Brendan Rodgers Pre-Match Press Conference vs Chelsea

Chelsea?

“Always a tough game, a top team. They showed against Spurs they are a very good side with technically good players with the motivation to win. They will be looking for that response from Leeds.”

No wins yet?

“It’s a matter of time. What we’ve shown in the Brentford and Southampton games is that we mustn’t stop. You have to keep concentrating. We need to increase the intensity."

Fofana?

“He won’t be available for the weekend. He has trained with our Under-21 squad.”

Expecting fourth bid?

“I’m not sure. It’s not my concentration. I can’t lose energy thinking so much about it. It’ll be between the clubs. We have to continue to work with what we have."

Similar to Maguire?

“No, it was totally different. I was aware over the course of the summer that that could happen. Harry in terms of his behaviour and his focus for the club, he was fantastic right until the last minute, then he moved on. It was different. Our focus is with the team."

Plans to bring in players?

“Hopefully that can be the case. It would be really good for the team, to improve the squad. Everyone knows the situation, and until that changes, we work with what we have.”

Injuries?

“We’ve got an issue around James Maddison but we’ll see how that is tomorrow. That would be the only doubt at the moment. He just felt a twinge when he was training yesterday.”

Mood in the camp?

“It’s absolutely fine. We are very lucky to work in the profession we do. There are more important things in life. Football is important for lots of people and we try to make people happy. I’m one of the last people who will lose their optimism. I know there is a lot of noise what we haven’t done in terms of improving the squad. But we come in to improve and develop, and that won’t change.”

Lack of chances?

“It’s always about the team. We scored two at Arsenal but didn’t create so much. I feel we’ve done enough to win games. Those connections improve as the season goes on. We have been in positions to win two of the three games. We recognise that in the final third of the pitch, we need more speed, more flexibility, and not be so safe. We’ve worked on that.”

Lacking belief in attack?

“It’s a bit of everything. You need to have big belief. There are things that happen in the game that you can work on, but there are also moments that require intuition. Confidence is a factor. The Brentford game we were excellent for 60 minutes. The tempo was good against Southampton for 60 minutes. We mustn’t stop that. You’re never comfortable. We just have to keep promoting our work. If we are to get back to any sort of level, we need to reinforce that.”

Regret subs you've made?

“It’s different circumstances in a game. If you’re 2-0 down, you can make changes. If we don’t get results, it’s my responsibility. You do what you do when you have that feeling in the game. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I look at the games and where I can be better.”

Set-piece coach?

“There’s nothing to add at the moment."

Bertrand?

“No, there’s no timeline at the moment. He’s awaiting an operation.”

How Fofana get back into team?

“For me, it’s always about the commitment and when the players are ready to commit to the ethos of the team. If they’re not in the right frame of mind, we have to move on. The window will shut and then things will become clearer.”

How many players need to go out to get some in?

“We’re looking at a few players in order to bring some in. That’s been the model of the club, in terms of releasing funds.”

Blah blah blah…. Maddison twinge (oh ffs)… blah blah blah

Why oh why 3 at the back? We haven't got 3 decent centre halves so don't make do with incompetence, protect the defence with a more competent midfield where we have more players to choose from.

Wasn’t what I’d do but Rodgers has history of trying to match up systems

If he played a back 5 at home to Brentford he's definitely playing a back 5 vs Chelsea.

Ward

Castagne

Amartey

Evans

Vesty

Justin

Albrighton

Tielemans

Ndidi

KDH

Vardy

Play a low block and we're guaranteed a point by Rodgers' logic.

No link here in this squad to Vardy if Maddison is out. We'll only have the ball in our own third - we will get harried and give it away and you know the rest... He has to play Nacho (but will not because he doesn't trust him for some stupid reason). Only sub will be Daka for Vardy which makes zip all difference. Praet will be checking the plane times to Italy by the looks of it.

The battle of Fofana, if our lads capitulate here and the French lad doesn't play it could be absolutely humiliating.

If Rodgers can't get them up for this to Tey and save some self respect then for me that'll be the final straw

I don't suppose there's any chance one or two people might actually get behind the team for this one? We used to be good at that. Now were sh*t. It's getting embarrassing how negative our support has become.

Wonder why that is? 🤔

This club is a real problem state if Ryan Bertrand is ‘waiting for an operation’. What’s he on the NHS waiting list

Possibly the most bizarre statement in the whole presser and there were plenty -  ‘waiting for an operation’ wtf- mental - close to the answer to the set piece coach - ‘nothing to add’ - ha ha ha ha - absolutely pathetic- what is going on with our club

Could be what we are telling the insurance company to make sure his wages are paid in full

We tried that at for the Southampton match and I thought it started out very well. Of course the football was more of the same - how could it be anything else with Brendan still in charge? We still need to support the team though.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when all those people stood up and left during the second half 😢. I stood and clapped the lads off at the end - our team need our support. This has nothing to do with the manager.

Jesse Marsch explains how Leeds beat Chelsea:

"We said don't play backwards, don't play conservative, keep being on the front foot, keep playing, playing brave and they did that. It was really, really confident and strong performance."

No problem

I generally think the fan base is cut in half, and the Rodger’s out side are trying to bring the other half into their category.. I think it needs dividing into Rodger’s out and leaving the team separate. It was suggested that nobody should have been clapping after Stockport, and everyone that did is everything wrong with what’s happening (taken from the toxic world of Twitter).. like it’s been said before, it wasn’t the most glamorous of games, hard fought out win, scraped through on pens but bottom line is they went through.. So if Leicester got through to the final (just maybe) would the fan base be booing and screaming that it wasn’t deserved because they couldn’t beat Stockport? I doubt it..

We are all feeling it, some people attending every game and bloody fair play to them.. but you will get more out of the team with support than this booing malarkey. I am leaning more for a Rodger’s change, I think he needs to admit that he’s done all he’s can and hand over the reigns.. but did I clap at Stockport when they walked over, damn right I did..
