

So if think the commentator means 'great' as in historic/traditional, not 'great' as in big, then I'd agree.
