He came on for 7 mins in totals in the 3 games foe Sevilla when they won the Europa Cup three times. He was basically a bench player that covered for injuries or when players were rested. Sevilla had lined up to sell him to Sunderland for £7m the season before when we waded in with our £12m, they couldn't believe their luck to get nearly twice as much for a squad player a few months from his 30th birthday. They then spent half the transfer fee on Ever Banega who is now linked with Arsenal. great business for Sevilla. He has come here and surprise, surprise he's been a bit player for us as well as we're a similar sized club to Sevilla as we fish in the same waters for players. We'll be lucky to get a transfer fee for him. First 3 season he started 25, 24,21, for me in the modern age that's more than a squad filler and a bench warmer, don't worry about all the games he played on the way to the finals, I think you'll find most LCFC fans thought he was a good signing at the time. Comparing us to Sevilla, chalk and cheese we may have money because of the PL, but Sevilla have won the Europa league 5 times and made it to the last 16 of the Champions League 4 times, putting that in too context we have qualified for European football 4 times in our history. Why do you think we have to pay over the odds transfer fees and wages, because we aren't as big deal in European football as 99% of the people think we are on here.

BoyJones Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 Iborra and Silva are technically top players who understand the game. That's not what Puel is looking for. He wants two fighters, spoilers in midfield a la Mendy and Choudhary, neither particularly gifted players but fill the role he is looking for. Physically strong and uncompromising. Plus Ndidi who is having a poor season compared to last year. Tries really hard, but basically another holding, defensive player. That leaves Maddison, who struggles with our negative approach. Iborra and Silva probably thought we wanted to move forward in our football thinking - they thought wrongly.
Vardinio'sCat Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 Nice guy but awful signing, with hindsight. Simply did not have the mobility, stamina and work rate to play in a 2 on a regular basis. I think he may have been useful to us in his mid-20's, or if we had wanted to play 4-1-x-x it might have worked. Beware players in their late 20's (understandably) coming for one last big payday.
La-li-lu-le-lo Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 A master stoke,I mean why the **** would we want any attack minded midfielders?.... this will open the door for the club to bring Drinkwater back, whether Puel wants him or not.

BoyJones Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 The guy is talented as is Silva. Just don't fit into Puel's design. He wants hardworking stoppers in midfield, a la Mendy and Choudhary, much less skilful, no attacking abilities really, but can do a spoiling job. Creativity, apart from Maddison (and he gets drops if he plays too adventurous) is non existent, until we are struggling and players like Albrighton are reluctantly brought on to give a bit of an attacking thread. What's the point of getting 7th place when you con your way there. You will get found out very quickly. Ask Burnley! We need talented players to sustain success, but why would they come to Leicester with the system we play - basically relying on opposition mistakes to progress.
Grebfromgrebland Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 I think we've score some good goals recently

Hopefully we can recoup most of the money and sign a more mobile and positive passer Basically how I feel. I think he's a decent player, different to what we've got and has been quite under-used at times with a lot of our better form in-particularly last season coinciding with him being in the side. But we paid eight figures for him, four year deal, aged 29. That's just poor business. Sevilla the winners in that one and they knew they were. I hold no ill feeling towards him at all but it wasn't a signing that was really going to progress us. Get the impression both him and Silva want to return to their homelands and I wouldn't stand in either's way for the right fee. We need a better central midfielder, someone a bit like what Drinkwater was but I think going back to him would be a mistake personally, an easy one to make but one nontheless. No guarantees at all you're getting the same player back. I wouldn't be totally against a loan though.

That's a ridiculous statement. Late 20s is prime. Iborra just didn't suit our style and isn't naturally quick.

Levante is based in Valencia, which is where Iborra was born, he came through their academy, so it's a distinct possibility. Probably met his wife there, if I had to guess.

People on here will tell you that Evans is a veteran at 30, as well. Which clearly is ridiculous, but I digress, Iborra is not a CB. 28-29 is last big contract time for virtually all CM's imho. I think you are referring to when a player actually peaks in playing terms, which is slightly different. I agree Iborra could have worked if we had played to his strengths. As a trad sitting CDM in a possession based team, I daresay he would still be useful, but we have never really consistently played like that, in the time he has been here.

Guest Chocolate Teapot Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 Way too forward thinking for the system we play anyway. Lets get some more sideways plodders in....

If we're playing three DMs, having two backups seems sensible.
lgfualol Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 Shame if he leaves. One of our only tall midfielders.

May I ask you to either confirm you were joking or commit to not pursuing this particular topical strand further?
tsintskaro Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 Tbh he was only threat after corners and free kicks

Blanchflower78 Posted 3 January 2019 Posted 3 January 2019 Never looked anything more than average. We got excited about the odd pass but think back to his time on pitch and how often was he a top performer. Heart wasn't in it, came for the big English wages which I get. Great move home for him wish him well. Time to invest in some hunger who want to kick on with us.
