I'm amazed how may people are writing him off, you only have to look at the rest of the England U21 team and none of them are established first team players for their clubs.

For me he has all the tools to get to any level he wants. He's quick and a good athlete and is comfortable on the ball and attacking which is essential nowadays for a top class full back. He's not the best defensively but that should come with time and more experience at PL level. It's well within his capabilities to play for an elite level side and be an England regular. If we're writing the likes of Chilwell off then we may as well not bother with the rest of the development squad as he's a far superior player to any of them.

We've seem him gallop down the pitch past 5 players! the only thing is he isn't great at reading the game, that comes with experience, he has the physical attributes to become a good defender, just needs time and patience from us.

OH and about his age, he's 21! he's got atleast 12 more seasons in him ffs, did mahrez play in the prem at the same age? schmeichel? morgan? etc... leave It out.

A top quality player would be making an impression consistently at 21 in the majority of cases.

He'll have a Nugent like career, bouncing between the top flight and the second. Not good enough when facing a player running at him, too often he's turned or the winger breezes past him. He looks dynamic because he runs with the ball well but it's a misconception he's good going forwards as his crossing is poor and his passing is basic. Potentially he could be a decent player as he has some raw attributes but he needs to play under an elite manager which isn't going to happen.

0 Assists in 29.37 90s (Chilwell's whole career to date), Aaron Cresswell, admittedly a much more experienced but comparable player has 5 assists this season alone.

I think he'll be in the Championship in a few years. Extremely poor player who, such as the likes of Schlupp and Mattock, has made it young because he's fairly quick and physically strong. He has no footballing ability whatsoever and makes a lot of defensive errors.

I don't think I've ever seen him complete a forward pass and if he had that terrible blonde hair we'd be comparing him to McGivern.

He'll sign for someone like Arsenal and dip in and out of the first team only to go to a (insert newly promoted team) within a couple of seasons.

“Despite showing already he’s a capable PL left back”.

What precisely has he shown he’s capable of?

Being very poor?

Seriously though in the last 12 months he has been awful. This is is what we have consistently witnessed; he can’t defend, nor pass the ball, he’s easily dispossed and hardly wins a tackle. Whilst he has shown he can go forwards with the ball at time, his end product is atrocious.

The ‘young’ tag doesn’t wash either, at 21 he should be better than he is now, even to be playing at Championship level.

Just because Fuch’s legs have gone, it does not make Ben meet the quality we require.

Conclusion: we need a new left back in the summer.

I think he’s shown he’s capable because he hasn’t looked out of his depth at this level for someone who, as I mentioned before, is in his first season of regular first team football at PL level. Anyone who says he has looked out of his depth and incapable clearly hasn’t been watching him because he’s more than held his own. Yes he hasn’t set the world alight and has made mistakes but the potential is there. The young tag is relevant because how many twenty one year old full backs are playing as much as he is in the Premier League? I guess not many. I agree he needs to improve his end product though.

I think we should hold fire on signing another lb because Fuchs still has a year left in him imo and we should wait to see how Chilwell develops but yes we hopefully will be scouting some very good ones now regardless.

It’s all a matter of opinion and my point about fans being fickle and predicting the next ten to fifteen years of a young player’s career on the back of a few recent months of football is very valid. If anyone wants proof just look this recent thread

No footballing ability is incredibly harsh. He's carries the ball very nicely at times. But beyond that I think there's a fair bit he needs to work on.

Not writing him off at all, but I hoped he'd be a bit better in all honesty.

I don't think he's a defender.

We should stop deploying him in defence and give him licence to attack.

And do what? Run towardsthe corner flag and boot the ball into touch

It's a pity we have four players who can play on the left wing. When we have space and move forwards he looks fantastic. But when we're under the cosh he is a worry.

Yet again tonight he looked like a wide-left midfielder, or at best a wing back, not a full back.

He was very good indeed going forward in possession, combining with other players in attack. He's a good dribbler and has a real turn of acceleration - and boundless energy, it seems.

But his decisions and positioning as a defender look amateurish at times.

Should be start viewing him as a wide midfielder or wing back, not a full back?

I'd say he's already a PL class player (probably lower half PL) in his attacking team play.....but not yet as a defender.

But he's still young!

I feel a bit more optimistic about him than about Gray (for all that Gray can be exciting and penetrative at times).

They both probably need to make a step up within about a year, though...

I have always felt that he would make a really good attacking midfielder. Tons of potential with the lad & he is learning his game at the highest level. Very few players light it up at 21 in the premier league.

He was excellent tonight; a real threat and my MOTM.

Yes he's had some stinkers of late but he showed great potential and was very creative. He's young enough to go either way still and I suspect while he may not be a world beater he will mature into a consistently good Premier League player.

Thought he was awful defensively and runs into blind alleys. Preferred schlupp

He's not the worlds best defender on one sense but he's far from awful. Going forward he's great. Modern fullbacks are not just defenders,

He's not great going forwards, he's alright but nothing special. he catches the eye because he dribbles well but offers little in the way of end product unfortunately. 0 Assists in his career so far and he's spent some time on the wing, his key pass and crossing numbers make grim reading too.

I think he will go a long way, but he probably won't get a cross in at the end of it. lol

The thing is, young players aren't as consistent as mature ones, and Chilwell has had good games for us. He looks a bit versatile for his own good, for me, but he will improve with time.

Carries the ball very well. That run down the left in the first half was Bale-like. Don't think he had a bad game really.

I've seen people on here raving about Musa. Not really any proof of anything. Most of it's the usual overreaction.

Didn't see much of musa, but chillwell given time will be quality don't forget still only young just like grey, both will be pushing for England first team sooner than later, that's my opinion.
