I've a lot of love for Matty James, when he's actually been on the pitch he's been great, gifted and gives his all. However the injuries have ruined him and even when he does get a run of games it's only a matter of time until something else goes. Have no grudge against his contract the guy got us promoted and was one of our best players in first Prem season but he's not ever going to be a reliable squad member any more.

He'd probably get his contract paid up wouldn't he? Not sure how it works tbh

Yeh thats true. Im not sure either. Cant believe we chose him over King to be in the squad. I liked him before his injuries but hes never going to make it back into our team. King isn't the greatest but hes always fit and gives 100% for the team. I like what Puel is doing but i think he was wrong to leave out king.

I doubt he'll call it a day whilst hes still picking up a nice pay packet from us. While i have sympathy for him for his injuries, he should never have been given a new contract. Absolutely ridiculous!

On reflection the club knew his medical history, surely he can't be on a massive salary? A relative term in football obviously.

I hope the club gave him the new contract as some form of loyalty but on a relatively low salary knowing he'd likely miss many more games.

You'd hope so. I know its not his fault and im sure hes a top bloke and has been working hard to get fit but its more the fact he's got a place in our 25 man squad over King that i find more confusing. Puel and his staff must have thought he was over his injury problems and would be back in the squad otherwise it makes no sense leaving king out.

True, his inclusion in the 25 despite being a long way from anything like match fitness is a little puzzling.

@Gerard will be wanting to give him a contract extension...

;)

We should give one of his better injuries a contract. We could loan him out to medical science.

Wow! Matty James was playing very well for us when he got  his awful injury. To work back from this and suffer more setbacks must be heartbreaking. I'm very pleased that the club are supporting his comeback. I hope that people can support him just like if we were off sick. Come back Matty James

I take it you joined us in May 2015 then....

I don’t think he was impressive in the Premiership either.

This has been done to death, but the nearly ever present midfield pairing of James and Cambiasso were in a side sat at the bottom of the table for months.

The last 7 games saw a major turnaround but before that we couldn’t buy a victory.

Same applies to most of the side which walked the league the season after.

Not sure what Cambiasso has to do with it?

Midfield was fine it is no coincidence we improved and started to win games after we signed the centre half the team was desperately crying out for and bedded him into the team, but you are right this has been done to death.

I can understand some of the admiration for James, in that he was key in getting us promotion to the prem and has gone on to have a few decent performances here and there. Having said that, I do agree with others that the omission of the virtually ever-fit King over the incredibly injury prone James was a mistake - you want your squad players to actually be able to play when called upon!

Don't have anything against James personally but given that he is approaching 30, and in my opinion, has never shown that he is anything more than a very capable championship player (when fit) I think it is time to part ways. I can't really understand why we gave him a new contract, if he plays at all this season I imagine it'll be restricted to just a handful of games and provided that he keeps picking up injuries, even that scenario is rather unlikely. He should be moved on once he is fit again.

yeah but james had nothing to do with the team that won the league.

what were his qualities in the prem? i honestly don't remember him being any good.

I feel so sorry for the bloke. I've seen someone actually celebrating the fact that he's unavailable to play for us. Fair enough if you don't rate him at this level, but he made a very positive contribution the season we won the championship the lad has always shown the right attitude. To be happy that someone who has had a horrendous time with injuries is unable to get on with what is already a short career is nothing short of disgraceful. I hate our fans sometimes.

And King was left out of the 25, even if you aren't his biggest fan he's always fit. James must have spent more time injured than he hasn't at the club.

There's a reason for it, King wouldn't put his foot in anywhere he's likely to get hurt.

Which is a shame because he has a lot of the other requirments.

That’s besides the point, King is actually available for selection, James almost never is.

I didn't say he is 30, I said he is approaching 30 and 27 is certainly 'late twenties'. The point I was getting at still remains, I could understand us wanting to take a chance on him if he was just 21, as he could overcome his injury problems and still have many years to develop. Unfortunately, I can't envisage a late Matty James renaissance where he drastically improves in the coming years and sadly I don't see him even getting to the stage where he can even play a long enough run of games to even have the opportunity to improve.

I think he's made 14 appearances in the prem in the past three seasons?

Obviously the Club have to support him through injury, but the craziest thing was to name him in the current 25 man squad.  This squad will only run up to January, even with his original injury, there was no way he'd return to First Team football before then.  The injury reports said he wouldn't be (medically) fit until the end of September and then he'd have a phased return to training.  He probably wouldn't even start playing with the Development squad until November / December - there's no chance of him making a First Team squad appearance until January (and then there'd be a new squad).  It was ridiculous he took up one of the current 25 - especially at the expense of Andy King.

I don't want to just sh*t on the pile, but he looks to me like a genetically unathletic, sturdy guy who fortunately/unfortunately was very good at football, but his body can't actually cope with the physical demands of it. p.s. I'm not a geneticist.

I'd agree with this - 'unathletic' is harsh as he is athletic in a solid and powerful sort of way and would make a good rugby league player but he hasn't got the sort of lithe frame you need as a footballer - just he also happened to be blessed with great technique and balance

I feel for the bloke but realistically whoever made the business decision to give an injury prone player a 4 year contract needs to be asked a few questions. I'm not saying its going to happen but bad business decisions like this come back to haunt you if things ever go wrong.

At this point Matty James career is over. LCFC won't be offering him an extension after this and with his record there won't be many if any clubs willing to take the risk on such an injury prone player.

He should retire and focus on coaching - maybe give something back to LCFC for securing his financial future.
