May have misheard but when Brendan was being interviewed on the radio after the game yesterday I’m sure he said that Evans was joining up with Northern Ireland. I was astonished that we were allowing him to go after all the time he has been out.

I was equally unhappy he was joining up with the NI squad but as a few posters pointed out elsewhere, if there's an agreement for limited minutes, it's actually useful for us to get him some game time.

For me a lot depends on how Brendan tries to counteract the loss of Ndidi. Whether he trusts Mendy/ Choudhury/ Soumaré to adequately replace Ndidi. Or whether he reverts to a back 3. Whichever he decides I hope he sticks to it so we don’t end up in a muddle frequently changing formation between/ and during matches.

Not been a fan of us playing a back 3 as I don’t think it suits the majority of our players. However, based on the below teams I do believe the back 3 maybe does suit us a bit better in our current predicament, especially now we have our more attacking fullbacks and our better centre halves returning, meaning a good amount of rotation is possible between Evans/ Fofana/ Amartey and Justin/ Castagne/ Ricardo respectively.

Back 4

vs Man Utd

                  Schmeichel

Ricardo - Fofana - Söyüncü - Castagne

        Soumaré - Mendy - KDH

     Maddison - Iheanacho - Barnes

Vs PSV

                  Schmeichel

Justin - Evans - Söyüncü - Castagne

   Tielemans - Choudhury - KDH

  Maddison   -   Vardy   -   Barnes

Back 3

 Vs Man Utd

                Schmeichel

     Fofana - Amartey - Söyüncü

Ricardo - Mendy - KDH - Castagne

  Maddison - Iheanacho - Barnes

Vs PSV

                  Schmeichel

        Fofana - Evans - Söyüncü

Justin - Tielemans - KDH - Castagne

     Maddison - Vardy - Barnes

Don’t mean to throw a spanner in your works, but time and time again, for whatever reason, it’s been shown, that Soyuncu cannot seem to play well in a back three!

No you’re right it’s a fair comment. I only think it may work if we play it in more of a lopsided formation as we do currently with Maddison playing on the right but drifting into the 10 position when we’re in possession.

I think Barnes would end up playing high and wide on the left as he does now, because he’s another which hasn’t exactly thrived in this set up previously. So Castagne despite playing wing back would sit further back and therefore provide a bit more protection for Söyüncü on the left.

And then on the opposite flank Justin/ Ricardo would have acres of space to get up and support attacks on that right flank with Maddison then just in that pocket of space in between Justin - Tielemans - Vardy (for example). So we’d almost become a 4-2-3-1 in attack with the RCB Amartey/ Fofana shifting over slightly with the right wing back advancing high and wide to stretch the play.

That said, not sure if I’m just over complicating Ndidi being out, and should instead look for more of a like for like replacement ie. Mendy in the league and one of Hamza/ Soumaré in the UECL 😂

This will be a fixture to get out of the way. The upturn in league form makes this less relevant especially with PSV on the way.

Now our league status is safe it's gonna be a squad rotation exercise from here on I imagine.

To some extent, but I still think we would have our eye on finishing as high as possible, 8th is not beyond us with our games in hand.

Normally I'd go along with that but our injury crisis means that we can't afford any more slip ups. Its damage limitation until May except for Europe.

Its getting to a stage where I wouldn't be surprised if one of our players broke their arm putting on a kit before training!

Can't pass on the chance to do the double over these bastards for the first time since 1973. Full strength please!

Is Evans back in Leicester yet? I'd imagine if fit he'd be starting for this one.

Literally the only time I advocate a back 3 is against these lot, they don't press and they seem to set up perfectly for us.

Here's a piece of trivia, the last 5 times we've beaten them we've played a back 3.

1998, 2014, three times in 2021.

We won at Old Trafford last season for the first time since 1998 with a back four, then played the final two games with a back 3, lost both and blowed top four.

Also sure 2014 was a 4-3-3. Sorry, any false hope in a back 3 needs correcting :D

Hahahaa you might be right, I thought 2014 was some weird 3-4-3 with no holding midfielder and about 8 strikers.

You are right about the back 4 at Old Trafford, just assumed we'd maintained a back 3 as we had pretty much throughout that run from mid Feb to the end of the season.

Go full strength. We have 4 full recovery days before PSV at home.

Rest players v Palace

Probably a good idea as we are more likely to get a result in this one 😀

I seem to recall him doing quite well but only when playing as the middle centreback, not the LCB

What would you think of a high pressing 4-3-3, something like

Ricardo Amartey Soyuncu Thomas

Choudhury Mendy Dewsbury-Hall

Maddison Iheanacho Barnes

With Dewsbury-Hall and Choudhury given licence to push up the field and win the ball back very proactively

Still can't believe people are advocating switching to a back three again based on injuries.

Have we learned nothing from the first half of the season?

Important games we've won playing 3 at the back over the last 2 years...

Weve beaten Man Utd three times, Chelsea and Man City, to name a few.

When we play 3 at the back with three centre backs who can pass the ball and full backs that can play high its a very good option. When we've neither of those, it's not very good.
