GK : Rab Douglas (thought he'd be good coming from Celtic)

CB : Wayne Brown (we thought he would be the next Matt Elliott he ended up being more like the next Dennis Wise)

CB : Matt Mills (no explanation needed)

RB : Riccardo Scimeca (thought he was quality for Forest)

LM : Demarai Gray (unfulfilled potential)

CM : Gelson Fernandes (did OK but he had such a big rep before coming here)

CM : Gokhan Inler talented but not suited to this league)

CM : Gareth Williams (had the impression he was good at Forest but he was shockingly bad here)

RM : Ahmed Musa (I always expected him to be shit but some on here thought he would be the new Vardy so included for that reason)

ST : Islam Slimani (arrived with a big reputation but played like a donkey most of the time)

ST : Roman Bednar (just beats Beckford into the team)

I think that I'd put several in front of Slimani such as Dudley Campbell, Mark DeVries, Steve Moran, Roger Davies.

... and the ex-Chelsea toe rag is way beyond disappointing. Just mentioning the name makes me feel bilious.

De Vries is the odd one out in that list for me  . I never expected him to be anything other than a big immobile lump and was only “disappointed “ once - that cup game against spurs

We’ve signed some great players, we’ve also signed some dross.

We’ve also signed some players that have had loads of hype, an amazing YouTube compilation and it just hasn’t worked for them here at all.

What’s your “Disappointing XI”?

Mine:

GK : “Casino” Jimmy Nielsen

CB Nicolas Priet

CB : Matt Mills

CB : Matthew Upson

LM : Dem Gray

CM : Bartosz Kaputska

CM : Adrien Silva

CM : Dennis Wise

RM : Hossein Kaebi

ST : Islam Slimani

ST : Adi Akinbiyi

Good thread Martin keown has to be in there at CB.

Also gokhan Inler I was expecting a world beater.

I'm not having Wayne Brown forgetting his political bust up he was quite a good defender here and featured heavily for a side that just missed out on promotion to the Premier league in their first attempt after league 1.

Zelko Kalac went on to play for A C Milan, won us the play-off final v Palace by just coming on as a sub.

Hold on, I’m not having that!

Steve Claridge’s shin won us the game v Palace.

Managed by Peter Taylor I assume.

I was never disappointed by Taylor as I expected nothing, Paulo Sousa would by my choice to manage this team.

I thought he’d be brilliant and we’d play amazing football and strut into the Premier League - I got 6 down away at Portsmouth.

Bloody hell there’s some good players in there lol!

Stearman, Oakley, Howard, and Hume I remember as being decent for us.

Richard Stearman was quite a prospect for us, didn’t he go on to play for Wolves after we were relegated to league 1?

I always find Matt Oakley a bit of a strange player to analyse. He was good for us in League One without looking like he was playing way below his level, which was surprising given he was a starter for a Premier League side not long before. But hard to say he was disappointing given he was captain of the first side we could be proud of in about 5 years.

He always seemed to be playing out wide rather than CM.

Agree with the shouts for Matt Mills, though we probably expected more given the fee and the length of trying to get him.

Neil Danns was a bit of a let down.

Gk: Rob Robert Zieler - came in as a World Cup winner and made the most saves in the bundesliga that season, for relatively cheap as well (€3m?) seemed like he would be a good back up but was largely shite with poppadom hands.

Rb: Hossein Kaebi - signed him off a highlights reel against Portugal in which he looked world class but was anything but.

Cb: Matt Mills - record signing at the time, absolutely shite

Cb: Luis Hernandez - signed on a free and seemed to be an atypical Steve Walsh/Nigel Pearson era signing, la Liga team of the year, glowing reference from Zidane but was slower than Huth and played at right back which probably didn’t help or make sense.

Lb: Bakayogo - Signed on a free, him and Dyer were going to be like Usain Bolt and Zohan Blake down that left hand side and was given a lot of praise from Tranmere fans. Spent most of the time injured but was seen in an away end in the championship winning season which is good.

Rm: Ben Marshall - scored some absolute screamers and seemed to have the potential to play in the premier league. Barnsley away was the end for him and after listening to his podcast recently it’s clear that he has his own issues, recently retired after going on trial at Bolton.

Cm: Adrien Silva - 14 seconds didn’t help but doesn’t explain why he was the most lightweight and ineffective centre midfielder at the club, especially given his pedigree and unwanted by Rodgers who on paper would seem like his ideal midfielder.

Cm: Bartosz Kapustka - Had an unreal euros and was a player that I really wanted at the time and seemed like he was going to go places, turns out those places were Freiburg and Leuven. Maybe he left home too soon and couldn’t adjust. Now back at Legia Warsaw and seems to be doing well.

Lm: Musa - After he scored that goal against Barcelona I was sure he’d tear things up but his time here is typified by that shank out for a goal kick at Sheff Utd.

St: Hume - one of my first favourite players and was disappointed he left when we were relegated. Again after listening to his podcast it’s clear now why but still disappointing nonetheless.

St: Beckford - was expecting him to come here with a point to prove after not having a great time at Everton, but think he was just a flat track bully really and was a decent player at championship and league one level.

Agree apart from Wayne Brown   who I think was included for his political beliefs rather than football  His omission  in n the play off probablly cost promotion

Konchesky, Solano and Waghorn were all ok for us at worst.

Waghorn could be included if you're talking about his permanent transfer.

He was good on loan and looked like he had great potential, but then disappointing once we signed him permanently.

Been watching City since the early sixties and the only player, until this recent upsurge, who I can recall being utterly disappointed with is Akinbyi - although, weirdly, I had a downer on Mike Stringfellow and Howard Riley's antics just made me laugh.

I hated Mclintock for pissing off to the Arsenal and Alan Clarke for going to Leeds after just one season here. Boy, was I naïve then.

Apart from the times when we did have extra-special squads (Gillies, Bloomfield and MON), I've generally accepted second-best as normal. So I conclude that I see City through blue-coloured specs.

Now, if you'd asked for a most disappointing manager XI I could easily reel it off a list and probably some subs too. There were some who were just crap, some who weren't 100% committed and those who promised a great deal and left hidden under a raincoat by the back door. They know who they are 😠.

This is UNCANNY! I think you have the mindset of a whole generation of City fans of a certain age and to be fair, you have exactly expressed our feelings, talk about hit the nail on the head! RESPECT!

GK Ricardo (brilliant for Portugal, liability for us)

CB Keown (claim for captaincy of this XI strengthened after reading Micky Adams' autobiography)

CB Mills (woeful)

CB Howey (I thought he was great Newcastle and Man City - complete bombscare for us)

RWB Kaebi (I'd imagine he will feature in most people's XIs)

CM Silva (should've been so much better)

CM Inler (a little unfortunate to arrive when he did)

CM Wise (I genuinely liked him at Chelsea but just wasn't Prem quality by the time he signed for us)

LWB Musa (*that* goal vs Barcelona!)

CF Slimani (started well but the fact we struggled to give him away says a lot)

CF Beckford (I thought he'd fire us to promotion...)

Musa at LWB? lol
