No political discussion in this topic. That is complaining about a country, a politician, a party and/or its voters, etc

Anyone else think that this press conference has massive Prince Andrew vibes? A deeply arrogant man thinking he can chat his way out of a hole only to end up making it worse.

He’s done it before mind - with the enquiry on Vote Leave and there’s going to be a touch pre anticipation about the selected questions

I must be stupid to have considered that it might be choreographed for him to fall on his sword and resign but as the wronged and innocent party who recognises the divisive nature of the present discussion and who is therefore willing to put the good of the country before his own personal interests. Limits further investigations and opens the door for a swift return from his new position as back seat driver.

Irrespective of our political leanings I think we all know, deep down, what the “rules” were.

I think this is going to backfire on Boris big time.  People always make reference to “storm in a teacup” etc and it will blow over.  This is what the government is obviously hoping for.  The thing with the year 2020 is people will remember it and, unfortunately for some, with very bad memories.

But the people listened and 99% (plus probably) obeyed and recognised the sentiment - we are all in this together.

Subsequently to find out that we weren’t all in this together has hit a chord with the British people.  Someone said earlier that people are now responding like they are in support of their football team - there is little measured reflection.

People feel let down.  That is the issue and the price the government will pay is yet to be seen but I would bet the next round of opinion polls will reveal some significant positional change.

Sorry to go off topic in the Cummings thread but some very encouraging news that the uk hospitals death total is the lowest since lockdown,  Monday's numbers are usually low but these are really down.

For all his faults the man knows politics and the man knows PR, surely he must have something up his sleeve?

Depends on his vanity. He wouldn't be the first to overestimate himself.

An unelected official, A man whose entire career has been built on spin, manipulation of the truth and downright lies gives a press conference. In the middle of a pandemic to try and save his job, reputation or some degree of integrity for this government I do not know.

Tory MP’s on Twitter are pretty much copy and pasting the message from central office verbatim.

Is this what we have become?

Part of me worries that if he does go what are we left with? We then have the real Boris Johnson, the puppet without the puppet master.

I don't think the scientists have found much so far to support this. The virus is doing quite nicely for itself in India where there is plenty of sunshine and temperatures well into the 80s and 90s. Also infections in  Australia and New Zealand have been pretty low as they head into autumn and winter.

There must be a chance that what we are seeing now is  a false dawn in Europe as the virus has not been anything other than artificially subdued by basically forcing millions of people to stay inside so agree completely re vaccine etc.

It also appears that the levels of infection in the general population are likely to be between 0.5% and 10% at the maximum from studies so far performed. So those countries who managed the situation well and avoided a high death rate are really not much more likely to see a significant autumn/winter surge than we are.

The virus hasn’t been nearly as contagious in hot countries as elsewhere ...... you would have expected some of these V densely populated cities to have been ‘petri dishes’ for this and yet only Brazil and Mexico seem to have suffered ..... perhaps it’s down to genetics/virus strain combos ......

Don't want to dampen the hope of it re-opening, but if flights for travel (business and holidays) returns and there's been a case of this virus again amongst the travellers anywhere they've been to for it, it really would be a double whammy..

Just bumped into a neighbour who’s daughter works in ICU in one of our hospitals. At their peak they had 60 patients but they have 20 now, encouraging.

And a man who lives in the leafy surroundings of Islington.

Who would have thought it....

To be honest though if you've spent the last 4 years wanking yourself silly over leaving the eu then its fair to say the arch brexiteers will defend him. He's their hero, the poster boy of the leave campaign. Like football fans defending their star player.

To be honest I get the uproar about it. Many have given birth without their husbands by their sides, are they now allowed to do 'what any father would do and be by their wives side? Hospitals currently prohibit this in many cases.

And thats before we even start to go into people losing loved ones.

This is not left vs right despite what is being made out by those who find that debate relevant.

As we do not for certain know if he is telling the truth one way or another, isn’t this just a case of the individual reader believes him or not?
