With the price of everything seemly skyrocketing, it got me thinking whether we could save some money by getting rid of our TV license. We very rarely watch live TV so don't think we would miss it. I thought it would be interesting to see how many people actually get by without one.

Yep, use iplayer a lot and listen to 5live a lot to. Plus use BBC sounds for podcasts.

Honestly if you are looking at cost saving there are probably easier things in your budget you can cut out.

outrageous, outdated absurd fee.

Didnt have one when we lived there and amazed they still exist, must surely cost more to employ the "Mr bastards" than the amount they generate.

Not really the extent of the TV license.

Your TV licence is only required for broadcast TV and iPlayer. You do not need it for the radio (inc BBC sounds), or ITVhub, 4OD, Netflix etc or any catchup service.

no you're correct but about 90% of the cost of the TV Licence pays for the the BBC, Radio stations, BBC sounds etc.

So no TV licence no Radio.

I agree its a bit dated and maybe there should be different levels of payment or even reduce the cost and add product placement / sponsored shows.

Not sure anyone would care if there was real beers / food used in the Queen Vic or if Peaky blinders was sponsored by Volvo or something similar.

Hello Mr Licence Inspector

I’ve watched all the YouTube clips on not paying for it and I know it’s pretty easy to avoid but I can’t be doing with the hassle of the eventual knocks on the door, albeit I rarely answer if I don’t know who it is.  That said, I’d probably stop paying for it if it wasn’t for the fact my lounge is on the front and I don’t want to sit with the blinds closed constantly when I’m watching live tv. Saving a mere £150/60 a year isn’t going to make the apprehension of a bloke with a clipboard at my door worth it.

There's an obsession with how much BBC TV or Radio people consume. It's not just about that.

Credible journalism will also take a massive hit, at home, and internationally. Every week around the world, hundreds of millions of people living under populist or oppressive regimes turn to the BBC for news they can rely on.

You've just got to take a look at the fractured American media scene, which shows us the peril that a society can suffer when partisan and polarised information is—for the large majority of people—all there is. The people who say that the BBC is biased are the same people lapping up toxic drivel from the likes of the S*n, the Mail and their aunt Caroline on Facebook.

“Why should the government fund a publisher to do what the private sector is doing?” Simply, the private sector is failing to do the vital job of providing unbiased factual news and current affairs.

I haven't even seen it mentioned in the conversation, but if anyone's been a student (or had student offspring) in the last 20 years, they'll most likely have used BBC Bitesize. It's an essential free revision resource used by millions every year, curated for our school curriculums. Nah, bin it off, right? Who needs exam results?

The Tories have wanted to destroy the BBC since Thatcher because it could no longer be relied on to "uphold Tory values". In reality, it's because it dared to scrutinise her regime. Successive Murdoch empire-backed Conservative governments have also tried. I wonder why?

I dunno, call me a raging socialist but I think it's a much more important issue than whether you're watching Eastenders or listening to I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

Nope, rarely watch TV and when I do it's Netflix/Amazon Prime/YouTube. Called them up and said I don't require one, which means I don't get bothered by them knocking at the door for the next two years.

No.   You have to find ways around it here in Austria as the Licensing Officers do come a knocking on your door [even in a pandemic] as they are on commission.  Streaming is the way forward.

You still need it to watch on catch up, anything from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and so on

Nope, only live broadcasts and iPlayer, you don't need a license to watch catch up from ITV, Channel 4, or anywhere else.

Yes, you need a TV Licence to watch TV live online. You need a licence to watch or record any TV programme live, on any channel or TV service. ... This applies to any provider you use, including BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All 4, Sky Go, Virgin Media, BT TV, Apple TV, Now TV, YouTube, Roku and Amazon Prime Video.

Yeah I have one - I didn't bother when I first moved into my new place in March last year and played by the rules (no live TV at all, no iPlayer) but stumped up when the Euros came about. I still rarely watch live TV at all, but don't begrudge paying that much, plus as @OrielCaziado mentioned - although I never had any inspectors come about in the 3 or so months I wasn't paying, there's always that apprehension that someone might come and give you grief and I could not be arsed with arguing with someone even if I technically didn't have to pay
