There is some more data, on hospitals, which goes a long way to pointing out why the current problems exist.  For starters, we were 40k short of the number of nurses required before all of this started and now we've got many off isolating, upwards of 30% of the workforce according to data I've seen.  Could be false though, but so was 500k and 4k a day in mid October.  Should have properly planned throughout the summer what to do in the winter resurgence which was always going to happen.  I'll stop there...

It’s hard to recruit nurses in a pandemic, and it tends to take a few years to train them.

Max salary for a nurse with no extra responsibility or specialism is 31k despite being a degree level job nowadays.

 

Teachers can get up to 42 k without responsibilities and Police officers 41k

 

It’s pretty obvious why theirs a shortage

According to the official figures, in April-May, 35.4% of people admitted to hospital with cornavirus were aged 18-64.  In December-January, 39.0%.

 

My guess for the increase would be because younger people are not locking down as thoroughly as they did first time round; older people still are.

At my place of work there are 3 guys in one department that who always have a cold or something and usually at least one of them is off per month. Over the last year, nothing, not one sniffle, i actually made the point that at least the rona seems to have cured our sick note problem.

'Well here's a thought. Instead of cherry picked confirmation bias, horseshit from Mike Yeadon and dangerous opinion pieces from the ironically titled 'Critic" how about some objective data some independently verifiable facts and some actual science? - then I wouldn't have to.

Good question and a good point Yorkster. Flu isn't really a reportable disease, saying that, from memory, PHE releases reports each year of influenza surveillance results from the previous flu season.
