I think Thomas has been a great addition to the squad this year. Great performance at Villa and increasingly involved going forward. I agree that he sometimes turns back, but I think that is being overly cautious rather than lacking skill. He’s clearly very good technically.

The loan move was perfect for him and he’ll be useful for us next season, not just because he’s a good player but because of the experience this season will have got him. 

Except he’s not a holding midfielder so he isn’t behind N’didi, Mendy or Hamza. He was only behind Tilemans and Praet.

I just don't think a loan move will necessarily benefit him, he's already playing enough matches here and by and large doing well. He was man of the match vs Aston Villa, likewise on his debut last season and has had a number of other really good performances this season.

 

I get that he's been taken off at half time twice but I think that was as much tactical as it was him being poor, he certainly wasn't poor vs Wolves he's had a decent half and it was a shock he went off but from memory that was due to the impending substitution of Traore.

 

Thomas is only 19 and already performing in the first team, Chilwell wasn't doing that nor was Barnes. Loan spells in my opinion should be for players who either aren't going to get many games for us in a season and therefore we can afford to try and get them game time elsewhere or because they aren't yet good enough, Thomas is getting games and is good enough.

 

Defensively he has improved no end, he's very intelligent at reading the game and his last ditch blocks in recent games have been exceptional, even did one in the Arsenal game before he was subbed.

 

I'm shocked you think he's poor going forward, he already has 2 assists and a goal + won the penalty that Iheanacho missed vs Palace. Thats not a bad return in 15-20 games. Chilwell didn't exactly excel in that area to start with, in fact it wouldn't surprise me if Thomas already has more goal contributions than Chilwell did in his first 40 or 50 games let alone his first full season. 

 

I am confident he will continue to prosper under Rodgers, and he'll develop more doing so where he's playing PL and European football than going and working under some inferior coach in the Championship for a season. Dont forget that Chilwell only played 8 games on loan in the Championship at a similar age and it still took him a good season or two before he was even at Thomas's performance level and likewise Barnes, it still took him a decent amount of time to make an impact in the PL and yet Thomas is already doing that.

Funnily enough James Justin was poor going forward last season and has only improved on that this season. Thomas has already linked up really well with Barnes at times.

Leicester City provide proof to Sidnei Tavares over his future amid contract talks

 

Leicester City believe they have shown Sidnei Tavares he is in the best place for his development as the club bid to tie down the Portuguese midfielder.

 

Tavares is the latest player off the Cityproduction line, making his senior debut in last week’s Europa League tie against Slavia Prague having impressed manager Brendan Rodgers in pre-season games and in training.

 

However, he is out of contract in the summer, and has been linked to a handful of clubs, including Benfica and Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. Tavares was born in the country and represents their Under-19s, but his family moved to England when he was a baby and he has been in City’s academy from a young age.

 

The club are currently in talks with Tavares and believe they have proven to the 19-year-old that his future is best-served at the King Power Stadium, given his current first-team involvement and the facilities at the training ground.
 

“He’s obviously a talented boy,” manager Brendan Rodgers said. “Any player from a football perspective will see this as a great environment to have that opportunity to play.

 

“It (contract talks) is something that’s outside of myself. There are discussions going on between Jon (Rudkin, director of football) and his representatives and family.

 

“From a football perspective, he enjoys being here, you can see how much I think of him and having him around the squad at this time and sticking him into an important game.

 

“That’s all you can do. If there are other things they’re looking for, whether it’s finance or something else, that’s always up for negotiation. But from a football perspective, he’s in a really good place here.”
 

Rodgers was preparing to hand the teenager his Premier League debut on Sunday but Jonny Evans’ injury scuppered the plans.

 

However, with potentially eight senior players out for the trip to Burnley, and with Youri Tielemans in need of a rest, Tavares could get a chance over the next couple of games.

 

Rodgers said: “He has great qualities, he’s 6ft 2, has a wonderful view of the game, he covers the ground well, he can see a pass, he has a nice touch.

 

“He needs to get stronger, he needs to have a greater physicality to compete, but he has potential.

 

“He came on (against Slavia) and he showed he has confidence. He has to continue working very hard in order to be in this squad. He has big potential for me, so it was good to see him out on the field playing.”

