If it wasn't for the signings of Bertrand and Vestergaard I would have said he'd had a successful time here. Those two have undone his hard work, you'd like to think any recruitment maestro worth their weight could muster up something better than that.

It doesn't even feel like hindsight as many questioned the signings at the time.

I think a good way to sum up good signings are the ones he'd happily take to Atalanta.

Fofana? Of course.

JJ? In a heartbeat.

Tim? That's where we got him from, I wonder if that's where Lee got contact?

Bertrand and Vestergaard. What do you think?

Conspiracy theory alert............

Is this Congerton leaving because he knows something is afoot??  maybe he knows that Rodgers is off to pastures new in the summer and can't follow him?

obviously, it could also very well be a bloke just building his own career and going in his own direction... but him and rodgers are pretty much hand in hand throughout their careers...

not that I'm claiming Rodgers is going to Atalanta by the way.... but maybe somewhere that they wouldn't allow congerton to follow....

...it is a very strange move for him!!!

For someone who follows Rodgers around, it seems strange that he would be striking out on his own, especially to Atalanta who are gaining a good reputation for their transfer policy and the way they play.

Congerton going to Atalanta is an option so far removed, unless he has long term contacts within the club that we don't know about.

Rodgers to Atalanta may not be so far fetched,  and we get Gasperini.

Interesting that he's going to Atalanta, because say what you will about Congerton, but Atalanta are an extremely well run club. Brilliant track record of finding and developing young talent, and have reached the Champions League several times in recent seasons. In many ways they are the Italian version of us!

Was thinking exactly the same!

I suspect some of Atalanta's decision will be motivated by getting a first-hand understanding how we do things at the club given our success, and whether there is anything from our scouting or data analytics they could use themselves.

No different to what happened with Walsh and Macia

All leaving to get a more senior role

Interestingly both were binned off within a couple of seasons were doing poorly

...from what they had achieved at this club, it would have been reasonable to believe they would succeed in their new roles.

It would not have been perceived as a big gamble to bring either of them in to push their clubs forward.

I would definitely have either of them back at this club, without question.

Macia is still out of a job isn't he but assume he'd be after a DoF type role wherever he goes next

Gasperini just signed an extension with Atalanta

Isn't it a step up in role though? He'd going in there as general manager which is a bit like a Director of Football/Sporting Director. He's done this before and been a disaster but the temptation to have more responsibility and influence over the entire footballing operation obviously interests him.

Wow, that's a curious one.

All the best Lee, you were nowhere near as bad as what I feared you'd be. Which in many ways shows its probably the model and project already in place at clubs where he's been. We have a great track record and a model that keeps going regardless of incoming and outgoings in the recruitment department.

"Damned by faint praise"

Another issue I take with the recruitment team is that we have a horribly unblanced squad. We have 1 genuine top 6 wide player that's on our books full time. The fact we had to change formation when Harvey got injured is a massive failure on the part of the recruitment team.

Not sure who the blame lies with on that one though. Probably a mixture of Rudkin, Rodgers and Congerton.

Justin was being linked to us way before Congerton came in. Castagne is the main one I think Congerton gets credit for as he'd been a target for them at Celtic. Fofana/Daka are signs that there's still life in the old dog but I'm surprised at how many people don't think our recruitment has dipped since he came in.

All signings can be hit or miss. Our recruitment for a couple of seasons before he came in also included Ghezzal, Benkovic, Adrien Silva, Iborra and Diabate. Our signings have generally been good for the last few years, excluding 2017 summer. There’s loads of people involved in recruitment and congerton doesnt have complete control at all. I’m general since he’s been here the recruitment has been good. But people made their mind up on him before he arrived, much like they did with Rodgers.

People acting like every bad signing is Congerton’s fault.  We have a technical scouting team, not a despotic scouting czar. lol

They were Rodgers fault last week.

Progress! So once Congerton goes, we will be just one big bunch of happy campers fuelled with positivity and hope. :scarf:

The likes of Castagne, Daka, Fofana, Youri, Justin are negated by Vestegaard, Bertrand, Perez, Bennett.

The £100m-odd worth of signings who we could easily make a massive profit on if we wanted to, are negated by the £40m spent on a short term backup in Vestegaard, Perez who we'd make some of it back on if we wished to, a free signing for depth and a backup loanee who came in for half a season?

Seems a bit harsh.

Fair comment.

Maybe just expected too much from Vestergaard and Bertrand. I actually don't mind Perez but for me he just slips into the 'poor signing' category.

He's not been bad. I think the real sticking point is that for every Fofana there have been some absolute howlers - Bennett, Under, Vestergaard.

Rather promote from the academy and save the money if that's the quality of your "squad players"

How many of them are purely Congerton alone or recommendations from our scouting department? Credit where credit is due though either way they were signed on his watch wether he recommended them himself or realised the value of listening to our scouting department.

He is head of senior recruitment so regardless of which of his staff recommended them (if not he himself), they're his responsibility.

He's not done as bad as people thought he would.

Interesting though as he was clearly brought in to follow Rodgers.

Wonder who we get in place. Someone with a bigger reputation? A better pull in for players?

Mixed bag!

Good way of looking at it Stan, we won an FA Cup because of the good signings… and we could look back in 5 years time having made £300m+ selling those good ones which will as always set us up to sign young talent and expand the stadium too. Self sufficiency at its finest!

Also as I always stated when he came in, our recruitment team, like any business office really, is a success because of everyone that works there, especially the analysts… the bloke at the top will take the credit and the flack but it’s the people in the team that are finding the talent.
