Your decade

Has it gone like you’d hoped? Have you enjoyed it? What was belting? What was shite? What do you hope for in the next one?

 

I feel very lucky personally, all sorts of things have happened but us winning the league will always be a crowning moment in my life. Obviously, we’re all Leicester fans (or 99% of us) but it’s hard to imagine anything topping the impossible - I saw a tweet the other week from a journo reminding everyone that us winning the league was the most unlikely even that has  happened in recorded human history according to betting odds. It doesn’t get any better than that 🦊

Being brutally honest...

 

Left a job I hated to do conservation work in America.

Wrote my first film script.

Moved back home.

Moved to New Zealand for 9 months.

Got addicted to gambling.

Moved back home and entered depression central.

Got a job that I have hated ever since.

Wrote another screenplay.

Lost two of my closest family members to cancer and dementia in the space of 6 months.

Moved to Cape Town during the season we won the league and had the ****ing time of my life.

Spent 2 months in Botswana staying with my cousin, driving around Bots and Namibia, having a brilliant time.

Moved back home the day of Brexit.

Was offered my dream job in Cape Town.

Dream job offer in Cape Town was rescinded because of South African immigration laws.

Hit new depressive lows and put on a shit load of weight.

Saw Leicester City beat Sevilla.

Wrote my third screenplay.

Still in the job I can't stand.

Sister met the man of her dreams and married him this year.

Making slow progress in 2019.

Went to Poland to celebrate my sister's wedding.

Went to Ireland to meet up with my Botswana family and meet new family members.

Joined local filmmaking group. 

Making plans for 2020.

 

Plenty of things I'm proud about but still a lot that keeps me depressed, and a lot that I'd change. Focussing on the future tho!

What was belting? After a lifetime of hoping for the best with City but expecting business as usual, winning the PL was off the scale

What was shite? Employer effectively nicked a lot of my pension and I got a medical diagnosis I didn't want

What do you hope for in the next one?  To be doing this again in 2029

wife starting to look more and more like her own mother

golf game go to shite

Started off in the US. 

Changed jobs a few times while there and travelled a lot.

Daughter was born in Baltimore.

Sold our house.

Moved to Lesotho.

Worked for a Dutch company.

Son was born in Cape Town.

Moved to Zambia.

Worked in my best job ever.

Ten year wedding anniversary, took the kids to where we got married in Jamaica. 

Leicester won.

Uncle passed.

Grandad diagnosed with cancer.

Waiting on a final interview for another good job in Zambia.

Coming home for Christmas.

 

It has been a great decade.

Started work overseas (still here) 2011

Travelled and saved in time off

Bought a house 2013

Bought a 911 turbo

Broke 911 turbo

Married 2015

First daughter

Bought a GTR 2016

Passed motorbike test, bought bike

Second daughter 2017

Grandparents died

Sold GTR

Bought C63s

Daughter started school 2019

Third daughter

Fixed 911 (5 years of the road!)

 

Looking to get some family holidays in now and create some memories, but I work ALOT, maybe a bit too much really.

Very decent all in all.

 

Promotions at work

Travelled a fair bit
Moved house a **** load (Clarendon Park, Nottingham, Loughborough, Italy and then Countesthorpe)

Watched the impossible unfold with City, turned 30 and got married all within 5 days.

Travelled around Europe watching us

Started playing football again 

Got massively fat and then got massively fit (healthy not attractive, I’ve always been a catch)

Got a cool nephew and niece.

 

Its been decent, if the next is anything like that I’ll be happy.

Broke my leg.

Went to Chile.

Passed my driving test.

Bought first car.

Went to Thailand.

Got first job.

Got arrested.

Started uni degree.

Got 2nd car.

Got 3rd car.

Met girlfriend.

Graduated uni.

Went to Mexico.

Got flat with girlfriend.

Got sent to prison.

Lost girlfriend.

Freed from prison.

Returned to original job.

Got tennis elbow.

Got 4th car.

Met new girlfriend.

Unsuccessful dream job interview.

Travelled around Europe a lot.

Went to loads of gigs.

Offered new job, turned down due to hours.

Still have tennis elbow.

Opened H2B isa.

Dislocated my shoulder.

Put on 3 stone in weight as an indirect result of dislocated shoulder.

 

Not been great. Still in my same first job, still have tennis elbow. But I'm getting closer to my own home with my girlfriend of 5 years so next decade should have some improvements.

The first decade, the first ten years, were 1-10, with that decade ending at the end of year 10, not the start of it. So it follows the first century (100 years) had passed at the end of year 100 A.D. Therefore the first millennium at the end of the year 1000 A.D., the second at the end of 2000 A.D.

Me from the start of the decade would be fooking chuffed with where I'd ended up

 

If you'd told me in GCSE, where teachers thought i was one of those annoyingly average kids, that I'd go on to graduate with a first class masters from a top 10 uni I'd have assumed there'd been a mix up lol

 

Dealt with a lot of crap along the way; continuous teachers telling me I'd got lucky or I'd get found out eventually and that inner voice telling me I'd fail to name a few. But also had a lot of fun times along the way.