The vast majority of Portuguese supporters, even the most inattentive ones, know that in Leicester City they line up a Portuguese international: Ricardo Pereira. The side represents the foxes since 2018/19, when he left FC Porto to head to England, but it is not the only Portuguese member of the working group at the behest of Brendan Rodgers.

 

Sidnei Tavares. He may not yet be a well-known name in national and international football, but he promises to be talked about in the near future. The 19-year-old midfielder made his debut for Leicester in the Europa League last week and was on the Premier League game for the first time - defeat by Arsenal (1x3). He didn't get in, but he believes that this scenario is close.

 

He was born in Portugal, but at the age of nine he accompanied his parents to move to England. He grew up there, gained a taste for football very early and playing in the park with his cousins quickly made the leap to Leicester, where he has been ... 10 years. He experienced the historic achievement of the Premier League, in 2015/16, as a young player of the formation, and now shares the dressing room with some of the main figures of that team: Kasper Schmeichel, Marc Albrighton and Jamie Vardy.
At the age of 15, the young midfielder was called to an internship by the English youth teams, but later he ended up accepting the invitation from Portugal, and already has internationalizations for the under-18s and under-19s of the Quinas team. zerozero (ZZ): You were born in Portugal, but you are going to England very early ...

 

Sidnei Tavares (ST): Yes, very early indeed! He was about nine months old. I came with my father and my mother, however my family broke up and I stayed here with my father. I started playing ball and I'm more used to England.

 

ZZ: But you still have a strong connection to Portugal, right?

 

ST: Yes, yes, I always had a relationship. I keep in touch with friends in my neighborhood and we often talk on the cell phone. I am used to going to Portugal and I will always visit them when I have the opportunity.

 

ZZ: And how does football appear in your life?

 

ST: It was the thing I wanted most, since I was a kid. One day I told my father that I wanted to play football and he told me that if that was really my dream that I would have to make a lot of sacrifices. I started playing in the park with my cousins and then I joined a team - Carib - and then I came to Leicester.

 

ZZ: To this day. It's been 10 years ...

 

ST: True.

 

ZZ: Many young people during childhood have this dream, but not everyone succeeds. What do you think made the difference in your case?

 

ST: I think it was my family. They are always on my side and give me advice. Then also the sacrifices I made over time. A football player has to make a lot of sacrifices if he really wants to be

a professional player. Only then can you make your dream come true. Sometimes if I want to go out with my friends, I can't because I have a game or training the next day. But it is part ... If you want to take this seriously, you have to make sacrifices.

 

 ZZ: When do you realize that you can become a professional?

 

ST: I've always believed in myself since I was a kid. But I realized that I could become a professional at 14-15 years old. It was at this stage that I signed my first training contract. It's usually a contract that you sign at 16, but I had that opportunity at 14. I was the youngest to have that contract. Then I also had my professional contract at 16-17, since then Leicester thought I had the quality to be in the first team.

 

ZZ: You have been at Leicester for 10 years, so you have been closely following the Premier League achievement in 2015/16. What was it like to live that moment inside the club?

 

ST: It was a year of many surprises, nobody expected it. An exciting year! The champion title showed more of the club and now Leicester is a big club in England that fights for a place in the

Champions League. And who knows if we won't win the league again.

 

ZZ: Kaspar Schemeichel, Albrighton and Vardy are some of those that have continued since that year. You certainly looked at them as examples and now you are with them in the dressing room. How has it been?

 

ST: Yes, of course they are some examples, who won the Premier League and the Cup. The first time I entered the dressing room I was a little nervous, as I was a 16 year old kid training with the first team. Seeing Albrighton, Vardy ... Of course you're nervous, but then you're 2-3 times and you're used to it [laughs].

 

ZZ: What do they say to you?

 

ST: They give me tips on how I can improve my game, they say that they believe in me and that I can always count on them. They know the quality that I have. If the coach got me to play with them, they also know that I can play with them.

 

ZZ: You still have Ricardo Pereira. It's good to speak Portuguese, isn't it? [laughs]

 

ST: Yes, yes. We speak Portuguese in training and I feel like I'm at home.

 

ZZ: People are going to start hearing more and more about you, but for those who don't know you, how do you characterize yourself? Are you a means of destruction or construction?

