I wouldn't be too mad if we started using an academy player as a rb since I think ruud will use coopers 3241, at this point it wouldn't be worse than justin

Poor player who had a purple patch. He looks shot as well so needs to drop down a level, maybe two.

If we go down, hopefully we give a chance to Cover who is earning his chance to play at a higher level.

The thing is he’s one of the few players at the moment where I don’t question his effort & intensity, he’s just rubbish 😂

His effort and intensity going forward is unquestionable, his effort and intensity into actually defending is non-existent. It's exaggerated by being next to Faes, the bloke wants to be a winger, isn't good enough to be so plays full back.

I read that Newcastle want to sell Trippier in January. Wrong profile in terms of age, but he’d be a good short term option at right back (and he can take a free kick).

100000% we should be in for him.

No, we shouldn't.

He went on a god awful run of form, which pretty much killed Newcastles CL hopes as early as December, got them knocked out of the league cup, then he got injured and since then he's barely featured because he's been bettered.

This is just Bertrand mk II.  Except he won't be free and he's currently on 120k a week.

Newcastle got him in at the right time, squeezed what they could out of him and now he's in that precarious position as a 34 year old where you don't know if he'll ever be fully fit again, regardless of whether even at 100% he's still the required standard.  He's been out for 1/3 of this season with injury and he's been a benchwarmer.

He might be able to play out of position for Southgate in International football, but the Premier League is a different animal.  He'll got to Turkey or something and probably light it up for Mourinho.

Is wormleighton anywhere near the first team?

He was training with the first team yesterday so I think If he impresses Ruud he could be in with a chance.

Without putting a negative on it, I imagine he needed the numbers in training to be able to get a session on worthwhile for those who were on the bench or didn't play Saturday. Not saying that he can't impress in that scenario but normally just a numbers exercise.

Clearly he's in rotten form but tbh I can't see any other options. Choudhury as RB in a back 4 would be a disaster in the Premier League.

Maybe wing backs with McAteer or DeCordova-Reed as RWB? But both would probably be just as bad lol

Probably best to just stick with Justin and try to support him through this bad spell...

His game has to be simplified. He's been told to attack and provide the width on the RW, but when we lose the ball, he's expected to get back and defend. He can't do that much work. If he's going to play as a RW, he needs the MF to plug the hole he leaves, like Klopp did at Liverpool, when Trent and Robertson attacked. Otherwise tell him defending is the priority and play an actual winger that stays wide and doesn't drift infield.

His work-rate made up for his lack of composure and physicality tonight I thought. He was far less attacking than usual but West Ham's very organised press really got to the city back line, especially Justin. Not sure how the situation can be fixed in the short term? He needs far better cover in front of him otherwise we are going to continue leaking goals!

The change in personnel in front of him in the second half helped him immeasurably. It felt like it took the pressure off him a lot and resulted in West Ham attacking more down the left where I would argue VK is a better one on one defender than JJ

Absolute night and day when he got some support. Made a couple of fantastic blocks/interceptions too.

Still a million miles away from the player he could be, but hopefully that protection is there more often and no doubt things will improve for us.

possibly his best game of the season, and the first he hasn't had Faes inside him, coincidence, I'm thinking maybe not

Against Spurs he was absolutely brilliant, much better than last night.

But it's pretty clear that no Faes made a difference, and the shift in the second half so he had more protection and options with the ball

I was at the game yesterday. Justin has lost his confidence. Every time he got the ball he was worried about making a mistake. He gave the ball away a few times but also didn't have hardly any options in the first half. Think that was part of the reason Ruud switched Mcateer to the left. We definitely need another RB in January as he could do with taking out the firing line

I must of watched a different game. I thought he was one of our worst players personally 😂. Couldnt believe how bad he is defensively

Be interesting to see the heat map difference between Justin and Kristiansen. At the game last night it looked as though Kristiansen covered more grass and made it up the pitch more? Maybe wrong

Like most of the team he improved considerably after Van Nistelrooy’s tactical change at half time. He and McAteer were atrocious as a pair in the first half. I’d be surprised if that combination is ever repeated.

Let us fervently hope that he gains some confidence from the second half because his consistently abject performances this season (Arsenal apart) have been at the core of our defensive problems (which of course Cooper was incapable of fixing).

He will never alas be the top class full back he was before that serious injury but he surely has to improve under Van Nistelrooy…

Justin has always been better at left back for me, he's played his best games for us there and that was his position at Luton also

It was a long long time ago prior to injury that he looked good there.

In more recent times he's far worse there than on the right. Poor positional sense with a need to constantly cut inside which makes him very easy for the opposition to target at this level. If we had even a reasonable fit alternative his best position is on the bench sadly.

Absolutely agree regarding the first part. If the ball went anywhere near the right flank in the first half the move died. Sadly, not only are JJ and in particular Mcateer not good enough full stop, when both are on the same side of the pitch they are a liability.