 

Leicester won the league

I've been to a few great countries 

Learnt to drive and got a car 

Met my girlfriend  (whether I class that as a plus, given she's a pain in the ass, we'll seelol

2010 - crap

2011 - don't remember anything about it

2012 - okay

2013 - belter of a year, Watford was the only bad bit but that summer was good

2014 - great until the latter couple of months, another cracking summer actually

2015 - meh

2016 - belter of a year

2017 - wanted to die

2018 - decent, that summer was a goodun too

2019 - has been probably the worst

 

Lots of ambition for the coming years though, time to crack on and make things happen. Hopefully, just for a change, next year people around me manage to not be ill, not die, and not need too much emotional energy from me and I can manage to not self-sabotage and keep letting myself down, and then that can carry on all decade too.

Personally...

2010-2014 Had a hellish time at college, crippled by anxiety, depression and failure. Squeezed through with a couple of a A Levels. Followed by a year unemployed and on benefits while trying to deal with my mental health.

2014-2017 Got a degree, started to get a grip of my mental health.

2017-2019 Got my first full time job, went back to uni to get a masters and now working within a mental health role supporting others who have mental health problems now that I'm on top of my own mental health.

 

Other things,

Lost a grandparent and a very young cousin.

Watched my tiny football club win the bloody premier league.

Had two relationships which both eventually failed.

Ran several 10km races.

Got in decent shape and became good at cooking.

 

I see 2010-2019 as my Claude Puel era of doing the dirty work, 2020-2029 is going to be the BR era where I thrive and get to where my capabilities can get me.

 

Your trajectory very much reminds me of my own. Looking back I see my mid/late-secondary school years as like thrashing about helplessly in a swamp. I'd have been receiving mental health treatment these days, I think, but in the 70s that was only considered for extreme cases & I went under the radar. Late teens & early 20s were like dragging myself out of the swamp onto dry land - leaving home, good friends, studying, dropping out, early crap jobs, independence, adventure, building self-confidence etc.

 

From early/mid-20s to early 40s I had a lot more ups than downs: varied, stimulating, often exciting life, some degree of achievement, good friendships, meaningful relationships, self-respect etc.

 

All the best to you for the 2020s. Every reason to believe that your "BR era" analogy can come true, from what you say.

The last decade has been a ridiculous roller-coaster. Some of the bad stuff was expected (stage of life stuff), some absolutely not.

But it was interspersed with a lot of good stuff & I'm proud to have come out of the other side of it bruised but still sane, defiant and positive about the future.

 

In chronological order:

- Great tour of Benelux, including Ghent & WW1 sites

- French mate committed suicide

- Best friend of 30+ years drank himself to death at 55

- Precious memories of daughter's childhood & family holidays with her

- Fell down stairs, snapped upper arm in half...& was then diagnosed with hereditary heart condition in A&E

- Great weekend reunions with London mates from 80s: beer, football, poker, curry & craic

- Took daughter on holidays to France alone & made several solo tours of Ireland, keeping in touch with cousins

- LCFC Championship title glory

- Marriage gradually descended into acrimony & unhappiness

- Mum died fairly suddenly just as I was about to put her back in touch with her first son, adopted at birth (she didn't know of my plan)

- Met my half-brother (now 64) for the 1st time: a really nice bloke, we've kept in touch 

- 19 months overseeing my Dad's final decline from afar with alternate weekends in London looking after him (also precious memories, in a way)

- Gave up boozing 4.5 years ago (but will probably resume in future)

- LCFC Great Escape & PL Glory (didn't register fully due to everything else)

- Had 5 heart arrhythmias & 1 minor heart op (2nd pending), minimal impact so far....

- Workflow & income plummeted, but necessary & happier working a lot fewer hours 

- Did probate for Dad's estate & sold the parental flat

- Did a lot of writing, photography & compiling of photo albums - creatively satisfying

- Did a lot of stimulating family history research, including repeat trips to Dublin & Belfast

- All but one of my interesting array of uncles/aunts died

- Marriage finally collapsed into bitter divorce & ex-wife tried to rip me off

- Got set up in new rented home near old home & sharing of parenting has gone fairly well, despite residual bitterness with ex

- Done multiple long-distance walks including Hadrian's Wall, Dorset & Devon coast, Andorra

- Daughter has gone from infants' class to teenager with issues, but still a delight & father/daughter relationship good

- Resumed going to cinema regularly & joined a book club to kick my arse into reading, but still lazily missing out on gigs

 

The next decade?

Maintaining the health to stay alive & lead an interesting life is the main thing. Big changes within a couple of years if I do as daughter will soon need me less.

Solo work from home made life isolated in Leicester so I expect to move to south coast (friends/family in south)....hope for foreign travel adventures, a social life, creative stimulation, blah-di-blah.

The future's so bright, I've got to wear shades!
