Saudi ownership at LCFC

In a parallel universe where we have an owner who wants to sell up and the best (only) interested party is the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, what’s your reaction? Cut all ties with the club? Stop going to games? Continue as normal?

Despite the excellent PR exercises and free t-shirts and beers, our owners have made their wealth through some very questionable connections. You’re probably not in a position to buy a Premier League football club these days without at least some unscrupulous past or even current links/activities.

 

So I’m almost feeling like we’d be at the point where you’d be choosing between a punch in the face or a kick in the balls. We’d certainly not be in any position to claim we only accept squeaky clean or completely morally sound ownership.

 

I know many King Power FCers and “our owners can do no wrong” types won’t want to admit that however.

You're basically saying that Saudi investment is going to make Newcastle a very successful club, although it isn't quite that simple.

 

If, and is a big if, it made them as successful as Manchester City, and you're asking if I'd be OK with that, the answer is yes. Hell yes.

 

I support my team and success is what it's all about. 

 

If we were in the top 2 every year and getting to Champions League finals and challenging on all fronts with World Class players all over the pitch, I wouldn't say no.

Personally ownership of the club is important to me. I wouldn't want owners from Saudi or Qatar or China. It does bother me that ours aren't squeaky clean BUT they do enough to demonstrate they care.

 

If it came out they were exploiting their workers or engaged in really illegal stuff, then I would have to step away from supporting for a while.

 

At the end of the day, football is about people in the stands and on the pitch. It's for them. Not the owners.

I would firmly say no.

 

When King Power first took over the club, we were the Man City of the Championship. We brought in big name managers like Sven and broke records for the division for players like Matt Mills, Beckford, etc. Honestly it made me dislike the club at that time a lot because the team spirit that won me over during the MON era was replaced by buying our way out of trouble. It didn't sit right with me. That bunch of mercenaries got us nowhere, Pearson's band of brothers and boozers by contrast was essentially the blue print for our greatest ever hour.

 

That we won the league in the way we did is the greatest achievement in team sports. I would not trade that in for the success that Chelsea or Man City have experienced in a million years! If Football is only about winning, don't support Leicester. Support Real Madrid or whatever the current team of the moment is. For me the people that support such clubs, other than local fans, are the type of people that need to have some kind of success in their life to make up for other shortcomings, and I think it's quite pathetic to be like that. It's just 22 men chasing a piece of leather around for 90 minutes in a game.

 

The appeal of Football is about tribalism, the drama on a weekend to escape the hum drum of the working week, to meet your mates and let your hair down with a hobby that unites us all. It's not about winning, it's about enjoying the journey. I often say that you don't choose the team you support, it chooses you. There are plenty of people in Leicester that don't support the local club, and there are plenty that do. It says a lot about the individual as to whom they support.

 

If you support Leicester, you are one of the luckiest supporters out there. Why? Because you got to experience something that was so good and so wholesome that it was statistically more likely for Elvis Presley to be found alive than to see what we all experienced together. That is probably as good as it will ever get, but so what. That was sheer, unexplainable joy in it's purest form. It will probably be in most fans top 5 moments in their life after the birth of their children and meeting their partner.

 

For me, Kylian Mbappe can do one as he loses the ball in the final third and then doesn't put any effort in to get it back. Ditto Messi and Neymar (Messi was at fault for 3 goals when Bayern Munich battered them 8-2 a few seasons ago!). Cristiano Ronaldo can take off his shirt and reveal his sixteen pack and shove it where the sun don't shine. Give me Jamie "Two Red Bulls for Breakfast and a Skittles Vodka for dinner" over that lot any day of the week.

 

Buying success with a bunch of mercenaries is for fair weather fans. The type that unfortunately the club is attracting more and more of as the club profile continues to rise. But that's not me. I hope Leicester keeps the current set of values it seems to have. Trying to be the underdog that gives hope to ALL football fans and players across the world. That's the club I support, and I hope we never become like one of the money bag teams.

This. I’m sadly toying with the fact I know soon that I’ll pack the football in. Prices, ownership, fan engagement being some of the reasons.
