I'd say the best starting point would be spirited away, my neighbor totoro and howls moving castle.

For Anime, Princess Mononoke, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Your Name, Sword of the Stranger, A Silent Voice and Paprika are a nice selection of movies from different directors that are quality

For series, well, there are loads of really good anime, Attack on Titan is currently into its third season but FMA Brotherhood is a 60 odd episode series that is well structured and gives you clues right from the start.

It all depends on people's taste.

IMO, there is no such thing as "the greatest movie ever". For me, it's about the rewatch value of a movie. Movies like Snatch, Shoshank redemption, Training day, Good fellas, Catch me if you can...etc are the ones that I think stand at the top of the mountain when it comes to quality + research value.

Apologies to all for steering the thread away a moment but I have to ask.

You guys seem to know a bit about Anime/Manga etc.  I have a question.

I remember as a kid I watched an Anime movie and for the life of me I cant find it, I cant remember the name of the film.

All I remember about it is a child, possibly 2 children, find a giant robot of sorts, I'm sure he was gold. I seem to remember them finding it on a floating island. The robot was covered in greenery as if it had laid dormant for a long time.

That's all I can remember but I must have watched it something like 20-25 years ago. I was quite young.

Any ideas what it could be?

The robot is not gold but most of your description seems to match this.

YES that's it. My memory was very sketchy. Every time it would pop into my mind it would do my head in cause I couldn't remember the name. Knew it was a floating island.

Will have to watch it again. Wow came out in 1986.

Don't know if these are considered the 'best' but they're certainly some of my favourites:

Predator

The Empire Strikes Back

Return Of The Jedi

Ghostbusters

Lost in Translation

Pan's Labyrinth

High Plains Drifter

Aliens

Airplane!

Young Frankenstein

Nothing beats nostalgia, man lol there is an Anime/Cartoons that I watched when i was a kid but I very vaguely remember it so no matter how much I search, I can't find it. It was a weird futuristic Race-based anime that was a bit influenced by Demolition man (a person who is frozen but gets released to race the bad guy).

Anyways, enjoy the movie

Was going to bring this one up myself.

It's not Studio Ghiblis finest movie, but it is my personal favourite.

Yeah, I've loved watching the stuff ever since the late 80s early 90s when CH4 used to be a great channel and would show anime late at night, uncut, that just grabbed my attention.

I kind of dropped out of it during the late 90s but got drawn back in and have seen and collected a fair few movies and series, everything from  Evangelion  and Madoka Magica to Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, SteinsGate and the ultimate mind fookery Serial Experiments Lain.

As for great movies, well, to me anyway, the 13th Warrior.
