The masterplan to revive European competition.

1) Make the Champions League a competition that is just for the league champions of every European nation (plus the defending European Champion).

2) Bring back the UEFA Cup, consisting of teams that finish 2nd to 4th in their domestic league, plus the winners of their domestic league cup competition.

3) Bring back the Cup Winners Cup.

The masterplan will make European football more competitive with teams from nations outside of England, Spain, Germany and Italy being able to compete and challenge for the big prizes.

The problem with that plan is, Only one team can win the league in England, Spain, Germany and Italy. A return to the old European cup would mean four of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man City, Man Utd, Juventus, Inter Milan, Bayern and Dortmund would miss out every season. That's not what the bigwigs want. Therefore, it will never happen.

That would effectively make the proposed UEFA Cup about as exciting as the current Champions League as it would contain this season Real, Atletico, Valencia, Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs, Dortmund amongst others. It would completely ruin the prestige of the champions league. Maybe they should just change the name of it so people don’t keep thinking of a competition solely for league champions

I'd prefer a Europa League which has the same number of teams but is just straight two-legged knockout matches the whole way through. Make it something different than a second rate CL.

Bringing back the Cup Winners' Cup would be pretty cool too though.

What an absolute waste of everyone's time. We really are reaching saturation point if this comes in. How much football and competitions do we actually need? The slog of the Europa League is bad enough.

Used to be a decent competition in the past (The UEFA Cup) now as you say it’s a long slog that nobody seems to want, and with the Champions League drop outs in it it’s a very difficult competition to win.

Farcical to make a third tier european competition. Qualifying for Europe should be a major achievement through league standing, not coming 8th or 9th.

More games for Sky and BT to show. Can't wait to watch Motherwell vs SJK Dynamo Spartak Bratislava in Round 1.

Good idea in principle.

But in reality it will be to make the Champions League a closed shop of the top European leagues.

This is the competition for the teams to compensate for that.

Did you read the article?

Europe League becomes a smaller competition. So 6th and 7th of leagues go into this third tier competition.

Meh - if they skim off the top 30 or so team from the Europa League and throw them straight into group stages this could work to improve the prestige of the Europa League - although you're then throwing the dregs like Burnley and Rangers into an unprestigious waste of time tournament - whoon earth is going to watch this competition other than supporters of the participants? Seems overkill tbh.

The tournament is largely aimed at the Balkan countries. A lot of the smaller countries have moaned how much harder it is qualify for the Champions League now as there is only six spots available to the have nots. The UEFA president always needs the support of the smaller countries as their vote at election stage is worth as much as England's or Germany's.

Therefore make a tournament where its easier for smaller countries to have their teams qualify. Get a central TV pool of money which means its propped up by TV rights from the larger countries and there we go, smaller countries happen. Vote for the current UEFA president sorted. It's largely what the Nations League is about - pooling TV rights money and getting distribution across the board.

UEFA Executive Committee approves new club competition

Sunday 2 December 2018

The UEFA Executive Committee has approved the creation of a third UEFA club competition for the 2021–2024 competition cycle at its meeting today in Dublin.

039 - "Inclusive competition means more matches for more clubs and more associations" - UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin

More clubs from more associations will play European football from 2021, after the UEFA Executive Committee approved the creation of a third

UEFA club competition for the 2021-2014 competition cycle at their meeting in Dublin.

• The new competition (which has the working title of UEL2) will mirror the existing UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, and feature 32 teams in a group stage.

• The format will see eight groups of four teams, followed by the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

• An additional knock-out round will be played before the round of 16 between teams ranked second in their groups and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Europa League groups.

• The new competition will feature 141 matches over 15 match weeks, exactly like the UEFA Europa League.

• The winner of the new competition will be entitled to participate in the UEFA Europa League in the following season.

• The new competition matches will be played on Thursdays. As such, the UEFA Champions League continues to be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the UEFA Europa League and the new competition will be played on Thursday with one additional kick-off time slot for a limited number of matches in principle at 16.30 (CET) to be further defined.

• All club competition finals will be played in the same week: Wednesday (new competition), Thursday (UEFA Europa League) and Saturday (UEFA Champions League).

The new third competition will ensure that at least 34 countries will be represented in the group stages of the UEFA club competitions (today, the minimum guaranteed number is 26). All member associations will have access to the three club competitions and all associations will keep

the same overall access quota as currently.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said: "The new UEFA club competition makes UEFA’s club competitions more inclusive than ever before.

There will be more matches for more clubs, with more associations represented in the group stages. This competition was borne out of ongoing dialogue with clubs through the European Club Association.

"There was a widespread demand by all clubs to increase their chances of participating more regularly in European competition. This has been achieved with a strategic approach, and in accordance with UEFA’s objective of having both more quality and more inclusivity in our club competitions."

The UEFA Executive Committee today approved the competition format and the access list for the new competition. An increased minimum financial guarantee for all clubs in the UEFA Europa League and the new competition has also been included. The detailed revenue distribution and solidarity systems and other details, such as the competition name/brand, coefficient system, and commercial strategy will be finalised during 2019.

Also, as part of the 2021-2024 competition cycle, the UEFA Europa League will now be similarly streamlined with the same format, including an additional knock-out round played before the round of 16 between teams ranked second in their groups and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Champions League groups.

No changes will be made to the format and access list of the UEFA Champions League.

This is the Cup Winner's Cup all over again surely?

I think this can be detrimental especially to a club like Leicester because we'd be part of this competition this season if it was running for sure. I love European football, but I mean proper European football. Atletico Madrid, Red Star, Porto, Sevilla and the really big clubs who sadly we didn't get to face in 2016/17. The Europa league is decent enough, but only when you get to the knockout stages.

I suppose in some ways it's a good way to give young players more opportunities but in reality I think this will just add more games that fans aren't interested in.