 

ST: I like building, assisting, scoring goals and having the ball. I basically like to be different from others. I like to show people that I am not just any player, that I am special. I want to be that player that the others look at and say: 'I would like to have this player on my team'.

 

ZZ: Do you think it was that special side that Brendan Rodgers saw in you?

 

ST: Yes, in my opinion, that is the main reason for me to be in the first team. I like to show myself and I like to be what I am. Different.

 

ZZ: And how is your relationship with him?

 

ST: My relationship with the mister is good. Give me tips, we talk every day. For me it is one of the best in the world. He put me in the first team and I am very happy for that.

ZZ: Last week you made your debut in the first team and then in a Europa League game. The result was not the best, but what did it feel like?

 

ST: I was excited. I wanted to go on the field and show what I could do, I wanted to score ... Unfortunately, I didn't make it, but it's for the next one. During the game I didn't think much that it was my debut, I thought it was just another game. Only at the end did I become aware that I had made my debut.

 

ZZ: I imagine you have received a lot of messages. Anything in particular?

 

ST: Messages? My God, I'm not even going to say [laughs]. Especially from my family and also from my closest friends. When I got home my family was very happy and proud. It's cool!

 

ZZ: It ends up being a dream come true for them too ...

 

ST: Yes, of course. They always supported me, from the first day. Thank goodness I managed to make my debut and they are happy for me. I also want a better life for my family and that is the most important thing for me now.

 

ZZ: The Premier League debut is now missing. Yesterday [the day before yesterday] you were already on the bench in the game against Arsenal (1x3)…

 

ST: It is true. I didn't get in, but I believe I can make my debut in the next game. My next goal is to make my Premier League debut. It is one of the best leagues in the world. We are in 3rd place, Champions position, and we want to show that it is possible to continue like this. It's not easy. The Premier League has 6-7 top teams and there are several that will be left out [of the Champions League places], but we believe in us very much and we want to be in the top-4. We have a lot of quality, we are a family and we are confident.

 

ZZ: You have a contract until the end of the season and your name has been associated with several clubs, including some Portuguese. Does it affect you in any way?

 

ST: The news doesn't move me. I only think about playing the ball. Whatever comes will come… The most important thing is the present and my present is at Leicester.

 

ZZ: And playing in Portugal?

 

ST: I never know tomorrow. You never know ... It may or may not happen. But as I said, I am focused on the present and the present is Leicester.

 

ZZ: Speaking of Portugal, you are already a young international in the national teams, but before that you were even called by England. How did it all happen?

 

ST: Yes, I was called up to the English team when I was 15 years old. But I always wanted to play for Portugal. The English team was a good experience, but then I chose Portugal. Portugal is the country where I was born, where I have my family and friends and I want to play for. Getting to Selection A is also a dream. For me, Portugal is always in my heart.

 

ZZ: If we were to talk again a year from now, what would you like to tell me?

 

ST: Good question… A year from now when you call me again, I hope it will be because I'm bursting with the first team [laughs]. Aim well. A year from now, you'll call me again!

ST: I want to play at the highest level and be considered one of the best or the best in the world.

Rodgers wouldn't say those things for the hell of it. He's painted a picture for him to succeed not just here but anywhere. It's up to him to put in the work and leave the BS of the under 23's behind. No excuses now the opportunities are there. Hope he stays and toughs it out.

This is all part of the process, we are giving him first team opportunities and he will now hopefully sign a new deal. Its been a great turnaround, we have a potential star on our hands however much people want to dismiss me promoting him so much this season. I only did it because I could see a potential waste of a very talented youngster who's been with us since he was about 8.

Whether it's this forum, little bits and pieces coming from Brendan lately or the youtube video I just watched, I'm convinced we see him start either tomorrow or against Brighton. If he signs a new deal, along with KDH we could have some really nice depth to the midfield next year.

At least he's very complimentary of Rodgers and Leicester. Not even any vague answers in regard to his future that you might get for someone who's contract is up and is being linked elsewhere. I think he's come across quite well in recent months from these Portuguese interviews, the one a few months back was completely at odds with what we were being told about him and his stance with the club.

Yeah, he's got a quick turn of pace even though his style of play seems quite languid. Covers the pitch very well.

Theyre never looked upon favourably by clubs particularly when they're trying to sort a new deal for him.
