WilmslowFox Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 I know this flies in the face of football's tribal qualities, but which PL footballers that have not played for the Foxes do you consider decent? This is not meant as a transfer thread where we name players we would like to sign, so much as pointing out those players whose actions or general demeanour seem worthy of respect. This question was prompted by the lad attending a summer holiday club in south Manchester called "The Wes Brown Football Academy". I'd assumed that Wes Brown had allowed his name to be used in return for some sponsorship money and would have little, if anything, to do with the holiday club. Surprisingly he has been there in person every day throughout the summer, and has nicknamed the lad "Vardy" on account of his various Leicester kits. Wes Brown was never someone I had much time for, but I have a lot of respect for him now.
SemperEadem Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 I really rate it when footballers are open about actually supporting a team. Most I guess are told not to say or genuinely spent their lives playing so not really formed an attachment to any. Players like Billy Sharp for example literally living his boyhood dream.
AKCJ Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Every footballer is a bastard until they wear the royal blue imo
StanSP Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Totti (not PL I know but he's a legend in his own right so have to include him). De Bruyne (his article on The Players Tribune is well worth a read) David Silva (went through a lot of shit with his wife and her pregnancy, very respected individual in the game as it is). Harry Arter & Billy Sharp as well for what they've been through off the pitch. Must be ridiculously difficult to go through what they've been through and still perform at a high level. Andy King (technically he's at another club now so this counts ).
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Won't get much love on here but I actually think Harry Kane is a decent bloke (and a good player though selfish on the pitch). Peter Crouch seems a nice self-deprecating bloke too and Vincent Kompany always seemed a man of principle. Otherwise very few names come to mind, they seem to be mainly self-serving bar stewards!
Kalacs_Orthopedic_Shoe Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 My favourite player outside of Leicester in the premier league is probably Troy Deeney. Loyal, hard working, modest and straight talking; and taking into account chaos theory, set in motion 4 of our most memorable season ever...

MC Prussian Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 I have probably the most respect for players who manage to stick around at the same club for years or even a decade (or longer), maintaining both a high professional and personal integrity level. Hardworking players that keep their head down and don't make headlines for all the wrong reasons. So: Juan Mata Xavi Iniesta Lahm Scholes Riquelme Gaizka Mendieta to name a few.
49er Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 If we include Managers, I would go for Klopp - decent, down-to-earth bloke
spacemunky Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 James Milner - The ultimate lunchpail player. Would play any position if you asked him. Sorta like a LC player I'm a huge fan of named Marc.

Voll Blau Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Prepared to get inordinate amounts of shit for this, but... James McClean.

His life would presumably be immeasurably easier if he compromised his principles but he refuses to do so and the fume he inspires in red-faced poppy worshippers is almost as entertaining as it is embarrassing. Long may it continue. As for current PL players, there aren't a great many that spring to mind that haven't already been mentioned (Sterling, Kante, Mata etc). I quite like a pantomime villain so I've got a weird soft spot for Ashley Barnes' shitehouse antics.
UniFox21 Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Big respect for Danny Rose. He's come out on a few occasions and opened up on his struggles with mental health and pushing that you aren't alone. Especially when his own fans started to turn on him for talking too much.
Fox92 Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Prepared for stick but Grealish. Does good work outside of football. Mane for similar reasons and seems like a nice guy.
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Some interesting shouts in this thread. Can't say I've ever viewed the likes of James McClean and Ashley Barnes as anything other than thugs, TBH, it's interesting people have a soft spot for them.
Vacamion Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Good thread. West Ham's Noble Coady at Wolves I always thought Leighton Baines seemed a decent sort And like many others, Deeney.
Wymsey Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Any of the current Bolton youngsters having to play at senior level due to the state of the club. Especially after the 5-0 at Tranmere, hope they aren't too down in the dumps as it's certainly not their fault they've been forced to play with only three senior players available.
SemperEadem Posted 20 August 2019 Posted 20 August 2019 Not PL but ex club captain at Bochum and fan of the club Felix Batians donated 200,000 euros to the club after he got extra cash for signing a new contract out in China. He never wanted to leave Bochum and was forced out by a previous board.
