Ben Chilwell

Recommended Posts

Not on Twitter. What did Chilwell tweet that led to all this speculation of an imminent deal?

If he does go, he is definitely replaceable but it does irk me that we are potentially losing yet another big player this summer. We're effectively becoming a feeder club for Chelsea - for someone who started going to games in the 80s I still find it hard to view them as a big club despite their success over the past 15 years. But I guess they are.

How come we keep losing players like this and a similar club like Wolves don't? Pretty certain if Jiminez or Traoré played for us there'd be a ton more speculation about them leaving than there is now.

..we could win the Champions League and players will still want to walk!!!

We need to understand that the big 4 will always have the kudos with their name. Most players want to test themselves and the money helps as well, we need to have the players with the psyche of being comfortable challenging the best instead of being part of the best. A kind of them versus us mentality.

I understand that players will want to leave but I think it's important that we try everything to keep our best players especially when they are on long contracts. We hold all the cards and ultimately Chilwell can only leave if we let him.

..if Chilwell ask for a move and officially ask for a move then we not only will sell but must release if our price is met!!!

We do not want him to be disturbing the teams efforts to push on, better to have someone who buys into the club's ambition than someone looking to get out.

I am not envisaging Chilwell to kick off, but we do not hold all the cards.

I don't think it's good to create a culture that as soon as a player kicks up a fuss they are allowed to leave. We should make it difficult as we seemed too with Mahrez. It means players will see us as a more long term option than just a stepping stone.

A guy who regularly gets things wrong but once posted a correct lineup said he was leaving and cleared out his locker.

..just imagine a new signing coming to us and finding out that we make potential moves difficult and you have to virtually go on strike to get out!!!

There is only so much that we can do without incurring a stigma of being difficult.

I don't believe Mahrez attitude helped us as the lengths he went to in order to leave, could not have put us in a good light.

Agree.  Think it’s a very fine line and we can’t be seen as a club who stops a players’ wish to move.

Maddison and Chilwell are two of our most influential players. Yes they will command huge fees. But we should not sell unless we are happy with mediocrity. Selling our best players year after year is bad business no matter the fee. It's not how you become successful.

Nothing wrong at all with selling players who we consider to be overvalued. If we don't sell Chilwell then our transfer window may consist of one big buy and that's it.

We're not competing with the elite clubs long term, not on our income and budget. If we're to compete for any length of time we have to use the transfer market well by buying low, selling high and constantly making a profit on players. Selling Drinkwater wasn't a mistake and neither was Maguire as they fetched in £125m. Kante we had no choice in the matter and we got £60m for Mahrez despite making his life difficult for a couple of years. All our other recent business is with squad players.

I think long term we should be trying to compete with the 'elite' clubs. Otherwise what's the point we should be aiming to slowly build so in 10, 20 years we do have the income and the fans and the sponsorship to compete. I think it's a reasonable aim as the club has shown what can be in just 10 years let alone 20 or 30. We should not be aiming for mediocrity.

I think we are doing just that. We are building slowly. We are doing that by getting paid over the odds for players we can replace much cheaper. We're getting a new training ground and stadium expansion. We're producing our own players good enough to get in a team competing at the top end of arguably the best league on the planet. I don't see how aiming for mediocrity comes into question.

It was suggested that we cannot compete with the ‘elite’ clubs long term. I was just suggesting that I feel that’s what we should be aiming to do.

On the other points I feel that up until now it we have done a tremendous job of selling high and buying low and building a base as a top half premier league side. I feel that at some stage we need to take the plunge and stop selling in order to kick on to the next level. I think it’s a good time to do that and would be smart but I’m not expert.

Ultimately I trust top and the board to make the right decision as they very rarely get it wrong.

Ah, right. I think it's possible to compete with the elite clubs, but that it would take a long period of sustained success to get there.

I'm not sure if it's feasible for the club to stop selling at this point in time. For one thing, I think we rely on it to raise the funds we need to reinvest. For another, players sometimes want to move on. There's not much point in forcing them to stay. They're not going to be at their best, they could unsettle the squad, they won't be signing a new contract, so their value will be ever-decreasing, and you run the risk of getting a reputation of being a difficult club that keeps players prisoner. There aren't many clubs in Europe who don't ever sell key players. There's no shame in it. We've been doing it once a year, on our own terms, and it's working well for us.

I agree. I couldn't ask for better owners or a better board. I trust them entirely and I know the club is in the right hands.

I get the impression whenever the club is comfortable with a transfer story hitting the media it goes through Percy. I trust no other sources on the Leicester side of the deal.

I think Tanner's been trusted by the club a bit more too since he's moved to The Athletic. Can't remember any particular examples but that's not the point.

For the record, I only tweeted what I had heard on my FPL account 🤣 obviously didn’t expect it to go so viral. Had quite a few Chelsea sources say similar though, apparently came home from holiday early. But, as with all transfer talk, plenty of things up in the air until a pic in the shirt.

Ah the old “don’t blame me, blame my sources”. Mind you, it’s easy to blame people that are made up I guess.

Even if it is wrong it has been a bit of light relief. :D

I'm sure I heard about the possibility of Chilwell leaving before I had seen him play. To Liverpool, I think it was.

Wolves play a counterattacking style and a 3 at the back formation that means a lot of their players are very specialised in a way that wouldn't be worth the risk trying to sign them and adapt them to system of play used by bigger clubs, which are traditionally possession based and play 4 at the back (exactly how we play). In addition, it really just depends on what big clubs (mostly PL clubs) need. Chelsea need a left back, not a ball-playing defensive midfielder, so they go for Chilwell instead of Neves. Man United needed a centre back, the best option available in the league was Maguire, so they got him and not Jimenez.

Also, we keep losing big players because we churn them out like nobodies business. Most PL clubs have 1-3 "big players" that could probably play at the very highest level (obvious exception being Burnley). We have well over 5 at this moment in time, so of course clubs are more likely to buy ours, we have more.
