Withdrew his transfer request.

Riyad Mahrez uncertain on Leicester future despite withdrawing transfer request

Riyad Mahrez has refused to commit his future to Leicester but says he has withdrawn the transfer request he made in January.

The winger was the subject of four failed bids from Manchester City in the mid-season window and after a move to the Etihad did not materialise he missed training for over a week, with the Algeria international forced to deny going AWOL.

Mahrez, under contract at the King Power until June 2020, says he is "relaxed" about his situation.

"It has gone. It was in January, it's another transfer window. I am still here - I don't want to put a lot of things in my head," Mahrez told Sky Sports News, when asked whether his transfer request still stood.

He added: "I am still in contract with Leicester so at the moment I am here and we will see."

Mahrez, who first joined the Foxes in 2014, has been frustrated in his efforts to seek a new challenge by the Leicester hierarchy and insists his immediate focus is on helping Claude Puel's side enjoy a strong end to the campaign.

"At that time I handed a transfer [request] because I had offers from Manchester City so obviously I wanted to go. But now I am still at Leicester.

"With me, especially, you never know what is happening. Every time I have to go but I am still here.

"I don't really want to talk about [whether] I am going, or staying. I just want to finish the last three games. We will see what will happen for me."

Mahrez's self-imposed exile earlier in the year saw the 27-year-old miss two fixtures before returning against Pep Guardiola's City in a 5-1 defeat as a substitute on February 10.

He has not scored for Leicester since back-to-back goals against Bournemouth and West Brom in March, while Puel's side have failed to earn a victory from their last four games.

The cynic in me thinks he's said or done this for 2 reasons.

1) I am led to believe if you request a transfer you lose any potential bonus.

2) If he doesn't or can't leave in the summer he'll throw his toys out the pram and request one again - baring in mind alot of people made the point that in January when he put a transfer request in he never 'withdrew' the one from last summer.

3) to show other clubs he’s a good guy at heart who doesn’t try to force moves. We heard City may have been put off by his behaviour.

Hmm i don't really know what to read into all that. In one hand he is saying he has withdrawn his transfer request but then on the other hand, doesn't want to commit to LCFC.

Cynical me thinks the reason he has withdrawn it is too not lose face, on the off chance no one comes in for him in the summer. We all know the moment a 'better/bigger' club makes some noises, the transfer request will be Rudkins desk in a flash.

I'm cynical and worried if he stays and doesnt sign a new contract. He will go on a FREE the following year.

I've no clue about the structure of Mahrez' contract, but this activated my inner cynic.  Fourfourtwo.com on transfer requests:

Agent Barry Silkman’s views on the sanctity of transfer requests are pragmatic. “It’s a waste of time.  Those days have gone, years and years ago, because clubs know when you’re not happy. You go and see the manager, you might go and see the chairman, you tell them you’re not happy and you want to leave for whatever reason. To hand in a transfer request doesn’t put you any closer to leaving – we’ve moved on from those old fashioned days.”

According to PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor, “Sometimes it’s because of the structure of the contract being such that a lump sum is paid to players, providing they’re not asking to leave the club,” he explains. “That’s why so many players often leave it as a very last resort, in order to avoid losing that amount of money.”

So, despite the claims of loyalty to the club, respect for the fans, and forthrightness with the manager, it could be said that the biggest cause of modern footballers’ shyness for transfer requests is the lucrative contractual bonuses they forego by submitting one. In short, a loyalty bonus tends to be spread incrementally over a player’s contract – i.e. 20 per cent each year on a five-year deal.

Withdraws his request until we rebuff bids below our valuation of him in the summer and then puts another one in.

Withdraws his request and retains loyalty bonus more like. Clever if you know a bid is coming in.

He could turn up during the remaining games now, knowing that having excellent performances in the end will come to the attention of interested parties again.

Players should not pass to him.

Think this is about his loyalty bonus more than anything.

Met him at the training ground today, he came across as a decent guy.

Tbh, I didn't even think his transfer request was still active, or whatever the terminology might be. I kind of assumed it was done and forgotten as soon as the window closed.

It genuinely wouldn't surprise me if he is sold in what most would consider a sideways move.

Early sale please. Love Riyad but we need to have enough time to reinvest the money well.

If he goes I think we'll undersell him. I can't see anybody bidding £60mill for him.

Sad because he is a great player and I don't think we'll replace him. Add in our manager situation and I'm not feeling positive at all.
