UEFA Nations League

Didn't realise one team even from the lowest league qualified for Euro 2020. Bit of a joke.

It's a small price to pay for changing so many completely meaningless, boring games into more interesting, competitive matches. I'm pretty sure we'll see a big difference between the spain and Switzerland matches from an England point of view. The alternative would be to get rid of the friendly games as they have become an anachronism.

ITV guys tried to explain the play-off situation by using Scotland (well they need all the help they can get!!)

Said if Scotland with their section they will go into the play-offs with the other section winners for a place at the Euros.

But they will get a chance to also qualify naturally through the usual qualifying groups which are drawn in December.

With this new easy competition,I thought it meant we need not  bother with friendlies...So why have We seen a host of friendlies, between

European teams...this week gone plus uefa-nations-league...can someone please explain..???

Probably because there's only 3 teams in each mini league so that only one team can play 2 competition games, if you want to fit in 2 like England then one has to be friendly.

Spain as France, played 2 UNL  games in this period. ...So one would I suppose have rotation...

But why did we need to play the friendly with the Swiss, why not sit the midweek game out....

More stupidly,we still chose our 1st choices to start or come on later. Comically Maguire played the 2 full games, top teams

Had their players rested or has subs in one game........

UEFA unbalanced...Southgate and England's policies IMO on friendlies, again totally wrong...A meek showing of using fringe

Or young players, for 70-80 minutes.  Subbing off Welbeck, who needed a full match ,ridiculous!!!

Kane Henderson Maguire etc, should of been sent home for this one...

I wasn't justifying it.

Most of those sub in the Swiss had only played small amount of League

Delph, Rose, Loftus-Cheek (only had about 30 mins of PL) Welbeck are not not first choice so they probably couldn't even do the full 90. Their clubs are using England to get them fit. Not saying that's planned but it's what is happening.

The Premier League's shortage of England-qualified players is a complex issue — unless you manage their club
For those 20 men, it's easy: If an Englishman is better than a foreigner, he gets in your team. The problem is, many just aren't

England v Switzerland: Mirror Football preview in

There's now another reason to despair at an international break being enforced three weeks into a new season.

Thanks to England’s inability to continue their World Cup over-performing act by beating the nation who went to Russia as second favourites, we’re holding the inquest we usually have after they’re dumped out at the quarter-finals.

And a consensus seems to have been reached — that Gareth Southgate will never be able to pick a team capable of breaking down top international sides while Premier League managers keep denying Englishmen the necessary playing time.

Southgate himself brought it up before the 2-1 defeat to Spain, by lamenting that only 30% of the players who started in the last round of Premier League fixtures were English, compared with an average of 33% last season.

In what appeared a clear case of getting your excuses in first, the media-savvy Southgate said he wasn’t lecturing anyone, just highlighting what is a complex, but crucial, issue.

And he’s right.

The issue is riddled with complexities, but viewed from the perspective of a club manager it’s a very simple one: If an English player is better than, or more suited to his system, than a foreigner, he’ll play him.

The problem is, too many aren’t.

It’s fine pointing out that since playing well in flashes at the World Cup, Ruben Loftus-Cheek has completed only 33 Premier League minutes for Chelsea this season.

Loftus-Cheek has made just two brief sub appearances for Chelsea so far this season (Image: AFP/Getty)
But how can new boss Maurizio Sarri be criticised when he sees better midfield options, and his side is unbeaten?

How could you knock Mauricio Pochettino for not giving Danny Rose or Harry Winks enough playing time, when he has an exemplary track record of bringing through young Englishmen and he signed no foreign players in the summer to thwart their chances.

England Under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd says he’s worried about Dominic Solanke not getting enough games under Jurgen Klopp. But last season the striker played in 27 games for Liverpool (albeit nearly always coming off the bench), yet scored only once.

Unlike 19-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold and 21-year-old Joe Gomez, who’ve become Anfield regulars ahead of seasoned internationals, Solanke has simply failed to grab his chance.

But it may come. He’s only 20.

Raheem Sterling is up against world-class opposition for a starting-place at Manchester City, but the competition only seems to have taken him up a level — which is why Pep Guardiola loves him.

There is now talk Marcus Rashford should leave Manchester United to get regular football which will make him the finished product.

But how did that work out for Danny Welbeck?

Do we now blame Unai Emery for rightly believing that Pierre-Emerick Auebameyang and Alexandre Lacazette are better than him?

Since the beginning of last season, Jose Mourinho has played Rashford in 38 games, and he’s still only 20. Why should he drop down a level from United to get more game time to suit England, when that’s the last thing he or his manager wants?

Though still mostly a sub for Man United, Rashford scored in both England games this week (Image: Reuters)

If Rashford backs himself to make it at the club he’s supported all of his life, why don’t we?

In a perfect world, there would be more Englishmen starting games at the top of the Premier League, but modern football is far from perfect.

There are enough examples at those elite clubs to show that if Englishmen are talented enough, and mentally-strong enough, they’ll break into the first team and stay in it.

And if they’re not good enough or strong enough? Well, they probably don’t have what it takes to break down the best international sides anyway.

Weren’t we linked with that Paco Alcacer in the summer, sounds like he’s on fire at the moment

We wanted him on loan but didn't want to pay the fee Barca were asking for .

Bit different to losing against Spain to being beaten and outplayed by Israel I feel .

Embarrassing result for Scotland, summed up with a pathetic own goal winner.

Was coming in here to say the opposite really. I'm not sure why everyone is calling it embarrassing and acting like it's a shock result.

Israel aren't a bad side, it's not the easiest place to go. They're on Scotland's level, I'd imagine most neutral bookmakers outside the UK would have had them down as the favourites, no?

Obviously England, Netherlands or Belgium or someone go there and lose it would be embarrassing but Scotland aren't on that level, they're there with teams like Cyprus, Israel, Georgia, Lithuania, etc. Their nations league placement isn't harsh, it's about right. That's just the standard they're at these days.

Fair play to Israel tbf.

First ever win ?

First ever win in competitive games. They've won a couple of friendlies.

I actually watched the Armenia V Gibraltar game and Gibraltar were incredibly lucky. I think Armenia had about 30-35 shots on goal compared to maybe 6-7 Gibraltar shots. Worth noting the only goal of the game was a Gibraltar penalty
