Just really wished people used this energy in a more constructive manner.

I honestly believed this pandemic might make community return. In reality it’s made the extremes exacerbated and folk get wrapped into theories of the absurd.

All that human energy wasted on that rather than something positive for the human race collectively

Odd comment..

Whether you agree with it or not, many of the crowd - outside the usual rent a rabble bores - are exactly doing what you ask; spending their energy on something positive for the human race.

You might not agree with them, but at least they are trying

Mate that's incredibly naive. We had 1,715 new cases today.

What’s the death rate though. I know it’s obviously a delay, but if 2 people in 1700 are dying, it’s not exactly a lot is it.  And I would have thought that by now and with such low death figures, surely the doctors could establish if their deaths were directly caused by the virus instead of the uncertainty we still seem to have regarding the death certificate saying the person died with Covid not because of it.

That’s your interpretation of my post.

My comment could quite be aimed at protests for environment as I saw with my own eyes on Friday. Demanding unrealistic aims. Which included protesting posing as service workers to get access to bridges etc.

I think protesting that 5G is causing Covid, that there is a paedo ring amongst Hollywood celebrities and that Bill Gates is some kingpin of it all isn’t a positive for the human race. That’s some of the opinions held amongst those protesting - incredibly bonkers and absolutely the anti-uniting themes.

I understand that the vast majority of protesters won’t have those views but id completely want to disassociate myself from those views. Additionally have to ask what part of their views do you think are for the better of the human race?

Time like this uniting behind the health workers who’ve worked their absolute hearts out across the world - demanding that they are paid better and treated better by governments across the world would certainly be a better use of time.

Ironically at a period when we have those conspiracy theories out there - we have the owner of Amazon plonking billons on his fortune and Elon Musk ready to stick a chip in your head

The anti restriction movement is growing across europe with a group trying to storm the German parliament. The devil makes work for idle hands.

Just as ugly having the Celtic cross and other emblems displayed in Berlin at that protest. Uttterly detestable

Deaths are low currently, but gambling with infection rates rising is how we start to see deaths spiking again. I'm not suggesting we need to be lockeddown, but reopening football grounds everywhere isn't exactly the greatest idea.

Also at a guess I'd assume identifying the exact cause of death isn't always as simple with corona around, especially with it being difficult to pinpoint when a person became infected. For example if Person X died of a heart attack, but also tests positively for Corona posthumously, you can't definitively identify whether corona played a role in the death or not.

A very simplistic way of looking at it I know but come the end of the year when the annual Uk death figure is released we should be able to get some idea how many excess deaths there has been due to the virus.

It’s a real crude way of looking at it but if we’re seeing single digit deaths, factor in a 4 week lag and go for roughly 5 deaths in 1000 cases. Was likely hundreds of thousands of cases in late Feb/March.

Genuine question, but why would the government want to force us to wear masks and to not let us go out and socialise with our family and friends if we could do? What do these people protesting against masks etc. think is going on?

Heard people saying the government wants to control us etc. but surely it is in the government's interest to have everywhere that generates income through tax open for business etc. as it would mean more money for the country. So I don't think the current restrictions are there to punish us at all, why can these protesters not see this?

Who knows how many cases there were in Feb/March? Medical statisticians could project figures, but they'd inevitably be rough estimates.

But I don't think you can draw the conclusion you do. In Feb/March, Covid was still low-profile, there was no lockdown and people of all ages were getting on with their lives as normal.

Whatever the infection rate, it's reasonable to assume that it was spread among all age-groups without major distinctions - so plenty of elderly were getting infected.

A lot of data and anecdotal evidence suggests that infections are now concentrated among young people and those of working age, a lot less among  the elderly, who are inevitably being more cautious given the greater risk.

That would lead to a much lower proportion of deaths to infections now.

The death rate for the whole period now stands at 0.063% ( 42,000 people have died out of a population of 66 million.) They estimate about treble that amount will die from other illnesses not treated during the last 6 months!!

we are now in a recession, loads of people have lost jobs which will have a knock on effect, then add in all the social distancing and quarantining, masks and so on... they are controlling everything we do

We may be out of a recession, no? I thought July figures showed growth.

I believe the technical definition of a recession is 2 successive quarters of negative growth - which was the case Jan-Mar & Apr-June, I think.

There was a small upturn in GDP in July (though from a much lower base than pre-Covid).

If that is true for the July-Sept quarter overall (likely, I imagine), then technically we'll be out of recession at the end of September - but almost certainly still with a much lower GDP than pre-Covid.

And the government is encouraging businesses to open back up and get people back in to the office, the masks are to try and limit the spread of the virus (which they are proven to do so) - the protests just seem like an excuse for conspiracy theorists to go mad against the government for no reason

Oh god. Conspiracy theorists have really shone in the last six months haven't they?

Liberals take note - this is what happens when people are all allowed to think their equally as clever. You get deadly disease deniers.

For reference, I know 2 people that have died from Coronavirus, and directly from it. Granted not friends or family but people I have worked with. I have close family who are nurses who have witnessed people suffering from it and were rushed off their feet in APril and early May because of it.

A lot of momentum gathering behind people denying the virus and/or underestimating it.

I am all for getting back to work and getting back to normal but I also see absolutely no harm in taking precautions with distancing and wearing a mask in shops etc. It's not a big deal and could prevent you or someone you know from losing a loved one.
