Am I going mad?

okay so I know as we head towards the winter solstice we loose light daily. But it seems to me like it’s getting darker earlier than in 2016-2017, at the same time.

At 16:30 now in mid-late November, it’s as dark as it was last year at 16:30 in mid December. I know this (or believe this) as I coach at an after school club, and I’m having to make provisions earlier this year.

another parent said the same thing to me. I’ve tried to google and find out if it’s darker earlier this year, but answers are the usual “it’s getting towards the winter solstice what do you expect.

its not like it’s overcast. Is it just me?

Sorry, as others have said I think its just you. I got married at 4pm at the start of last December so I was checking it against times rather rigidly to see what the likihood of at least commencing in light was (was fine). This year seems very similar.

Maybe because we had a warm summer/autumn it seems like the short days have arrived somewhat abruptly.

Thanks for the replies.. it seems I am indeed going mad and imagining something that didn’t happen ?

My sessions finish at 16:30.. it could possibly be that last year they finished at 16:15.. though as strange as it sounds I can’t remrber what time we finished last year.

The Sun is actually going through a little bit of low activity at the moment - not alot of Sunspots or the like going on, scientists are predicting a cold winter because of it, maybe even an ice age if you take notice of the prepper lot.

Would it effect the time it gets dark? I don't know. Maybe you've just come to the realisation it's fasing into winter now, it was only summer a couple of months ago

I'm loving this one. So the earth has shifted on its axis but no one's realised until today.

Oh and no it was not scientist's or a space agency but a school teacher and his watch. So will this end in massive tidal waves covering the country or a new ice age.

Will this movie be out before Vardy's?

Sunrise and sunset times do change slightly each year, due to each year technically being 365 and a quarter days long.

The times will go in a 4 year cycle that are corrected by a leap year.

EU have taken our afternoon light as part of our glorious leaders Brexit deal.

We can get some of it back (apart from Northern Ireland, obvs) once we hand over £39 billion and promise to abide by all of their demands.

There could be natural explanations.

When the sun sets there is still about 30 mins of twilight which is the light having all sorts of stuff done to it before it gets a chance to reach your eyes. Pollution and dust in the atmosphere are 2 things that could affect it.

The only differences (in relation to the position of the sun) you would find would be if you measured a day just after a leap year and then again  just before the next leap year as the earth doesn't take exactly a year to move around the sun.
