Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper. Rot in hell.

Nowadays with computerised police systems, 1000's of CCTVs, DNA forensic evidence and mobile phone tracking ... serial killers don't tend to be active too long before they get caught.  The so-called Yorkshire Ripper was active for 5 years.

It's difficult to fully comprend the fear he spread across the North of England from 1975 to 1980, with his sadistic acts of savagery.  13 innocent women were murdered and mutilated.

One of the few occasions when the whole country was truly grateful when he was caught.

We just don't know that. Thousands of people go missing every year - maybe some serial killers are more careful than Sutcliffe.

I remember it well, I was at school the time. It seemed like there was a murder every couple of months. It was frightening.

Fair point.   My phraseology error.   I meant to say that when police get a lead these days, there's usually a much bigger trail to follow.  In Sutcliffe's case, they had very lettle to go on: a vague description, a few tyre tracks a new £5 note.

And a hoax phone call recording which put them on a false trail for while, thinking that the Ripper was from the Sunderland area.

There are times when you are shocked by some people's depravity.

The police were doing their best to catch a deranged serial killer spreading terror amongst a population ... and someone thinks it would be good fun to try and throw them competely off the scent.   How low can you get?

That hoaxer was indirectly responsible for 2 or 3 more deaths, as the police had totally changed tack by that point and were looking for somone with a Sunderland accent.

You can criticise the Police for being taken in, but they genuinely believed there were things in the letters that only the killer would've known.   It was only later that it was shown that most of the information had been in the public domain at some point.   And he may have got lucky by just guessing right about some details.   Anyway, it was most of the most disgusting "tricks" ever played.

They did manage to catch him from DNA 25 or so years later, and he got an 8 year prison sentence in 2006.  He served 4 years.  He died last year.

This one surprised me, mainly because I honestly thought he died years ago

Getting him mixed up with Bob Monkhouse or Bruce Forsyth perhaps?

Graham Cowdrey died last week ( Obituary in weekend paper)

Ray  Clemence today aged 72

Getting too close to home, some of these....

Remember most of Clemence's career. Great keeper, though I did think it absurd when one England manager (Greenwood?) decided to alternate Shilton and Clemence in goal for England.

Used to go to Kent cricket matches during secondary school. Never saw Graham Cowdrey (after my time!) but watched his elder brother Chris starting as a young player and his Dad Colin Cowdrey playing at the tail-end of his career (mid-70s).

Feck it! We're all still young, aren't we? Aren't we?!? :S

Been a shit year in general, but especially for some real football legends going.

Ray did alright though, diagnosed with advanced cancer in 2005. Took 15 years to get him.

That's a hell of a fight.

Too right.

They always said that Shilton and Clemence would've got loads more England appearances, if it hadn't been for each other.   But I thought Joe Corrigan was just as good as both of them, and he would've got masses more than 9 full England caps without those pair.

And even our own Mark Wallington would've had a decent chance of playing for England, if it hadn't been for those other 3 great goalies.

Legend RIP. His son played for us Stephen.

I think “ played for us” is a bit of an exaggeration - didn’t he play about 3 games in 2 years or something crazy as he was never fit ?
