Bundesliga free agent would be ideal transfer to solve Leicester City's looming problem - Leicestershire Live

A move for Mahmoud Dahoud would be a sensible, cost-effective way for Leicester City to replace Youri Tielemans this summer.

City have been linked with the German international midfielder, who will leave Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer when the season ends. He has already been told by the Bundesliga side that his current deal will not be renewed.

The situation for City is different. They still hope that their soon-to-be-out-of-contract midfielder will commit to an extended stay, but they are having to prepare for the possibility that he will leave, the Belgian having so far resisted signing despite two years of talks.

Usually when City lose key players who are in the prime of their careers, they receive a big fee for which to replace them or further strengthen the squad. That won’t be the case if Tielemans leaves, and so if they are able to bring in a replacement without having to pay a transfer fee, it would be a huge boost for the club given the rest of the transfer business they hope to do in the summer.

Dahoud looks like an excellent fit for taking over from Tielemans. City would need a talented player to replace the Belgian, given all of the factors of the games he excels in, but progressing the ball through the midfield is the key asset he provides, and this is something Dahoud does well.

Since moving to Dortmund in 2017, he’s routinely ranked as one of the best progressive passers of the ball in the Bundesliga.

Not just that, he carries it forward well too, and is probably a better dribbler than Tielemans, while he does just as much defensive work. The only area where Tielemans is head and shoulders above Dahoud is in his final-third output.

The Belgian registers a goal or assist once every three-and-a-half games on average for City. In his six years at Dortmund, Dahoud has averaged a goal involvement once every six-and-a-half games.

If he's that good, why is it they don't want to renew his contract?

because they want to get some others in perhaps. Dortmund arent going to keep a player for the sake of it

tbf you could say the same thing bout many players tbh,

also i agree, he'd be a very decent replacement for YT too

Decision was made by both the player and the club

He isn’t quite good enough to start week in week out for Dortmund but wants more regular game time - which I think he would get with us

Other than 2021/22 he has been a squad player for Dortmund, but he has been up against some decent players during that time.

On a free he'd be a tempting signing and we do need some bargains if we are to recruit the number of new players we likely need in the summer.

I don't think he's as good as Tielemans though so we have to consider if we can eliminate the impact of that to our starting XI by ensuring we've strengthened other weak areas.

I think we need 2-3 new CM's anyway so Dahoud as one of them is fine by me.

Thanks. It's just that I know absolutely nothing about him and just wondered if he was problematic in some way.

Can we stop posting these Mockery editorials as if they're transfer stories. They really aren't.

We are apparently interested though

In the decisive talk on Thursday with Kehl, Dahoud was promised playing times by BVB so that he could put himself in the spotlight for top European clubs. According to SPORT1 information, AC Milan, SSC Naples, FC Sevilla and Leicester City have already expressed their interest in the still BVB star.

There's only 3 teams there that might be more desirable to join rather than a seemingly struggling Premiership side.

We can’t offer anything with potential relegation, Brighton are so so smart. For every player they’ve got they’ve got 2-3 targets, they may not do as well next season when they have to sell Caicedo and AM but they’ll be safe in the league. We could learn from them and in hindsight should’ve been the Leicester of old with the likes of Tielemans, madders and Ndidi and sold them when we could’ve.

They'll be fine whilst players are moving to other clubs. Their problems will come when clubs start to poach their backroom staff. They're much harder to continually replace.
